We're back. We don't want to be back, but we are. First off embarkation was a little slow. We arrived at 11:15 and had to wait outside in line for about 30 minutes. Then another 30 minutes inside. Once on the ship, they hustled you off to the lido for lunch. We had the option of checking in our hand luggage on deck two, while we waited for the cabins to be ready. Cabins were ready about 1:15pm.

We were on the Navagation deck, cabin 8010. The cabin was spotless and attractive. The only negative I could find is that there in not much counter space in the bathroom. Compensate by bringing one of those hanging toiletry
bags that you can pick up at a Totes store. Water pressure about blew us out of the shower. That was great. Also had adjustable and removeable shower heads. When you shower, you will feel like you can't get the soap rinsed off. One of the girls from the spa, said that is because the Z has the most incredible soft water. The balcony is covered and very private, because the dividers cannot been seen through. Watch the closets. The shelves can be pushed up for more hanging clothes space, which is a great option as some may need more shelf space. This makes the closets very optional. Our cabin steward was pleasant and helpful.

We found the decor of the ship a bit more pleasant than some have reported. Holland America has used some bright colors, but not as wild as we thought.
We felt the lay out of the ship made it easy to get around.

The food on the lido does give you many options, but the food is not as good as Princess. We think Princess can blow away HA in the Lido area.
The food in the main is good, with a decent selection each evening.
We ate at the Pinnacle, called the Odessey on the Z, three times. My husband had the rib-eye, the large filet and the porterhouse. I had the rib-eye each night. We thought the steaks were wonderful and a treat to the palate. We also have eaten at Ruth Chris', etc. We have also eaten prime beef, which very few restaurants serve in this country. This restaurant on the Z, has very good beef and excellent service. It is quiet and pleasant after the rush and noise of the main dinning room. It is well worth the 20.00 per person for many reasons. By the way. After you stare at your 350.00 plate that is sitting in front of you, when you sit down, look down at the silver chairs you are sitting on. They are worth 2,000.00 each.

Pools are very cold in the morning. Only the very brave swam early.

We saw the magician. He's good. A little different than some.

The staff on the Z, we found, to be the most polite we have ever encountered on a cruise. If you smile, they will bend over backwards to help you. We honestly did not run into any crew member that was unpleasant.

We found the gift shop over priced on jewelry, but maybe to some it will be a bargain. Good prices on the liquor towards the end of the cruise.

We loved the casino. We won 1,100.00 on the roulette table. All the dealers were really nice. Not a grumpy one in the bunch. The table seems to repeat certain numbers are certain nights. If you have a favorite, forget it. Go with the numbers that are coming in on any given night. That's how we did it.

Half Moon Cay is as beautiful as ever. We went early and were able to get some sun, before the heavy 40 min. shower.

We went to Tortola first, then St. Thomas. We went to Cane Garden Bay.
There are enough chairs for rent for three ships. Plenty of space. I think this is one of the most beautiful beaches I have ever seen for many reasons. The water is crystal clear. The sand pure white and no rocks in the water. The setting with so many coconut palm trees, sail boats moored off shore, little quaint restaurants dotted along the beach, many facilities, cool breezes. Well worth the roller coaster ride to get there. Don't miss the kid selling fresh cut whole coconuts for you to drink real coconut juice from. Makes a great picture. By the way. Who ever told you Pussers is an easy walk from the ship is crazy. Folks it is a long hike to Pussers. Grab a cab. It is worth the 3.00. After that we were right down town and did our shopping. Then in the middle of town is a taxi stand, where you can grab a cab back.

In St Thomas we took a cab to The Marriot Resort. We swam on their beach and walked around the property. Their beach is not the most beautiful, not ugly by far. But it is almost empty at this time of year and there are free chairs to use, facilities and a bar and restaurant. The water is clear, colorful and has a few waves.

We have been to St Thomas about six times, maybe more. We went down town only because I was looking for a new watch. Remember. If you are looking for jewelry, don't wear any. They peg their customers there. They size you up the moment you walk in the door. Trust me. If you wear a lot of jewelry and buy some, you'll pay more than the next guy.

In Nassau, we paid the money to have a cab take us to The Sandals resort. It was cloudy, so we opted not to pay the 200.00 per couple to swim there, we just looked around. Mind you, they did not seem to happy to have us look around and gave us 15 mins. We are so glad for that 15 mins. It saved us 8,000.00. It is not as beautiful as the pictures. All the restaurants seemed exactly the same decor. The beach is smaller than the Raddison down the street, next to Crystal Palace. We spoke to some of the paying guests and the reviews were mixed, but none seemed sorely impressed. My husband has always wanted to go there, but he has since changed his mind.

Over all, we loved this cruise. We felt it was one of the best we have ever had. We would surely return to the Z at anytime.

A couple of things I forgot. We did feel a gentle sway in our cabin. It was heavenly.
Also, the last night of the cruise, I asked for a NY strip that was not on the dinning room menu. The waiter said he would have to check with the Captain. The captain said no problem. I asked politely, maybe this works. Also the last morning of the cruise, we woke at 6:15 am and were already in Lauderdale. Went out on the balcony, it was still a little dark. There were many small fishing boats going past the ship to the inlet. There was no security around the ship. None. It wasn't untill around 7pm when a tender was lowered. I just wonder where the coast guard or the sheriff's dept. was. Both in Lauderdale patrol the waterways there.

Thanks for your great review. I am sailing the Zuiderdam in March, first time on the Vista Style ship with HAL. I have always enjoyed the other style HAL ships, this one will be different, but we're all very excited and after reading your great review, really looking forward to it.

Welcome home, now back to reality!!!!!!

Welcome back - glad you had a great cruise.

Couple of questions: $200 just to use the beach at Sandals for the day in Nassau?

Why would the waiter have to check with the Captain about ordering a NY stripe steak? (Or do you mean the area captain in the dining room).

Those chairs in the Pinnacle are beautiful and very HEAVY.

We have never used a cab in Tortola to get to Pusser's. Found it to be a very pleasant walk. IMHO

:) :) Hah! (KK, you ARE kidding here, right??)

"Captain, are you busy?"
"Well, I'm in a meeting with the navigator, plotting the best course to skirt a low-pressure area heading from the Honduras. But what's up?"
"Sir, it's one of the passengers. She has requested a steak from the main dining room and, as you know, tonight we are not serving steak."
"Hmmm. Edward, call home office and tell them we'll get back to them in a few minutes about the low-pressure area."
"And Filipo said the woman's husband won $1100 in the casino."
"Ugly American, I presume."
"Of course, sir"
"What kind of steak does she want?"
"It's a New York Strip - or stripe" ;)
"My god, man! Don't these people understand we're working to a budget here?"
"I understand, sir"
"Well, did you run a check on her?"
"Of course, sir. She and her husband are very experienced cruisers. She has not stolen any towels. She is cordial to the staff. She follows the requested dress in the dining room. She does not hog deck chairs."
"Hmmmm. Are you certain she is American?"
"She is, sir. I double-checked. Elena says she leaves her cabin very neat."
"What does the head chef say?"
"He can do it, sir, but not without checking with you, sir, of course."
"Alright, go ahead then. I suppose if I cut our course a little to the south we can save a little money in fuel, though the ride will be a little rougher. Is there anything else?
"Well, sir, some passengers are asking about the Elton John impersonator who left us. They were looking forward to seeing him."
"They don't like the dancing poodles? What's wrong with the dancing poodles? I think they're cute!"
"Yes, sir."

Thanks for the interesting and helpful review. I was glad to read the silver chairs in the Pinnacle are still there; I had heard no mention of them, and they are quite remarkable. And I'm glad you like the steaks!

Roboat - ROFLMAO.:D That was great!!!!!! Probably the funniest thing I've read on this board.

I assumed it was because the only NY Strip left was being saved for the captain's evening meal - but he'd gladly give it up (and take the meat loaf) to keep a customer happy!

:D Roboat, I agree with Orcrone! This is, without a doubt, the funniest thing I have read on these boards or any other, ever. I almost had tears I was laughing so hard!!! You deserve something ... gold star, a placard, something. Thank you so much for taking the time to be so funny! A great addition to my day for sure.

And, Tammar, thanks so much for the terrific review! Great to read.

I contacted Sandals before our cruise. They do let you use their facilities for the day for 100 per person. Now that I've seen it I don't think it is worth it, but I've been told by other posters, that the Sandals in St Lucia does the same thing, only cheaper.

Rod Serling's voice:"You've just cruised into ... the Twilight Zone."

"Well, did you run a check on him?"
"Of course, sir. He and his wife are only on their second cruise with HAL. He has brought aboard a blender and a load of contraband booze in his luggage. He's giving the Dolphin Bar a run for their money on frozen drink service by the Lido Deck pool. He threw special celebration cakes at people whom he thought didn't really merit them. He ignores the dress code in the dining room and thinks other cruise lines are as good, or better, than ours."
"Hmmmm. Have the Purser set up the plank ... it's time for some fun."

:D

You have just cruised through an alternate universe in ... the Twilight Zone

Revneal - too funny!! That would have made a great episode! :D

tammar - sorry for derailing your thread for a bit. Your review was very helpful and gets me more excited for our trip on the Z come October 16, on the western route.

And... good news for you! They are doing the poodles in pastels! :)

MattR we had a table for two. Do not know how we lucked out with the upgrade and the table for two. We keep thinking it was the luck of the draw or the fact that we prepaid for the three reservations in the Pinnacle before the cruise. No neither my husband or I ordered two entrees, but I have heard that you can do that.

Great review Tammar, thanks. We are returing to the Zuiderdam next week (9/4) for our 1st anniv. Our honeymoon was spent in "your" cabin 8010. It is worth returning to this ship!

We felt that cabin 8010 was ideally located as you don't have anyone above looking down on you (the salon is next deck up). Other than the balconies on both sides, it is a very private location.

This year we are on the next deck down in the same part of the ship.

Are these poodle comments for real? Is that now a part of the entertainment?

We are excited to be returning to this ship.

Cheers!

Paul and Alisa

Thank you for taking the time to write your review. We are cruising on the Zuiderdam next April. One question, is it necessary to have a passport or can you use your birth certificate and picture drivers license? We have cruised to the Caribbean many times and this is the first time I've heard that U.S. citizens need a passport.

I just got off the Z 8-21 At our table most ordered more than one entree every niht. On the night that they had Lobster my brother and I each ordered the lobster AND the filet/ Our waiter came by later with another plate of lobster tails for us and our table mates. We had the early seating, so don't think that they were trying to get rid of leftovers. Every meal was great and it was fun to order an entree that I had never tried before, knowing that if I didn't care for it I always had the other to eat. Have a great time on your cruise.

You will be told that it is "wise" to have a passport even in the Caribbean. However, one member of our group does not have one and for some unknown reason doesn't want to "bother" getting one. So I called HAL directly and they told me that he will not need it (though they advised it is a good idea to have one). But you will need a "certified" birth certificate and, of course, a photo ID.

If you go to the HAL website, you will find the section on documents needed to cruise in various parts of the world. There they tell you that they suggest a passport "just in case" you're diverted, etc., etc., and happen to end up somewhere a passport is required.

But in the Caribbean, it is not necessary....just advisable.

Thanks Heather. I did look at HAL's website and that is why I became confused. It stated U.S. citizens do not need passports to travel to Alaska, Hawaii and Canada. All other destinations needed one. Last time I looked at a map, the Caribbean was not in Alaska, Hawaii or Canada. I called HAL directly and they told me I didn't need one (which I already knew from cruising the Caribbean previously) but the last thing I wanted to worry about was being denied boarding because I did not have one and I wanted them to state this in writing. I finally was able to get HAL to send me something in writing stating I did not need one.

People ask why I don't have one or what I have against getting one. It's not that I'm against getting one it's just that I have to apply for one during the week, I have to make an appointment to apply for one and you can only apply between the hours of 9:00 AM and 4:00 PM. It's extremely difficult to make it to the Court House or the Post Office during those hours (I work from 8:00 AM until 6:00 PM every weekday). I would first have to get my pictures taken during my lunch hour and then run down to the court house during another lunch hour to fill out the forms. To me it's more trouble than what it is worth considering I will never travel outside the U.S., Canada or the Caribbean. Maybe I will just bite the bullet and get it done next week. I have eight loooonnngggg months before my cruise anyway so there is no rush. I guess I just needed something to worry about otherwise I wouldn't feel as if I'm planning a vacation.

Thanks again for your response

Ignore post ... I was giving wrong info. I thought ej could get a passport app online and process it that way, but I looked it up and it has to be done in person first time.

Sorry!

You do not need a passport, but you are wise to get one. If you are traveling to either Barbadoss or Aurba, they now require passports. I feel some of the other islands will eventually follow suit.

Hi Tammar,
Thanks for the review. We too are on the Z on 9/4. Cabin 8068. We booked the alternative restaurant for the first night. Congratulations on the casino winnings. We'll be trying our luck.....every night.
