Has anyone done the Cabot Trail excursion? I will be on the Maasdam in September 2008 and am trying to find ideas on which excursions might be good. I noticed that this one is 8 hours long and that seemed rather long. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

My first attempt to answer got lost in cyberspace,so I will try again.
The Cabot Trail is breathtakingly beautiful. I have been around it several times by car. However, if it is foggy, rainy, or both, you will not see anything.
You might consider taking the excursion to the Fortress of Louisbourg. It is about 45 min to an hour out of Sydney and is a top notch experience.
If you check on the "Canada" boards under "Ports of Call" you will find a wealth of information already there and there are locals who are very happy to answer any questions you might have after you check out what is there.

Its a DON'T MISS trip! You would certainly need the 8 hours to do the round trip, but its well worth it!

We go every Fall. It is absolutely beautiful. A little early for Fall colours but beautiful all the same!

When we did the Cabot trail in Sept. one year we didn't see a thing - so be warned, it can happen. It was rainy and foggy and we picknicked
in the rain under our umbrellas - fun, but was disappointed not to
see the scenery we were expecting to see.

Depends on the weather. You are going along the coast and it can be beautiful or foggy and see nothing. You ake a chance on weather. I'd take the chance because the beauty is indescribable.

The fort at Louisburg is also well worth the day. Lots of walking becuse the structure is massive. Our kids loved it when we saw it. I loved it too but I am a history nut so all things like that are great for me.

Took the Cabot by car on our honeymoon 35 yrs ago and it was spectacular. I would recommend it highly. One of the highlights of our trip to Nova Scotia.

Last year while on the Maasdam we rented a car and did part of the Cabot trail, we realy enjoyed it. We were lucky that it was clear for the most part.

Where did you rent your car from? We also had considered doing that rather than go on the ship's tour.

Can't remember I think it was Budget, I used the downtown location they picked us up at the port, we then went to their office and did the paper work. When we returned the car to their office they took us back to the port. No additional charge for pickup or return.
