I just returned from my 2nd cruise on the Zuiderdam (originally on maiden voyage) and thought I'd give everyone an overview of the highlights both good and bad.

We arrived at the pier around 1230pm as we wanted to avoid the rush of people who arrive early and just sit around in the crowd waiting for embarkation. At 1230 embarkation was well underway.

We had a Deluxe Verandah Suite on Rotterdam deck and were directed to the suite check-in desk. I was very disappointed with the check-in as they were understaffed in the suite section. We had three parties ahead of us, and it still took over an hour of waiting in line. The other line for non-suite passengers moved very swiftly.

Once onboard a crew member escorted us to our stateroom. I am generally underwhelmed with HAL's suites. Unlike Celebrity, there is no use of fine materials such as marble, nice fabrics etc. Nonetheless, the layout was great and the balcony was wonderful.

Upon arriving in our suite we noticed it was filthy. In fact, we realized the bed sheets had stains that I won't discuss. The mirrors and glass coffee table were covered with fingerprints. The bathroom did not have all the lotions, soaps, shampoos etc. that were supposed to be there. Also, we did not have laundry bags and the complimentary umbrellas we were supposed to have. The bathroom was adorned with hairs (not ours) and make-up stuck to the counters. I called the Neptune Lounge (concierge) to complain. The room steward appeared and said that he did not have much time to clean our cabin because the previous guests departed late. Our steward did not apologize and had no command of the English language. Over the next few days things got worse...the cabin was not made up until late afternoon, and our steward was nowhere to be found. Additionally, we did not order room service beyond the second day as they were never on-time (more than one hour late) and could not get orders right. Beware of room service...(i.e. if you order coffee make sure you also request sugar and cream if you need it...there is no insight on behalf of room service. If you order coffee that is all you will get...remind them to bring a cup). Eventually, the chief housekeeper showed up several days into the cruise. He assured us things would get better. They did. With credit to HAL housekeeping sent us a very nice bottle of Cabernet and the Neptune staff sent us chocoloate covered strawberries for our inconvenience.

The Neptune Lounge is supposed to be a full service concierge service for suite guests. The lounge is lovely and there are always beautiful food displays....they taste great too! There is a fantastic cappuccino machine and fresh juice is always available. However, the staff in this lounge rotates from the front desk on a monthly basis. There are always two representatives who share the month. Apparently, according to the staff, this is their least favorite assignment as they don't like working with "needy American passengers". I was shocked when one of the concierge's told me this. Our staff, Avon and Irene, had no command of English and were very passive aggressive and were basically useless. For example, I would ask a question like when is my laundry going to be returned? The answer might be, "oh you have laundry to be picked up?". Conversations with these ladies always went in circles and many other passengers experienced the same.

Now...the positives. The food was outstanding!!! Not only was the food varied in selection as there was truly something for everyone, but the wait staff was excellent!!! Our waiter did his job quietly, but every so efficiently. Food was always served hot. Our busboy quickly learned our coffee, tea preferences etc. Also the somelier in the dining room was wonderful and always available. The Pinnacle grill was so great that we dined there twice. Interestingly, there are only Eastern European wait staff in the Pinnacle and the main dining room has only Indonesian staff. Our Pinnacle waiter was a former Celebrity employee who came to HAL for the opportunity to work in the specialty restaurant. Apparently, Celebrity chooses only a handful of wait staff to work their specialty restaurants and opportunities are rare. The deck buffets were the best I've experienced on 34 cruises. Variety was wonderful and quality was high. I think the food on the buffets was better than Celebrity and dining room food was comprable.

The ship is gorgeous and better than ever. The only design comment is that there appears to be a "bottle neck" effect at places on the ship. For example, around the photo gallery.

The production shows were great! The other entertainment was poor to fair. The cruise director worked hard to keep all happy and was very likeable.

We did the Eastern Caribbean itinerary. Half Moon Cay is the best! We had the tan cabana and it saved us from the rain. I highly suggest booking a cabana for this port. Also, if you go to baths on Virgin Gorda, don't leave your things in the lockers. Take your belongings with you on the hike through the baths and you will end up a beach on the other side. There is a trail here that leads up to the transportation back to the ferry.

Overall, HAL remains one of my favorite "bangs for the buck" along with Celebrity. All other major commercial lines (i.e. Princess, RCCL, NCL, Carnival) are a huge step below both HAL and Celbrity. We will absolutley cruise on HAL again, despite our poor initial impression that was really the result of one person. Hats off to HAL!

Thank you for your review. I noticed that you had the tan cabana on Half Moon Cay. Did you find it convient to most things? We have it booked for our December cruise. Thanks again.

Thanks for posting your review.

Glad you enjoyed your cruise in spite of a couple of problems.

To walk into a cabin and find it filthy and the bathroom filthy - GROSS!

We have been very fortunate to have had excellent concierges on the various HAL ships we have been on. In fact, a couple of them told us that they liked working in the Neptune Lounge.

Thanks again for your post.

We shared the cabana with another family and it was very nice to have. It comes stocked with sodas, water, chips, salsa, guacamole, ice cold towels, water mats, and snorkel equipment. The bar stewards will even bring you food for lunch or snacks.

The cabana is air-conditioned and was a great shelter from some heavy rain.

Yes...the tan cabana is the most convenient one. Have fun on this wonderful cruise!

Do you mind if I ask which room you had? We are going on the 09/04 and are in an S room. I hope we have a different room steward than you did. I'm glad you're overall trip was good. We are so looking forward to ours. Thank you

It would seem that the stewards are a weak point. This is one consistant remark from people... I will say that our room was always made up and clean. But it was more like dealing with a hotel staff than cruise staff- ie it was impersonal. You did the right thing getting the head housekeeper involved. Still I would think that this is an area that HAL should work on improving to stay competitive. On Celebrity I had the head housekeeper check in with me to see if all was well- and i was staying in an INSIDE CABIN that criuse (cheap carbbean spring break with kids cruise). Not only that our room steward took personal responsibility for getting a menu ordering dinner for my daughter and delivering it at a set time. It was all I could do on HAL to get a laundry bag AND a inventory sheet at the same time ! I was in an SS and would agree that the bathrooms are really a disapointment in terms of the quality of the materials. But it was a BIG plus having a jacuzzi tub in a non-suite cabin. !
All in all I had a similar experince on my recent Westerdam cruise. I agree with you on the food- it was BETTER than my Celebrity cruise. But no one on that board will believe me. They are all hypnotized into believing that Celebrity has the best food. I did not find that on either of my two cruises with them. Do love the line though- just dont buy the hype.

Thank you very much for taking the time to post your experiences! It is always insightful to read experiences of those who have cruised a variety of cruiselines.:)

Your comment about the stains on the sheets... I've often thought of taking a set of new sheets from home, such as a clearance-priced set from an outlet store that don't match my bedroom sets at home. (They don't have to be 300-thread count - just sheets I know are definitely clean). That way, if they do get lost or whatever, then it wasn't that much money to lose (usually under $20). Your comments are actually having me think twice about it just in case. The one thing I can't stand is sleeping in someone else's dead skin cells. I can go backpacking and camping and sleep on the ground in my own sleeping bag, but I definitely cannot sleep in someone else's stained/dirty sheets. (Yes, I may be weird.)

Could this possibly be a problem with the housekeeping management on the Z???

When we were on the Ryndam last month we were in a veranda room ( "A" category, 2 different rooms and stewards on our B2B) and had absolutely the nicest stewards who were very on top of our needs. I actually wrote a note to Theo Haanen, the Hotel Manager, to commend his staff, as they were totally awesome!! :)

Thanks for posting your comments.

I would have been totally grossed to enter a dirty cabin. I would not have waited two days for Chief Housekeeper to come to me. I would have acted much sooner than that. I am happy to hear all worked out well in the end.

Like KK, the Concierges have always told us they wait for the opportunity to be in the Neptune Lounge. Most of the front office ladies really like doing that.....not to mention the tips they receive. Not many folks I know tip the front office staff but most suite pax tip the ladies in the Neptune Lounge. We have found (almost) all of them to be delightful.

Welcome back....happy for the most part you enjoyed your return to Zuiderdam.

We are looking forward to our return cruise there upcoming in October.

Jacqueline:

We love both HAL and Celebrity. In fact, we were on the 1/2/04 10 day Summit sailing and will return on 12/27/04 for the 11 day New Year's.

I'm with you though...HAL has much better menus and for the most part, better food. The big difference I believe is that the breakfast and lunch buffets are superior on HAL, but Celebrity has a slight advantage in the dining room for dinner.
