Clamshells are a halfmoon shaped shade awning, it covers 3 lounge chairs wide and a little better than half the lounger is in the shade. It is only about 5 feet tall, you dont stand under it, you sit under it :) You rent them from the water sports stand for $9.00 for the day, they will give you a pole to go pick out your clamshell location (they are permenatly positioned on the beach) and you just slide the pole in to keep it up :)
There are lots of pictures of them, they are the blue things on the beach, just do a search for Half Moon Cay Pictures.

You need to reserve one early. They were sold out in the middle of the week on our trip.

Can you reserve the clamshells before you sail or do you need to reserve them once onboard???

Once you have one you will rent another or move up to a cabana on a future cruise.

You can fill out a shore excursion form when you get on the ship to reserve a clamshell.

Ok ... I've not been to HMC since January 2002 (been cruising elsewhere for 2 years). What do "clamshells" look like? Does anyone have photos??

The last time we were on HMC, there were only 2 lounge chairs under each clamshell.

Has this changed?

Isn't it crowded with 3?

I was going to ask that same question, it must have changed and now they have 3 lounges.

They now put three chairs underneath and prohibit renting them to anyone who has visited the buffet more than once a day.:D

Thanks for the great response about the clamshells. We will rent one on the first day of the cruise. Leaving on Zuiderdam on Dec. 4th.

hahahaa yes its crowded with 3! You can put 1, 2, or 3, in there, I was just using that to show the size of the clamshells, but we did see 3 lounge chairs in some of them.

A bit tight with three lounge chairs. Two-very comfortable. We booked on the first day onboard with Shore Excursion. Many disappointed cruisers trying to book when they reached HMC. Provides plenty of shade. Good Luck and enjoy.;)

Ziggy7, thanks for the link to the picture! It's not what I expected, but VERY nice. I'll be sure to get one when we're at HMC. Looks PERFECT for my needs.

When did they start charging for the clamshells? The first time we (my husband and I) sailed on HAL, at lunch the day before we were due at HMC, a tablemate told us all about it, and that he had been there (about 5or 6 times?) He told us 'you have to leave the ship early to get a blue sunshade, you can leave you towels and bags in it and no one will bother it, then come back to the ship for lunch.
......OK......Maybe he told us wrong. We did stay there all day. This would have been in 2000 I think....The years are starting to run together.

I don't remember them from our first trip to HMC in '99, but I spent my time at the bar in the BBQ area, so I may be fuzzy on the details.....

Well, it was purely for health reasons - there wasn't any other shady place. And it was mostly fruit juice.

From looking at the pictures, it appears that you are enclosed on three sides. With the sun beating down doesn't it get hot in there? Is there some kind of opening so that there is cross ventilation?
