OK...
The only thing that i would recommend taking is a power board if you have multiple Ipods, video camera's etc that you might like to charge as there was only 1 power point on the Sun.

Ummm ear plugs if you share with someone who snores??

AQUA SHOES ARE A MUST especially on the islands where the sand is coral _ everyone's feet were hurting trying to walk into the water. I wore those shoes every where and always recommend them to friends who are first time cruisers.

Very good suggestion, especially if your cruise is going to Emerald Bay/Divine Island - where the beach is a dead coral beach. You only make the mistake of trying to walk on the beach there with no shoes on once.

Hi Maxx,

I gave the below packing list we put together to a "virgin" cruiser friend and think it is quite helpful.

Cheers,
Chaz:)

Things to pack…
q Tickets & passports!!
q Small torch
q Non electric alarm clock (try to avoid ones that tick!!!)
q Febreeze (fabric spray), if travelling on Star take Fabulon Iron Free too
q Any medications required (note: as per all other travel advice always carry on prescription medication; also suggest Panadol, motion sickness tablets, bandaids, etc)
q Small sewing kit
q Lanyards (save $7 each)
q Room freshener
q Water bottles (can buy water for $2 per 600ml bottle or $3.50 per 1.5 litre, but free water is available on both Star & Sun 24/7 to fill your own bottles)
q Backpack (useful for island stops and shopping!) or overnight bag (suitcases must go out the night before arrival into Brisbane, need something to carry those last minute items)
q Comfy shoes to wear on board
q Camera, films and spare battery if you haven’t changed it for a while (underwater cameras are good if you plan to snorkel and often can be picked up cheaply before you go, these were sold on a good special on board so may want to wait if you aren't sure you want one or not)
q Swimmers, sunscreen & shady hat
Nice to haves…
q Reef shoes (about $10 from Big W)
q Cheap accessories for Island night (flowers for hair, leis, etc). Can buy on board and at the island but often is cheaper to pick up at Crazy Clarks or you might already have!!
q Small handbag to carry everything around during the day. I bought a crocheted one from Crazy Clarks for about $3 which I take every cruise.
q Wet ones - good to use on the islands
If you already have don’t forget…
q Binoculars
You probably won’t need…
q Board games etc - the library usually has a large range of games for use including Monopoly, Scrabble, Jenga, playing cards (including Cribbage boards & 500 decks).
q Soap
q Towels - small beach towels supplied and changed when needed
Luggage tips…
q When attaching the labels supplied by P&O ensure you peel off both sides and stick together.
q Make sure every bag has an additional name tag attached in case the one supplied by P&O falls off. Your bag should then find it’s way to your cabin and you won’t have to look for it.

Hi Pixie,

You will be surprised how quickly your time will come!! Especially as your excitement builds. The thing I love about this site is it is somewhere to come and "chat" with people who are fanatical about cruising and it helps your excitement build rather than talking to other people who just make the usual "jealous" comments and find it hard to get excited with you. You will see people come and go from their cruise and before you know it your time comes.

We are looking at booking the Easter 2007 cruise. It seems so long away but really isn't that long to go!! Just think there are people out there that don't have any cruises planned and they have even longer to go or worse still are missing out altogether!!

Cheers,
Chaz:)

I tie colourful material on the handles of our bags as when they unload them after getting back from your trip, a LOT of people have the same bags as you. I even put them on my carry on luggage and handbags as when they go through the x-ray machines they are easy to spot. Sometimes they come out the other end with other peoples

The excitement is deffientely building with great speed!:D I love reading other people's posts as they are preparing for their trips. it almost seems like you are going as well...almost. very exciting. I know my time will fly very quickly...i can't believe that from when i first discovered this site not long ago there has already been a few people that have gone and come back already!!!! Can't believe Jan is almost over.
We have a land based holiday planned in March this year and some how that pales in comparison to the cruise one next year.

Will you be going on the star or the sun for the easter one?

Will you be going on the star or the sun for the easter one?

We will be going on the Star. The most exciting thing (after the fact that it is someone's 50th on Easter Sunday which is why we are all going) is that we are going to Pentecost Island for the first time. At this stage there is about 32 of us going on this cruise so this is definitely the biggest group we have been with. We hope to have 4 generations on board!!

As well as (or instead of) wipes, there is also a "waterless hand cleaner" you can buy. I got mine from Priceline, not sure where else you can buy it but it's just a small tube of clear liquid/gel sort of stuff. Say for instance, your hands are sticky, you put a little on your hands & rub them together as if washing them. They end up clean & dry - no water, soap or towel.
Also, I read on another forum that it's a good idea to take a sheet to the islands for sitting on. Doesn't take up much room, gives you more room than a towel for sitting, sand shakes off much easier than a towel & it saves your towel just for drying yourself (without the sand sruck to it). Never trued it but it certainly sounds feesable and I'm going to try it.

Hi
The waterless 'Stuff" is called aquium( I think that is how you spell it). It is also an antibacterial sop which means handy to have at all times in the handbag for even the shopping centre toilets.

The hand gel is called Aqium, it's great, never thought to take it!
I plan to take a personal chamois (the kind the swimmers use)
As for reef shoes....we just bought a pair of shoes which you can use in the waterr and for walking, jogging, etc. The back also fold down to make them slip ons. Hard to explain but very versatile and I hate to say Very expensive but 3 shoes in 1.
We were told to take our own snorkel gear cheaper than hiring.

We took our own snorkel gear on both family cruises - (we had 4 sets). Was bulky in the cases but save $$$$ on deposits etc (even though you get reimbursed), was just once less que you had to line up for.

The duct tape afficinados will tell you it is critical - you can patch up anything with it from rips in the suitcases to beach toys. Personally, I've never taken or needed it, but do have a few oddball things I DO find necessary - a "pop-up" laundry basket comes in handy as a hamper and as transport to the laundry room and back, and in a pinch, can double as a beach carryall and/or shopping "bag." Don't know if they have 'em down under, but here in the States, you get them at the discount dept. stores. They're like those windshield thingees but with net sides and handles. When not in use, you bend them back into a flat circle. Also don't go anywhere without a small first aid kit with bandaids, ace bandage, first aid cream, and on cruises take both ginger tabs and for rougher weather, dramamine. Also like to take a highlighter marker for the daily schedule and sticky notes in case I need to leave a note for DH or the cabin steward.

Reef shoes are a must in Lifou too. We all had ones from Big W and Quite a few pairs fell apart. It must have been a faulty batch in Canberra as I bought a new pair for daughter in QLD and had no probs. I have had my Big W ones for 4 years with no probs.

The underwater cameras are great but be careful if you buy them on the ship. If you get them from the kiosk it is $25 and doesn't include free processing. Only from the photo shop and if they offer it at the tender embarkation. The one I bought from the kiosk also wasn't reusable. I bought one from the photo shop on the Sun and it included processing worth $6.95 and it also had a flash. very cool.

Post it notes are handy for the keeping track for friends in other cabins. They also may appear on a scavenger hunt. I love my travel stretchy closthesline and one of those $2 shop round mini peg hanging thingy.

As someone else said water bottle. If you have one with a wide neck it is handy for fill with ice and then water. I did that every day and carried it with me.

I bought one of these specially for the cruise (not sure if it has handles though) cost me $5-00. Might even by another one yet. Don't even know what I'm going touse it for but thought it would come in handy for something. Dirty washing, shoes - who knows?

One thing I will probably bring is cordial to mix with water from the ship. Wouldbe much cheaper than buying soft drinks, we could easily rack up $30 a day in soft drinks alone otherwise. And water bottle to take on the beaches at the ports, unless the ship provides that.

kaseyoz
February 26th, 2006, 04:10 PM
yes the ship did provide clean cold water at the pier on the island stops. Plus drink were sold via cruisecard. They are not too expensive and they serve you.

karen instaed of taking a pop up hamper take one of those blue/red striped bags from the $2 shop. hang it near the front door (there are hooks) or in the bathroom. put all your dirty washing in it and then just zip it up and take it home like that straight to the laundry. Not so good if you are flying though

You can also use them for beach bags as we seemed to take a lot with us to the beach, snorkels, towels, camera video etc

Hat clips. It can be very windy when tendering or just being on deck. Never lose your hat over the side again. These are two alligator clips with a small length of cord between them that clip your hat to your shirt.

Travel Thermos Cups. We took two of these. We are early risers and we filled them up with coffee, grabbed a croissant or danish (or both) :) and headed up on deck to watch the sun come up and enjoy the early morning. Our coffee stayed hot and didn't spill. They were great. Buy short, stocky ones. Why? Because ours were a bit too tall when we filled them at the coffee machine.

I know I am starting to pack all sorts of crap but... the removable wall hooks were great. Originally 3m brand. I bought some from the reject shop for $2 for 8 and they were great for hanging up the toothbrushes. If you pack the heavy duty ones you could hang tolietries bags etc off them.

Other thing I reckon is a must if you have room is some sort of li-low (sp?) for snorkelling. We took a pool hammack (what a hassle) but it was the best thing ever. Two people could lay across it and float above the coral. In lifou I went over coral I never could have swum over becuase it was about 5 inches below the water level.

Lucky the beauty for most of us is cruising is a one stop holiday- jump on and off a plane ond onto a ship or in my case straight from home to ship. We can take heaps and not have to be bothered with packing and unpacking before we even get onboard. Just throw it all in.

Great idea. We use the pool noodles (?) when snorkling on the reef here, but although light-weight, they would take up a lot of luggage space. I would think anything inflatable (even a child's swim ring...no, not in one, on one;) ) would work well.

I am thinking of something sort of cylindrical that you plug in, and used mainly by the ladies...........yes that's right hair wands. My wife would hate to go somewhere without hers.

What? what did you think I meant? Honestly the minds of some people, lol.

Also I swear by a bum bag and a aqua wallet. the aqua wallet is ideal for keeping some money with you and your key card when ashore and having a dip. It beats leaving it on the beach or having to take turns swimming.

The Aqua shoes are great we used them in the Mediterranean as their beaches are not often/always sand.

We took with us those fold up bed things for floating across the coral at Lifou with. People on the ship were pulling faces at us with them but once we got to Lifou they were excellent. We laid on ours and just floated across the coral. Some of the coral comes up quite high so it was much easier floating across it on the bed. After we just let the air out and folded them back up - not too heavy to carry either. Make sure you take your reef shoes!

Hi All,

Thought you may be interested in our updated Packing Tips & Tricks. We will be including this in our Cruise Survival Kits.

Packing Tips & Tricks

Before Packing:

Make a list of what you need to take & check it off.
If you are travelling with someone co-ordinate your packing. Sharing common items such as an alarm clock or first aid kit, even shampoo & conditioner, toothpaste & other bathroom supplies will save you from each having to pack the same items.Packing Tips:

Carry all documents, medicines, essentials and valuables with you in your carry-on. Consider slipping in a change of clothes if you want to change for dinner in case your bags don't arrive quickly enough.
Place anything that could ruin clothes, such as shampoo, sunscreen & toothpaste into a sealed plastic bag (zip locks are grate for this!).
Roll your clothes to best utilise the space in your suitcase (this will also reduce creasing). Or get a vacuum pack to save space (remember these will reduce the volume of your clothes not the weight!).
Pack socks inside your shoes to help them keep their shape & save space.
There is no laundry on the Star. This also means there are no irons. Either iron before you go, take no iron clothes, get some Iron Free spray from the supermarket or just wear unironed clothes!!
Again no laundry! - try to pack clothing that is reusable, i.e. can be worn more than once. Just remember the Febreeze to freshen it up!!Luggage tips:

When attaching the labels supplied by P&O ensure you peel off both sides and stick together.
Make sure every bag has an additional name tag attached in case the one supplied by P&O falls off. Your bag should then find it's way to your cabin and you won't have to look for it.
Make sure you have room to bring home your souvenirs. You may want to pack an additional bag (or two!).
Tie some bright coloured ribbon onto your bags or use a luggage strap that will help you to identify your bags (especially if they are black and look just like everyone else's).

Ive just had my suitcase out on the bed.......looking at clothes i've progressively been buying over the past few months.....me thinks i have too much!! Trying to cull as we speak....'oh but i might wear that'...'hmmm will i need that?.... all my answers seem to be YES just in case!!..In case of what i'm asking myself. So what if i wear things three times!! (or more). And they do have a laundry service. It looks as though i'm purposely trying to fill the suitcase to its absolute capacity. One of my VERY bad habits...even if i'm only going away for a weekend...I always pack TOO MUCH!!! HELP!!! Any ideas to help convince me I don't need it all???

If you own a laptop computer and are taking a digital camera, take both. We downloaded our photos in the cabin each night, burnt to CD and erased the memory card. Came home with hundreds of pictures after 10 days.

Yep, this is a great idea. Very efficient. We came home with 2500 photos between both cameras and I'm glad we copied them to the laptop because I couldnt get the idea out of my head that we were going to lose our cameras and memory cards and have our pics lost forever!

My little tidbit of advice is don't overpack. I did. Everyone says that, but I seriously learnt the hard way. I took everything from insect repellent to a first aid kit to binoculars to the Febreeze to the different tops for different weather... blah!

In the end, I only circulated between a pairs of pants, a skirt and shorts and a few tops and one formal outfit [washing them frequently]. I wore beaded sandal/slides during the day and heels at night. I didnt need the 872,934,32 pieces of clothing I brought along. I have learnt this now.

I didnt use the insect repellent, I had no need to. I forgot about the binoculars and the Febreeze was a waste of suitcase space. It's useless in my opinion. I even took a sewing kit, just in case. The funniest part was, I actually did get a whole in the seam of my shorts :o and even though I had a sewing kit, I DIDN'T BOTHER because I was too busy having fun and couldnt be bothered sitting in my cabin sewing! :D

So whilst all these suggestions are great for first-time cruisers, I think that you will find you learn your own lessons, regardless, just like I did...

Next time, I'm packing a minimal amount of clothing, camera, laptop, passport. 2 pairs of shoes [casual and heels], make-up, deodorant, 1 formal outfit, shampoo and THAT's IT! Anything else I think I MIGHT need, I don't.

Take two packs of seasickness tabs - we used our first pack early on and had to buy some at the cruise shop, they were reasonably priced, but it would have been easier to have them with us rather than risk throwing up while en route to the shop. Lol. :o Great ideas everyone!

Another tip, sorry if it's already been mentioned, is...

Tie a bright ribbon or something that distinguishes your suitcase from the other million black suitcases at the airport.

Hi Guys! This is my first post! I can't believe I never knew about this site before!

My tip for packing must haves would HAVE to be Immodium incase you get a dodgy tummy and a laxitive incase you get blocked! I've found the laxies to be invaluable on my past 2 cruises!! I think it's all the rich food they feed you :D I just wish i'd thought of it for the first cruise! This is TMI but after 4 days I ended up sitting down with a whole bag of sugar free lollies and eating the lot. Thank goodness sugar free lollies have a laxitive effect LOL!

Looking forward to chatting with everyone about their cruises :D

On that subject, I always pack a couple of the purse size packs of tissues for trips to the loo on the smaller islands. Most of them don't have toilet paper, or if they do it runs out early on in the day. Some of the locals even charged us 50c for paper in Vila on our first cruise! They're small enough that they don't take up too much room in your bag and very handy ;)

I read somewhere on here that a waterproof 'wallet' type thing to carry your cruise card, credit card & money etc. for when you go on shore is a good idea - what a fantastic idea! Would not have even thought of it had it not been for this site - that way everyone can enjoy swimming together and nobody has to worry about stuff being stolen from the beach!! Apparently you can get them from sports and travel stores.... happy travelling everybody!

See http://www.leisurepro.com/Prod/DPK44.html for the flat style waterproof pouch (AKA DryPak). This would probably be the style you should look for down under at a reasonable price.

Hey look at me, I didn't even GO and I have advice lol.

Shampoo & conditioner, I thought they would be supplied but they weren't

Infant Advice
Small Toys including Deflated beach ball, Matchbox cars, stacking cups
Kettle for boiling water for bottles, also good for heating them up
Harness - my 1 yo could easily crawl overboard (on the Star anyway)
Pool nappies, Suncream, Hat, Rash vest
Formula, nappies, wipes, bottles, bottle brush, dishwashing liquid

All medication you currently have at home, you might feel like you are taking a portable chemist but very expensive and possible almost impossible to buy onboard (Nurofen, Bonjela, Panadol, Rash cream, Infacol etc etc)

OK something I took on my cruise was a $6.00 blow up lilo from Woolworths. For me it was so relaxing being gently rocked by the waves in the crystal clear waters of the islands.

If you can fit a small foot pump in your luggage it will make the blowing up of the lilo easier. One other thing I did put it a very thin length of rope to anchor myself to the shore or the rocks on the bottom to save myself from floating away.

Now, it may sound like too much trouble, but for someone like me who really really likes the relaxation of being gently rocked to sleep in the water it was truly worth it.

My lilo was even better, in that it had a clear "pillow" at the top so you could see through it. Bit like your own glass bottom boat....well, not really but good enough for non snorkellers.

I dont think my time was very relaxing on the lilo at emerald bay as i think i had about 10 kids who's job it was to try and capsize my boat. then it was to see how many people could fit on it.

All good fun!!!excpet as you say robert, blowing it up, defintely taking the foot pump next time.

Apologies if this has been covered before but a clarification on DUCK and DUCT tape.

DUCT tape is a strong tape used a lot in industry. Commonly grey in colour
DUCK tape is a brand name for the tape (I think) we are discussing here. This style of tape can easily have strips ripped off using your hands (No need for scissors). but is excellent for repairs to various travel goods, including broken suitcases.

It can be purchased as a generic brand at major hardware stores and in a variety of bright colours. The big green-coloured hardware chain starting with a 'B" sells a generic version at a reasonable price.

We also use this tape externally on our suitcases as a means of identification when collecting luggage at airports and cruise disembarkation.

I continue to use duck tape as a definition, as it predates duct tape. It was invented by Johnson & Johnson for sealing ammo cases during WW2. Duck tape was found to be useful for sealing ducting pipes together, and it evolved to be called that more commonly, as duck tape is a trademarked name.

Great idea Geoff. Guess you can create an individual design then. Just as an add-on to the packing list, I think those of us flying (domestically) to the embarkation port have the easiest packing deal. With a 20kg free limit on the suitcase, culling is a lot easier.

DUCK tape .v. DUCT Tape

Yep, the names can confuse. I originally raised this point to alert people to the difference between the industrial version which is around 75mm or 100mm wide and a rather bulky item to the one you see in supermarkets and handyman stores.

Whatever you want it call it, my advise is to stick to the version that comes in a variety of colours and is available on much smaller rolls at supermarkets and general hardware stores.

Sorry - Double post. - but might like to add while Im editing that there are some excellent suggestions and a very detailed packing list in the sticky thread on the main p&o aus page for anyone who's interested.

And another absolute must after going through this list (which most is on the unstuck sticky packing list thread) is helium filled suitcases.

I admit, we overpacked on our recent cruise. There were several things on this list we did not take, and several we did that were not used. My suggestion is to use the list as a prompter when you are organising your cases.
Examples:
If you are taking a laptop, a portable DVD\CD player is a waste of time. You need a use for the laptop to lug it all that way (upload media cards to hard drive, publish notes\pics to website etc). If you are just going to browse email and favourite sites a couple of times on your trip, use the onboard computers or an internet cafe in port. Kids have access to game consoles in kids clubs.
If you are taking your phone (which will work till you depart) it can also double as an alarm clock, gameboy, mp3 player, calculator.
Games, puzzles, library free onboard - no need to load up. If you are halfway through a good paperback, it would make sense to take along.
Small cash for tipping? I guess this is an American list.
Pegs (clothpins) We thought it was a must, till we found that a load in the dryer was $1 and we could shower without dodging swimmers on the line. Pegs did not come out of their plastic bag.

List is missing some of the sticky essentials:
Picnic chairs
Crock pot
Kettle
Electric toothbrush

And we packed all our information into a cheap clear display book, which was great for keeping it all together. Also kept the patters and menus neat and flat for bringing back

Another thing we didn't need.

We bought 2 bingo dobbers for the cruise. They might be still useful for P&O, but Sun Princess has punch through cards, so our dobbers are still brand new.

If you are taking your phone (which will work till you depart) it can also double as an alarm clock,

One thing to remember though is that it also works when you return.:( Sailing into Sydney it picks up a signal at about 2-30 am  and then all your messages start to arrive at about 1 minute intervals:mad: . I learnt that through experience.

WoW - that is scary!
Wary of that (and accidental roaming charges), I pulled the sim card when we left for dinner on the first evening and stored it with my camera media till we got home. Will still function as an alarm clock\calculator\mp3 etc without the sim card.

I too have learnt about the "dreaded return to signal" in wee hours of the morning. On my phone you can set an alarm and still switch it off. The alarm will still go off at designated time.

I think most phones (if not all) will still have the alarm go off if switched off. My phone is pretty old & basic and the alarm will still work when switched off. I left mine on though, just had it on silent. That was so I could check the time if I woke up during the night.
At about 3am coming into Sydney the vibration woke me up. It was a message from a friend asking if I'd enjoyed the cruise. He'd sent it about 5 days earlier:rolleyes: .

I was just looking at a thread titled 'Hairdryers on the Pacific Dawn'. There's no hair dryer needed up on deck. :p

Then I smiled to myself remembering the wind blown hairdo I sported continuously from the time we sailed out through the heads in Sydney to the day we returned.

As well as being wind blown, there was the swimming and snorkelling and returning to the ship with salt encrusted wind blown hair.

My big thing to pack is Top Quality Hair Conditioner. Don't leave home without it.

wow I finally got through this and have two peices of paper with notes from this and the newbies. Thanks

Ok an important question...we sail off at 4pm, how long will we have reception for on our mobiles after sailing off? My girlfriend has just found out she is having a caesar the day I leave  so I'm hoping I'll have reception till at least 6pm which i think would be the latest time an elective caesar will be planned

Great Idea thanks guys, have printed some of them off to make up my own list.

Just wanted to add that instead of the lanyard (can't stand anything around neck when hot sticky and sandy ) a fuel card holder that way your cruisecard was not "injured" when they punched a hole in it to attach to the Lanyard. As for the door key we simply took an old keyring Ring and attached to the many holes in the fuel card.Cliped on clothes with those convention badge clips made not taking a bag to dinner during formal nights easy.

Also found that the Soap they give you in the cabin is Horrid :eek: so will def be taking liquid soap and body wash (more hygenic too)

And couldn't agree more with the travel clocks that don't tick nothing more maddening than that in the middle of the night

Glen20 is a fab idea too - so many to mention

We took duct tape to keep draws and cupboards closed as they can keep u awake from opening and closing through out rough seas. My daughter also used it to cover a glowing light next to the light switch on the wall beside her bed as it was keeping her awake [this was on the dawn princess but you never know]

Reef shoes are a MUST.
A power pack for items such as straighteners and chargers, there is a blow dryer provided but it was not very affective. Charger for your mobile is a good idea even if you do not have international roaming, you can use it as an alarm to save space on packing. HOWEVER... on the last night when returning home set your mobile to silent as we learnt incoming text msgs are a pain to hear at 3 am when service returns.

And last of all, I did not see the point in my opinion to take sewing kits and so on as your steward can pretty much supply items as such. One even fixed up a friend of ours shoe that had broken free of charge.

on my last trip (pacific sun) we needed a sewing kit and NO ONE had one...we needed a needle and cotton to hem up some pants... we finally found a needle with the woman at the perfume counter who kindly went and got it from her personal supply..another friend needed to sew on a button on his shirt... and again couldnt find a needle and cotton..its always the things you never use that you need...(Ive never touched a needle or cotton since)

I have seen a lot of mention of duct tape (and then people saying how they took it and never used it - of course its something you will only use IF there is a problem and lets face it, we never know when there is gonna be a problem. When you've got it though AND need it, its irreplaceable however).

However, instead of duct tape, I take a roll of sticky sports strapping tape. We have used this for 1)strapping an injured rolled ankle (its VERY supportive) 2) strapping together a deep cut on the bottom of a foot which was injured on coral (after flushing it out thoroughly of course and treated with antibacterial stuff), 3) taping up broken luggage 4) holding anything else together or in place - we used it one time to strap together a sandel that had come apart and there would have been no other way to keep the sandel operational for the duration of the holiday. its GREAT stuff and so versatile :)

I would imagine it would also be great for holding balcony doors/drawers & cupboards in place when ship is in rough weather.

If I leave it behind, you can guarantee that is the one time i WILL need it:o

I am still convinced the best packing list is one made on the fly 8pm the night before you leave :P

Small rope/clothesline & pins. There is one in shower, but must remove clothes to shower. I tie my stuff on balcony chairs to dry. If going to a tropical place, take bug repellant (best is the individual towelettes); transderm patches (if you have tendency for motion sickness); walkie talkies - to communicate w/ others...cell phones either don't work or are expensive. Blow dryer, ones on most ships are very weak. Small folding hamper, if free laundry (platinum). Small baggy of soap in case you must wash something before returning, plus tide pen or shout wipes to pre-treat stains. Hair Conditioner (only have shampoo on mosts ships); $1 stapler or tape (if you put cruise tags on luggage before flying to port, they sometimes fall off - so we either tape or staple them on when we get to port). If going with a group, I make signs for each cabin door so it is easier to find other's rooms. A few bandages, SPF lip balm, cough drops or cold pills, & a small assortment of meds. Small collapsible soft-sided cooler to put drinks in. Electrical power strip. Memory cards, sunscreen, ear plugs, plastic bags (for taking wet clothing home). Cheap ponchos.
Always take a change of clothes, meds, jewelry & any valuables in your carry-on. Also, have ALL cruise documents with you, as well as important other documents. Try to stick to a couple of colors that can be mixed or matched.

When packing your snorkle gear, I suggest you leave the flippers at home. They take up a lot of room and really aren't necessary. My wife and I take our gear and wear our beach/water shoes and find them to be quite adequate for the type of gentle snorkling we do.

Thank you to those who did up the packing list. You had some things on there that I would not have thought of taking with me. Like the Power Strip for charging batteries for camera/video recorder and MP3 player. I always pack my aqua shoes with me when I go on cruises. I never know when I will be at a beach or to even wear them up to the pool on the ship.

One of the items that I learned to take with me after my first cruise is a travel mug for my morning coffee. I had more coffee spilled on me or my tray on my first cruise than I would have liked from the rocking or people not paying attention to what they were doing. So I started bringing a travel mug with me. I have had so many people stop and ask me where I got my mug, I told them that I brought it with me and use it because I got tired of wearing the coffee. I would see some of them later on with travel mugs that they bought as souviners and using them. They all would tell me thank you because they would never would have thought of that. Plus you get more coffee in a travel mug than you do in one from the ship. The staff is nice enough that they will fill it for you with a carafe (because they don't fit under the machine).

I also take blank note cards with envelopes to write out thank you's to the staff when you give them their tips along with Hershey Kiss's that I bring with me straight from Hershey's Chocolate World in Hershey, PA. They always are excited to recieve this type of thank you because it is something that makes them feel special.

I am getting ready to head to Hawaii in August for the first time. Can't wait to go since I will be celebrating a milestone birthday a little late but it is worth it.

I would not bring a huge roll but it does come in handy! We went to Italy a few years ago and the rough cobblestone streets broke a new suitcase-duct tape to the rescue! It holds practically anything together.

If you are going to have an inside cabin, take a couple of light sticks, the plastic kind that glow when you bend them. If you hang them on the bathroom door handle, it will be a guide to help find the bathroom without disturbing everyone else. You haven't seen dark until you are in a inside cabin at night!

We take a kids night light to plug in to the power socket, or if not that then leave the bathroom light on, it's amazing how much light comes through a slightly open door or even a closed one!!

One thing to remember though is that it also works when you return.:( Sailing into Sydney it picks up a signal at about 2-30 am  and then all your messages start to arrive at about 1 minute intervals:mad: . I learnt that through experience.
<spurts hot chocolate all over the screen>

Hadn't thought of that - all our previous travel's been by plane ... I can just see it in my mind's eye :-)

<still chortling at the thought...>

Great list...not sure what you would do with the lanyard or torch...welding? soldering? TSA even takes lighters away. The hand gel is Purel or similar; everyplace including Dollar Tree has bottles of various sizes...it's the stuff that Holland American has Everywhere!
I add a mesh hamper (folds flat about 1' square, but pops out to abour 2 1/2" tall by 1 foot square)...since it's mesh, it can be put in the corner of the cabin and laundry that's well aired doesn't smell like it would in the closet. On another thread someone suggested a hanging shoe bag for the bathroom door...I'm packing it for our 30 day HAL cruise to Hawaii and the Marguesas...I'm even making labels for some of the stuff I know will go in it that I want handy but not man-handled by the crew or out on the sink.

The torch--I have no clue, LOL...but the lanyard is good if you want to carry your room key/Seapass card around w/you...

Maybe consider taking a bandaids, bandage, betadine and things like that for quick but not fatal emergencies

Two countries separated by a common language! A "torch" would be a flashlight on the American side of the pond. :)

A roll of duct tape is also very handy for emergency repairs to luggage, securing duty free or other purchases and even repairing a loose hem or cuff on clothes.
