Our first cruise was on the Carnival Elation, and in our packet it said to put locks on your luggage, so we did. I don't know if we are suppose to put locks on our luggage for The Oosterdam or not, does anyone know?

It's very wise to lock your luggage so no one can take anything out without you noticing - or put something in.

Since you live in SD and sail from there you don't have to worry about locking bags for a flight ... but I suggest you buy/use TSA approved locks anyway. That's probably about you can buy anymore, but I'm suggesting you don't use really old locks.

There's no problem with handing the porters locked bags at the dock - should the x-ray reveal anything they want a closer look at, you'll be paged to unlock the bags. But that rarely happens. And if locking the bags gives you greater peace of mind, then do it - no need to start a vacation with any extraneous stress! ;)

You don't need a lock to keep an honest person from pilfering your suitcase. No luggage lock will keep a thief out.
We use cable ties to asure the bag doesn't accidentally open but since the new rules with TSA, don't bother with locks anymore. Any one who wants to get into your bag, will. IMO

You don't need a lock to keep an honest person from pilfering your suitcase. No luggage lock will keep a thief out.Right - locks just keep out the casual "thief of opportunity" who wouldn't go so far as to actually "break into" a bag, but might open a zipper. Your cable ties essentially accomplish the same thing. I'm thinking more of the dock-hand workers here than HAL crew, BTW.

We always put locks on our luggage - I trust no one.

We've cruised since the mid-80's and have NEVER locked our luggage.....Well, that should be the "death-nil" for me.......:o
Anyway, we haven't.....but, then I don't put anything in my checked luggage that I could not easily replace.....
