Anyone know if there are irons in the cabins on the Oosterdam, specifically SS suites? I know there aren't laundry rooms (only laundry service), but it would be nice to be able to touch up a wrinkled skirt or blouse myself.

Theren't any irons in any cabins on any HAL ship.

Too risky - could cause a fire.

Not only are there no irons in any cabins on any HAL ship, no irons are allowed to be brought on the ships and used in your cabin. On the ships that do have laundry rooms, there are irons there, but they are not allowed to be taken to cabins. The Vista ships (Zuiderdam, Oosterdam, and Westerdam) do not have laundry rooms or any irons. You can have clothes pressed by the ship's laundry or you can always bring a steamer or Downy Wrinkle spray.

Obviously ironing in cabins is a safety/fire hazard and I for one am glad it is not allowed.

I agree about not allowing ironing in individual cabins because of the risk of fire.

I also worry about the risk of fire in cabins where people are allowed to smoke. Apparently cruise lines feel that with sprinklers in each cabin the risk is alleviated.

I sure hope so!

I know that the risk of fire is much higher from smoking than from ironing. In addition, ironing doesn't leave much residual smell in the rooms.

You could also make the same arguments (being fire hazards) about hair dryers and curling irons that you do for irons. I think that the main reason they don't allow irons is that it's another way to squeeze the pax for more cash.

Wow...how did we jump to agendas so soon? Smoking and evil money gouging HAL.

Instead of an iron, try a steamer which is allowed. Does almost the same job, or take your wrinkled items into the bathroom while you shower. The shower steam will make all but the touchest wrinkles fall out.

I really like to travel with a steamer. I even use one at home on delicate items that I am afraid to iron.

The bathroom thing and steamers work for most fabrics, but there are some that just have to be ironed to look good. Don't get me wrong though, I was never one to be concerned about the wrinkled look. The same can't be said for my wife though. She thinks nothing of ironing something right out of the closet just before she puts it on.

I'll admit that the gouging comment was a cheap shot, but I stand by my smoking comment. If anyone was concerned about fires, smoking is the No. 1 hazard by a long shot and I'd be willing to bet that fires caused by irons isn't even in the top 5. If irons were a hazard hotels wouldn't be putting them in their rooms.

Sailed the Oosterdam Transatlantic and irons WERE allowed in the cabins - you went to the pursers desk and requested it and your cabin steward brought both an iron and an ironing board to your cabin. We did it -no problem.
