Does anyone know if a VA balcony/verandah deck on the new Eurodam would be a good choice? Never had a balcony on the stern. Good idea or not? Pros/Cons?

From the pictures we've seen of her in the shipyard, all the aft verandahs are almost completely covered, and the size of the outdoor space appears to be much diminished from those on the Vistas in their original configuration...
...so in my opinion, there's very little reason to book an aft VA on Eurodam.

I've been studying the pictures others have posted and I find it very hard to tell. I thought it might be nice to look out the back of the ship and watch the wake but don't want an undesirable cabin and balcony. Would it be a better choice to book a VA cabin on the side either aft or forward?

Forgot to ask one more thing. Is it noisy and do you feel more vibration?

is always an aft cabin since you can see both sides and have a fond farewell leaving each port. The verandas are usually deeper giving you more space than side cabins.

Yes, on lower decks there is more vibration...
...and on Deck 8 there are often complaints about noise from above.

Not on Eurodam...

Thanks Brian. We decided to change to a booking on the port side instead of the stern. Not worth worrying about.

Wow, I just looked at the Eurodam deck plans and the aft balconies appear to be twice as large as those on the sides.

We were going to spend the extra $$ to have an aft balcony on the Eurodam for the 15night sailing Aug 15th. We decided against it . Although they may be twice as big as regular they do not come close to comparing to the the Westerdam, where our aft balcony was 150 sq feet, half covered and half open and no extra cost.
Fortunately someone here pointed that out to me before I wasted my $$.
We love aft, but after the dissapointment we had witht he Navigator of the Seas aft, we will be very careful from now on.

The deckplans for Eurodam also show forward-facing windows in the Deck 10 SZ's - But there won't be any...
Have a look at this pic and see what you think - they don't look much deeper than those on the side to me except for those on Deck 4 - If they do end up deeper, I'll be very much surprised.

Were you on a Transatlantic Carnival Cruise in 2006?

Sailor Gal,
We had a VA on the stern of the Noordam in February (#5188). Loved it. I would assume they are similar on the Eurodam...go for it!

After seeing Brian's photo of the stern of the Eurodam, I take back what I said. Not as much "pitch" (or whatever the terminology is) to the stern of the Eurodam than that on the Noordam.
It appears to me that the depth of the verandah's from Deck 5 up, are very similar to the depth of the verandas on port and starboard of the ship.
Given the fact that there is some vibration on the stern, I think I'd opt for a stateroom on either the port or starboard side...since the verandas aren't any larger.
Unless you really love watching the wake of the ship...

Brian, Looks like you are an avid HAL cruiser. My husband and I have done many RCCL cruises and are ready for something new. We have been looking at the Eurodam and are thinking of doing this next spring. We are in our early 60's but are by no means ready to knit blankets. We are both still working and have children in their late 20's so we are in tune with what is going on. My point I guess is that I have heard wonderful things about HAL but am wondering if it will be tooooo quiet for us. We love the pool, casino, and some good coktails. We are late diners and usually aren't ready to call it a night until at least 1am. Any response you can give would be greatly appreciated.

I think you'll enjoy HAL - I'm in my early 40's and I certainly enjoy myself, generally staying up until 1pm or so...
...the venues for the post-show/night-owl crowd are generally the Crow's Nest and the Northern Lights Disco.
Keep and eye on the posts from the Inaugural - I'm bringing my parents along who are the same age as you for their first cruise.

That's what I assumed when I booked our Deck 5 accommodations for the inaugural - that the stern would be like Noordam...
...needless to say I'm disappointed, but there's not a whole lot I could do - no chance of getting a side-facing suite w/ a V(x) next door for M&D anywhere else on the ship at that point.

Interesting, because in the photo you posted, the verandahs appear to be exactly the same size (the way the verandah's wrap around from the side to the stern). I could swear in earlier photos, the stern appeared more like the Noordam. Hard to argue with it though, since this is an actual photo of the Eurodam.
There are other benefits, though, other than the larger verandah...watching the wake and being able to see from side to side as you sail.
I'll bet mom and dad getting excited!

Quite true - I keep reminding myself that there must be some benefit of being at the stern on our itinerary...
Yes they are - M&D have been out buying gowns and tuxedoes lately!
;)
