View Full Version : Cabin Door Decorations Anyone?

We always like to decorate our cabin door and have done so on almost every cruise. This time I can not find any cutouts for Alaska and suggestions? We do this so we can find which cabin is ours after a few cosmos and don't stand at the wrong door trying to figure out why our key won't work. By the way we always bring along small magnets to put them up -but make sure they are away from the door key lock as your key would have to be re-coded if the magnets are too close.

With all due respect, and this is not a flame, but doesn't HAL put cabin numbers on the doors?

We do decorate the door for birthdays and anniversaries but have never thought to do it...."just because".
Sound like fun.

I know some people have talked about buying 'magnetic printer paper' from Staples or Office depot. I think it runs about $10 for 5 sheets & fits in most printers. Then people have said they have take photos, pictures or clipart from online, pasted it onto a word doc, then printed it out. Then cut around the pics to make magnets. It sounds like a great idea.
I have never done door decorations before or seen them, but after hearing the ideas decided to do one for our next cruise. I just used photos of us, so that way I can reuse it for future cruises:

If you click on the thumbnails you can see the pics larger. I will stick the lilac ribbon bows onto the paper when we get there as I don't want to get them squished. I'm going to hold it up with that 'fun tacky' stuff as that comes off easily.

What a great idea Sharon. I saw some large ones at Kinko's that you can have made but not the 8x10's.
We like to decorate the door and window. We've used window markers, florescent index cards cut into shapes, tropical wall decorations found at novelty stores etc.. I don't pack duct tape like so many.. but find tearable packing tape works wonders for just about everything and doesn't leave a mess for the cabin steward to clean up.
I think it's fun to decorate. We are cruising on Halloween.. I will have to come up with some spooky ideas.. :D

HAL certainly has cabin numbers at every door....they also have the numbers in braille. (sp?)
We have never thought of putting things on the doors or windows.
When we have cruised over the holidays, HAL has put small lovely wreaths on all of the cabin doors and they look so pretty....because they are all similar. A mismush of all sorts of things may look less attractive I would imagine.

Yes your cabin number is on the outside of your door, but believe me if your cabin is down one of those long hallways they all look a like - especially after a few cocktails- and if you don't have the eye glasses handy for get it. In all due respect we have received nothing but compliments of how we decorate our door and it is a fun thing to do. I will look for the magnetic sheets - great idea.

Now how cool would that be? Going on a halloween cruise and on Halloween night going door to door to every cabin with a trick or treat bag *LOL* :)

However, in case there are some kids trick-or-treating, I'll probably bring some candy with me.:)

That is very nice of you to bring candy for the kids :)
Of course you could always do what my Dad and my friends dad used to do .
this was years ago when everyone on our street knew everyone else and were all very friendly.
When we were little , our dads would walk with us trick or treating and when we would go up to a house , the dads would hold out a shot glass and say trick or treat. *LOL*
There was this one year .......*LOL*

:( Trick or Treat on board ship!!!!!!Now I've heard it all.
We've noticed this door decorating trend and find it most unappealing, except for some special occasion.

I'm sure if there are children onboard over Halloween the ship will take care of the festivities. I'm sure no one really wants kids to have any excuse to be running up and down hallways banging on doors, trick or treat or no trick or treat.

Nothing like cookie-cutter decorations.
Now I don't hold with flashing lights on the door, but anything which breaks up the monotony of a ship's corridor is fine with me. WE did some hollowen decorastions on the Volendam last October which were (I believe) appreciated by our near neighbors as the all commented favorably on them.

Would be annoying I suspect.

I would not be happy if someone wanted to put up a picture of dogs playing poker or a velvet Elvis in the dining room. But I hardly think that door decorations is going to ruin the bland monotony of a hallway with doors.;)

I don't know I love Halloween, I am big kid anyway. I love handing out candy on halloween. The little guys are so cute in their costumes :)

The people three doors down from us hung a balloon on their door, and I was very appreciative of their decorations, because it always helped me find our room! Those hallways are SOOO long, especially when you are exhausted!

I'm putting a moose head on my cabin door, as soon as I get to the Prinsendam. After all, I'll have saved so much room in my suitcase by not packing those "ridiculous" formal gowns.

Yeah, I hate people smoking, people wearing bikinis that are obviously more suited to a one-piece, children running around.... but we're on vacation & so is everyone else. We have a right to enjoy ourselves as we please (as long as we are not hurting others) as do they. ;)

That's fine with me, as long as you have some candy for us trick-or-treaters (like I won't have enough to eat on the cruise:D ).Oh absolutely. And not just for "kids" as everyone is a "kid" when it comes to trick-r-treat (how many will confess robbing their kids bags when they were young?) . Sad thing is that it will be formal night so costumes are out (sniff sniff). However there is always the day at sea :) . Passing out candy is the BEST part. I think trick-r-treat doing the door-knocking thing would be cute if the cruiseline sponsored it. - however.. I don't think it's something appropriate as each cruiser should deserve the privacy they desire.
I'm going to miss trick-r-treat at home. I live in a wooded subdivision next to a county park. We have no street lights and the houses are spread apart (acre lots) that they kids have to "hike" through the leaves. You know they're coming from the crunch crunch sound. I dress up as part of the fun. This year the "other twin" who's not sailing with me will have to take this role.
CriuiseOften - Every cruise is a special occasion :D

Maybe the people that want to hand out candy , could have a big pumpkin on their cabin door so the kids know which doors to knock on. *LOL*

We've cruised several times on Halloween and there was little to nothing made of it.
Not many folks had much interest in donning costumes but I believe they did have a costume party in Crowsnest offered.....not many came.
We were sitting at the bar and felt bad for the few that came looking for a large party.

one of my girlfriends made a beautiful door magnet....ceramic tile with hand chisled edges, a stamp of a HAL type ship in black and our name. Brought it along stuck it on the door....it promptly slid down to the floor. heavy magnet, plastic wood grain on the door=gravity takes over.
ps..I did not see even one "personalization" on any door

As one who spent any number of holidays aboard Uncle Sam's Big Grey Boats (one heckuva line!) door decorating is a fine art. I did send people Trick-or-treating to other ships on Halloween once, but trying to TP a 17-thousand ton warship is a tough job. We will be cruising over Thanksgiving and will "gobble-up" our door.
Cheers

MarkB.......I imagine whatever 'doors' Uncle Sam provided on the big grey boats could probably use a bit of decorating. :)
We were on Maasdam last Thanksgiving and had a fabulous time. Hope you enjoy your cruise this Thanksgiving as much.

OK, I have to ask about the door. Is the door all metal or just parts? Just curious since almost everyone mentions their decoration being a magnet in some way.
It's been 11 years and I've no clue at this point as to whether there were any doors decorated. We fly out in 9 days, so I still have time to be creative for our HAL sailing.

Bookworm, thank you for the chuckle. I haven't had one like that in a long time!
Seriously, we don't decorate our cabin door, but I will occasionally admire the creativity of other passengers when it comes to personalizing their doors. I like the simple ones the best -- those that look like a page out of a Creative Memories book. I also saw one that looked like a wrapped gift, that was very nice. Not over-the-top, just simple and elegant.

This belongs in the "blender" thread, but I think I need to bring the cordless drill/driver for hanging those overweight door decorations. A moose head hanging in the dining room would also add a bit of ambience.:D

I was wondering about the Big Grey Boats. Are the midship cabins near the gun turrets very noisy? *LOL*
I think a big moose head it the hallway would be great. you catch a rug rat running in the hallway and you hook him up on one of the antlers *LOL*

Exactly what I was thinking. And it will probably keep those horrid annoying scooters from slowly lumbering past all the time because they won't fit. ;)

Sail7Seas:
You are exceedingly welcome. The stateroom doors definitely needed a little..."je ne sais quois". Those of us who lived aboard tried to accomodate our accommodations by adding a little festive decoration of the season. Thank you for sharing your Maasdam.
Vicar:
Two of the "Big Grey Boats" had their own airport. One cabin under the catapaults, one under the arresting gear (landing area). I no longer complain about "airport noise". lol

The new magnetic sheets (got ours at wal-mart) work great that fit right into your computer like paper. We have had fun finding cliparts, and cuting out the magnets for our door and our upcoming alaska cruise. We are also using these sheets to download pictures of my grandkids for frig magnets. Thanks again to the person who posted this idea = Great
