I have never been on a Holland American cruise. I would be going with my husband, 2 sons age 11, parents, brother, sister in-law, nephews 6 and 15. Is this a good ship for families?

The ports are Grand Turk, St. Thomas, British Virgin Islands, and Private Island. The ports look good. We enjoy beaches.

How is the ship? Food? Activities? Youth Programs? Pools? Entertainment?

Although (IMHO) all HAL ships are wonderful, the answers to your questions would be speculative at this point. The Eurodam's very first cruise is scheduled for this summer!

We are booked on that itinerary for December of 2008. The Eurodam will be an evolution of the current Vista class ships. In terms of dining, in addition to the Lido (casual) and the main dining room, and the Pinnacle Grill (specialty steakhouse) there will be 2 new specialty restaurants - Tamarind (pan-asian) and Canalotto (Italian). The Eurodam will also have the usual HAL amenities onboard- Culinary Arts Center, Internet cafe, library, spa and fitness area with pool and thermal suites, Club Hal for kids and The Loft for teens. For other recreation, there is the Lido pool and whirlpool which I believe has a sliding cover and a sea view pool towards the back of the ship. There is also a volleyball court and basketball court shown on the sports deck. In terms of shows, I haven't seen any details yet, but the theatre area is supposed to be an expanded layout from the Vista class.

How much info has come out on that Canaletto restaurant? On the deck plans it looks to be just one very small corner of the Lido.

It's small-- supposedly 66 seats with some kind of movable walls to partition it off from the Lido. Hoping to see a menu soon as the DH is a vegetarian so I'm hoping this might be a good option for us for 1 night.

We'll get to see it first-hand on Oct 15 when we do a 3-day "check out" cruise! :D

Thanks for responding. I didn't know the ship was new. It really looks nice, I think we are going to book for November.

The Dec. 13 was originally supposed to stop at Tortola also, but was changed to San Juan. My TA said she was told that the port at Tortola was full or something. I am actually pleased to stop at San Juan as I have always wanted to see El Yunque.

Me too. Usually stops in Puerto Rico are so short there's no time to do anything. But 13 hours is great!:D

Can't wait to see and sail Eurodam. There is a large group of CC'ers booked for a three day Prelude Cruise and the followingt ten day Maiden Voyage. Some of the group are continuing on for an additional ten days.
We can't wait to board her in Rotterdam in July.
