We are sailing for the first time with HAL and on the Maasdam next month on a 10 day cruise. Does anyone know if there are theme nights? I read one fairly recent trip report that there was a Mardi Gras night and passengers had some costume attire. This would be helpful to know in advance. Thank you.

We just returned from Maasdam's 15-day Panama Canal cruise. We had a theme night the fifth night: Mexican Fiesta Night. It was announced the day before, I think giving us two ports in which to shop for fiesta-looking costumes. Most people in the early seating dining room did dress up, with at least sombreros, other hats, colorful clothing, etc. It was fun to see so many in costume.

The Captain also scheduled a Black and White Ball for the last formal night, although it wasn't required for us to wear black or white.

I agree with you that it would be helpful to know about these nights in advance!

On cruises we have been on in recent years, prior cruisers did not care for or attend the 'theme nights'. I guess most of us have 'been there, done that'.
