We have had three NY departures/arrivals but what do you think is the best place to observe sailaway on the Noordam in March? Why?

Outdoors on Lido Deck, aft. You get to see all the lights of the city as it grows smaller, can see both skylines of NYC and New Jersey, will see the Statue of Liberty, and it's still fairly sheltered from the wind.
You can step inside for a minute if it gets too cold, but can get right back outside for the best views when they come.
Or, sitting in the Penthouse hot tub is good, too. ;)

As Ruth has said, the Lido deck aft. We did that last year....then went inside and had dinner in the Lido! Very nice.
May do that again this February!
Or maybe, we'll watch the NYC departure from our Aft verandah, and order in from Room Service!

I'm sorry, but any balcony room whether you're lookind at New Jersey or New York is a great sail away. Maybe it's because I've been sailing out of NY for too long. But any sail away from NY is a great one.

In September, when the weather was spendid, we did the sailaway on an aft deck of the old Norwegian Crown. On winter cruises, always in March to celebrate my wife's birthday, we have always watched Manhattan glide by from our balcony stateroom. Awesome!

I agree that any sailaway from NYC is fabulous. It just depends if it makes a difference to you to look at it going forward(Crow's Nest) or backwards(Lido aft or an aft cabin).
As far as I'm concerned, I've done it going forward from the Crow's Nest which was great, and this time will probably do it from my aft cabin so I can have the comfort of moving inside and out. Of course, with early dinner seating, I might miss the statue , even if we leave on time. I guess they are lenient about that the first night since we had no trouble last year.
Sailaway from NY is spectacular, no matter where you watch from. My pictures of the statue at night didn't come out so great, but just seeing her is always a thrill. Now, with my new camera, who knows.:D

mamaofami -- The Crown's Nest. That's an idea. Since our cabin is near the bow, we probably will end up there after the fire drill. If we can't get one of those wonderful lazy-boys, we may consider some other location.

We just got off the Noordam yesterday, and we watched the sailaway from outside the Crows Nest. Keep in mind that they are holding the sailaway party in the Crows Nest lounge during the winter, so it was packed. Not sure if you're going to actually get to sit in one of those loungers until one of those first days at sea.
We LOVED the Noordam - so much so that about 3:00 yesterday my husband joked that if we hurried, we might be able to make the ship before it left out of NYC!

:) We are anxious for our Feb 6th cruise to get here. Both of us love the Noordam and this will be our 4th time sailing on her. But....the inaugural had to be THE best weather ever. 78 degrees in Jan in NYC, bright and sunny. They never had to close the dome at the lido pool and it was fantastic. The last two sailings we just used our veranda and popped our own bottle of bubbly. We love this ship so much that we made a donation to a charity to be able to sail again on 3/29 (private charter) to Bermuda. Sadly this will be her last trip out of NYC save the transatlantic sailing. Hopefully HAL will put at least one of their ships somewhere in the NE to accomodate their loyal following.

Our January 5, 2007 cruise out of New York we had amazing weather. We ate lunch outdoors in shirt sleeves the day we boarded. Incredible.
I do remember the weather was glorious the day of the Dedication/Maiden Voyage. Knowing how cold and awful it could have been, we got so lucky.

Carol,
What kind of camera do you have now? Mine is a Canon 550...not so great either. Maybe I need to investigate a new one. My photos from our last cruise at night were so dark.

We always take a winter cruise in March (to celebrate my wife's birthday). One year, on the Norwegian Dawn, they actually held the sailaway party outdoor.

I do remember the weather that day. It was fabulous! Just yesterday my BF and I were trying to remember if we ate outside or inside that day, and I was fairly sure it was outside (that day was a whirl and the details difficult to remember). Now I'm sure. I'm hoping for similar weather this year. But, I'll be happy so long as it doesn't snow and I have no problem getting to the dock!
I believe you and I met at the disembarkation talk, or some other gathering in the Vista Longue. We only spoke for a minute.

That weather we had in New York was unusual for January - the next day the maximum temperature was 72°F. Two days later we were down to the 30's.

Sheila, I'm embarrassed to say I do't remember what camera we got. I'm out in NJ with my kids and didn't take it with me. I think it ws an Nikon Alpha something. We used the camera boards on cruise critic to get help. Ny small camera had shutter lag and I couldn't get good shots of the kids because they would move before I could actually shoot the shot.
