View Full Version : Navigator for a crossing.

I am considering the November 15, 2009 crossing from Funchal to Ft Lauderdale (an 8 night cruise).
I was wondering if anyone has done a crossing on her and what was the experience like. I sailed this fine ship in 2002 on her last Alaska cruise for that season.....it was wonderful. Since then it has been 2 Voyager cruises and 2 Paul Gauguin sailings...time to get back on the Navigator.
I have no idea what the weather would be like out in the Atlantic in Nov even if it is a southern route.
Any experiences to share? Worth a try or just sail her in the Caribbean after she crosses the pond?
Still in the afterglow of the PG the beginning of December......if you haven't ya gotta go!
In the meantime this is a Celebrity year...will make getting back to Regent all that more special.

My first crossing of the pond.:p
Funchal to Ft Lauderdale.
The price was fabulous and I could not pass it up.:D Anyone else booking the Nov 15,2009 sailing?
I know a few people I am going to contact to book....and you know who you are. Imagine, Regent service for 8 days with no interruptions of tourist packed ports, buses, rushing around.
Morning...gym
Coffee
pool....enjoy the ocean view
lunch
afternoon drinks by the pool and gabbing.
some jogging...enjoy the ocean view....
clean up...tub bath with Cosmopolitan on the side....
cocktails in the Stars bar
Fabulous dinner with great conversation
after dinner drinks...more gabbing......
sleep...then repeat. Oh, and constantly harass the crew...in a nice way of course:D
Mr. Conroy...hope you are keepng the Navigator spiffy.

The southern route can be very calm, however I wouldn't do it on the Navigator. We found it to rock and roll a bit too much. It also is somewhat worn.
If you do it, I would suggest a balcony on the port side and fore, not aft.

I agree with suites on the port side -- midship to slightly forward. It definitely wasn't "worn" last year -- in fact, the new carpet smell was still there. Aso recommend a lower cabin in case there are any rough seas. In my opinion, a balcony isn't a necessity on this type of cruise. Although we enjoy having balcony, I don't think you'd be dining on the balcony on this particular crossing.

RMS Olympic

We think alike.... I have booked cabin 520 window port side deck 5. Thats as low as I can go. Although a balcony is greatly desired.....if the weather is poor I would not use it. If the weather is great, then my time would be pool side.
Warn out.....if the ship is not being kept up, I would find that hard to understand for a line that is suppose to be in the upper tier. Having been just purchased by Apollo, perhaps there will be upgraded sprucing up before I get there.
My first Regent cruise was on the Navigator, and I fell in love with her. I hope this cruise will be like coming home. Lets hope there is enough for me to do that many days at sea....I love sea days.....
I guess if I get bored I can ask if I can work in the galley and maybe learn some new things.

Navigator has an extensive soft-goods refit just before I sailed on her 14 months ago. It was very spiffy. And I believe she's had another touch-up since then.

I'm curious--why port instead of starboard?

I, the phobic motion-sick person, have learned to love the rocking and rolling. On Voyager in December, I admit I missed being rocked to sleep at night. Navigator road well, don't get me wrong, but we had some pretty rough seas in the eastern caribbean and you could feel it, but it wasn't anything serious.

Going the southern route, the sun is on the port side the entire day. So if you have a balcony, it is more enjoyable with the sun warming you up during the day.
We just got back from our fourth trip on the Navigator, and like the size of the ship and the crew is wonderful, but the ship is breaking down. In our suite we had plumbing problems (and we didn't throw objects into the toilet).
The deck on our cabin was warped. Its not terrible, but it isn't spiffy like the Voyager or Mariner.
There is considerable vibration aft, and lots of motion.

Boy that makes me feel real great about a ship I have fond memories of. Imagine, crossing the Atlantic if there are problems. The bar better be stocked really good to soften the problems along the way.:D
I cant figure out why there would be so many problems with a ship this young. I understand the hull vibrations considering the original design of the hull....its purpose, its rigidity and strength for its mission which was not intended for passengers. But the rest of the ship was custom designed all the way....things should be of good design and in good state of repair.
Lets see...I need a clean bed, hot bath, a steak, a glass of wine and some stars to watch while out in the Atlantic.....this will be a trip to look forward to with great excitement.
In the mean time....Celebrity Millenium, Constellation, Solstice this year and maybe the HAL Eurodam this time next year.If only the RSSC MAriner would get a cruise schedule other than Alaska.
2010...get me on the shake down cruise or inauguarl of the new Regent ship......who do I have to bribe?

Wendy The Wanderer
February 25th, 2008, 07:54 AM
Oh, wouldn't that be great? Do you think it will be ready by 2010?

Yes, Navigator has little things wrong with it. But so does the Paul Gauguin. I really enjoyed Navigator last year, and I would definitely do it again. Intimacy is a good thing, although I love Voyager (have not sailed Mariner.)

We are booked on Navigator for the crossing and subsequent Spanish/French cruise for May 09. So I have been reading these posts with interest since it is our first time on Navigator ( 3x Mariner and 2 x Voyager).
No ship is perfect. On Mariner last month (Callao to BA) our toilet stopped working twice. It was fixed promptly but I must admit I was wonderfing what would happen if they couldn't fix it! We had the same problem once on Voyager. And on our first Mariner cruise the ship hit what Ken Watson later told me was a "growler" in Alaska and we had to miss Ketichkan and go slowly down to Vancouver. Seems to me it is not not having problems on cruises but rather how the line deals with them that is important!!
I do have one question though -- are there any launderies on Navigator? I don't see any on the deck plans...

Is there a "perfect ship"?
My vote goes to the Crystal Serenity.

"I do have one question though -- are there any launderies on Navigator? I don't see any on the deck plans." quote

We just got back from the Nav cruise to western carib, the one where the ship hit the dock in Cozumel. There are several laundry rooms on several different decks, I don't know exactly where. I used on one our deck. It had a nice Miele washing machine and two dryers. There was also an ironing board with an iron. It was no extra charge to use it.

I'm on both '09 crossings...in my favorite cabin! As I've posted many times before, I love the crossings. The Navigator does seem to have more than her share of plumbing problems, I know...I was flooded out once, but it's still a great experience.

Besides, after just disembarking a HAL ship (with a group, no choice of ship) I have vowed not to criticize a Regent ship fir a looooong time, at least till I'm over the culture shock. Not counting the serious nickel and diming, the dirty cabin, the mediocre food, and the inconsistent service, it wasn't a bad cruise. :-). At no time did I feel like a "guest", and I had absolutely no pinges when packing to disembark. I guarantee that won't happen on the Navigator.

For now, I'm just counting the days until the Spring '08 crossing.

Any suggestions on a precruise hotel? Does it pay to stay on the continent and then fly in to Funchal or stay in Funchal? I have no idea what the island is all about nor what the weather would be like in November.
Its so long off..I may have to find another Regent cruise before then:cool:
Cant wait to get back on the Navigator.......I love that ship....hope the crew can handle me for that many days at sea......gee...can I handle me for that many days:eek: Cosmos in my bath tub soaking all the way to Ft lauderdale...what a life:D

By all means stay in Funchal. Lost luggage and delayed flights are getting legendary. Sand storms from the continent, fog, or storms can close the small airport causing total chaos. Flight cancellations are frequent. And TAP, while a good airline, tends to lose luggage with regularity. It always shows up...eventually.

The TAP-Air Portugal website has reasonable prices for hotels. There are lots of choices from the mega chains to little family run quinta's, tacky tourist to elegant, beach to mountains, houses to rental apartments, etc. If you shop right it's really a much less expensive choice than the mainland.

Sorry.

The weather in November is "iffy". It can be beautiful, or it can be drizzly, or even rainy and cold. Madeira doesn't have a lot of "tourist" activities. Rather, they share the island with those who visit. It's great for walking, hiking, golfing, winetasting, or just relaxing. You can spend at least two days with a driver and cover the island. There are some very good websites that give you an overview of island activities.

We're on the Navigator 4/18 crossing from Lauderdale to Nice - so far I can't find anyone else on this cruise - not on this board, anyway. We've been on 6 Regents and love them all. Does anyone know how Laptops work on board the ship?? Is there a charge for charging them up??? We just like to keep in touch with the world. Looking forward to our trip anyway - just hope there are more people. I'll let you all know how the weather was fro 4/18 to 5/6.

There was a roll call a while back. There will be a few of us, some getting off in Funchal like I am this year. others going all the way.

I hear that my tickets are in, and I should have them tomorrow. I'm ready! Well, not exactly. I haven't made my plans to get to FLL yet, or made hotel reservations. Guess I should do that this weekend.

Should I plan on casual attire or do passengers dress up while at sea for that many days? I am hoping casual, but always pack a suit just in case. Last Decemebr I packed a suite....and licky I did. I was proud to be asked to a wedding ceremony on the bridge of the Paul Gauguin. I even cleaned up good as they say.
Any recommendations on clothing would be greatly appreciated.

We did the TA on Voyager last November. On the leg Funchal to FLL, we had 2 formal nights and 1 informal. For the formal nights you'll need a suit and tie. For informal just a jacket. They usually post in the website the dress code for each cruise, next to the day by day itinerary.

Hi Patnbob and Joanne B,

I'll be on this cruise too, my first on Regent, disembarking at Funchal. I am looking forward to trying a 'larger' ship than I am used to and the overall good comments on this board have been very helpful.

I decided to splurge and stay at Reids Palace for one night before flying back to Virginia the next morning - anyone else staying there or been there before?

Can we arrange for the CC'rs to meet at the Skybar right after or during the sail away - maybe if we all tell the bartender who we are he can point us out to each other and we won't have to wander around like spies trying to figure out who is who.

I'm easy to spot - the one with the never ending glass of champagne in her hand.

The weather should be good for a Southern November crossing! I have done many crossings even in December and it was even nice until the last 48 hours up to Boston, when it finally got cold.

I do not see a problem of cold weather at this time...it could rain though!

Hotel wise we would stay at the "Reid's Palace" a absolutely wonderful Hotel. I also thought about flights to Madeira! LTU German Airways is flying from Los Angeles, Miami, Fort Myers and JFK through Dusseldorf or Munich to Funchal and Business Class Full Flat bed is around $1600...so not bad at all!

Tom -
better pack that suit or DJ! As I recall from our 2006 crossing we had two formal nights - meaning black tie - and most people were dressed to suit. (no pun intended!) On the other hand, if you really don't want to dress up you could order from room service that night or eat at la Veranda(provided your crossing is on Voyager). When yoiu have so many sea days in a row it is really great fun to dress up once or twice!

I did talk to Regent and got told 1 formal (dark suit), 2 informal (jacket and tie otional) and the rest is country club casual! This is for the 8 night FNC-FLL Navigator cruise on November 15, 2009!

Black tux...check
Ivory dinner jacket...check
Black double brested suit...check
Charcoal gray suit...check
Guess I am ready to go. I'm not pretty, but I clean up great.
Guess its the cosmo I sip in the yub before dressing for dinner that makes the difference.
Dressing up use to be fun..now not so much if in warm climates. But for this crossing we can be a little more dressy. last cruise that I felt appropriate dressing up was the Deutchsland sailing out of Kiel. A tie just seemed appropriate on that wonderful German ship.
Warning...too many cosmos while soaking in the tub can be habit forming .:D :D :D

I believe 1 dark suit and a sports jacket will be enough for that cruise.

On my to do list.
Sailing a German ship was very interesting. The people seemed very stiff..and I asled the crew about what I was sensing. They told me that the Deutchsland was known in Germany as a very exclusive ship so that people acted very formal. Well although I do not speak German, but am of German heritage I fely suprisingly "at home" in my surroundings. I think Germans are hard wired to be formal, type "A" ...until the beer is served. Well a second count against me as I do not drink beer. But I found the more beverage I consummed the more I understood a language I did not speak. One you get those passngers going...it was party time. Let say I was a bad boy and had a blast. I would never hesitate to sail a German ship.....boy tose sausage parties by the pool were dangerous....love my wennies:D
Europa....she looks stunning and maybe a 2010 sailing somehwere off the beaten path...I am so over the caribbean parking lot of cruise ships. The Beauty and innocence of the caribbean is all gone.....but thats progress.

It's best not to trust the dress code as provided by corporate, or even in your documents....I've been caught more than once with either an extra formal night, or extra formal wear. However, you'll find the full range of clothing on board, so shouldn't feel self conscious. Some people travel with just a carryon and manage to get by. Which makes me feel really self-conscious when I get off with two check bags.

We always find ourselfes to travel with tooooooooooooo much luggage! Just 1 suitcase if filled with shoes...4 more with all the different outfits! We always say we going to downsize...until we see tha car to the airport is fully loaded again. We always like to dress up...but for us that doesn't mean Jacket and tie.

Hi Phylhering,

Yes, I travel solo so I will attend the singles ice breaker. This is my first time on such a large ship. When you travel with just 200 passengers, there isn't a singles event, but it is easy to see who is solo & who isn't. I usually have just as much fun socializing with couples as well.

Anyone have an idea what the weather is like?

Well, add 2 more to the group for the November 2009 crossing! Just booked Mrs. pnb and me for a b2b starting in Rome. We've previously sailed RCCL and X with the kids, but decided to kick it up this time since we will be celebrating both our 30th anniversary and our newly-acquired empty-nester status, as the youngest will be headed off to college in Fall 09.

Glad to hear there will be some others on board who will actually consider being social after 10:00 p.m.!! OTOH, we are a wee bit concerned about recent reports of subtle declines in ship's condition and service quality.

As far as I read, service and food are fantastic! The ship could be a bit more worn by that time, unless she goes in again for a refurb right before we get on her, but I would say that is a normal things for ships. Remember it is a 24/7 running machine.
As long service and food is up...we do not care if is doesn't look the freshest!

Gee.....if the cosmetic appearance of the ship is that important to my fellow passengers.....
I guess I better go in for a refresh myself. Lets see....bang out the dents in my bulbous bow, sharpen up my screws, grease up my rudder, paint my bottom and strengthen my stablalizers so I dont list too much after refueling in the Stars Bar late at night. Oh the shame to be seen listing in the passage way towards midnight.
Perhaps after this crossing the Navigator will have a new unique reputation on the 7 seas. Now to figure out how big a rubber ducky I can bring abourd for use in the tub:D :D :D

I'm breathing new life into this thread because I just put a courtesy hold on a room for this sailing (well actually the b2b starting in Rome).... thought I'd do some research on my lunch hour....and viola!
My partner and I have been looking for a 15th anniversary way to celebrate and a cruise seemed as good a choice as any. Living in the middle of the Pacific, airfare pretty much doubles the cost of any cruise. So unless it is in the neighborhood, a cruise is quite a splurge for us. But RSSC is hitting all the right notes with their pricing of this itinerary.:D
We were actually pretty much set on an almost identical itinerary on HAL in October until on a whim I asked the TA to see if Regent had something similar.
Still kicking around whether we really want to do this in November (sounds COLD!) and of course grappling with the age old balcony/no balcony question....but now I have something to do for the next few days.:p

As for the crossing....as it is a southern rout and only mid November...I am expecting great weather. The pool will be used....and if shrinkage factor becomes too much a possibility, the substantial antifreeze will be ordered.:D
As the Navigator is a small ship...I expect a very social atmosphere will evolve, and very quickly.

My plans call for a 2 night precruise stay in Funchal. I looked over the 2 hotels that Regent is offering and think the Cliff bay is more my style, Reids palace maybe more "special", but the Cliff bay looks like it could be more lively.
To make things even more exciting is that my friend Crystal 808 over on the Seabourn boards will be pulling into Funchal while I am at the hotel. I think it will be great fun to be on the dock when Seabourn pulls in....I know I would be excited to see a familiar face when I look at the pier when approaching to tie up. maybe go out to lunch at the hotel or go into town for some good gab time.
Rachael....great to hear your son joined the Corps.....it will positively impact his entire life for the good, especially from a work ethic perspective.
Cands out there in melbourne...are you booking? I read your cruise history...I could ask lots of questions over drinks.
As for Hawaii, I am looking at a Celebrity cruise to Hawaii round trip from California.....a good introductions to Hawaii I would think.....but after a couple of times in Tahiti.....my heart says go back to the PG and skip Celebrity.
You know these boards really do keep the excitement up for a trip so far away.

Loungeboy.....we will have to do something special for your anniversary and postnobills. I do have my ways...and making those special moments is a must. By the way...you can tell me all about Hawaii...still haven't got there yet. Hope to do so, my to do list is to go to the Arizona memorial to say a prayer, go to a pineapple farm, and then do a luau on Maui...love my pig ya know,
So book....hey Marcus......do a sales pitch here to convince Loungeboy.
Now to figure out when I can schedule the mariner....maybe 2010 on a long Pacific crossing.

Well the discussion was short and sweet. Well, there wasn't much of a discussion...of course we're going to book Regent over HAL! Can't wait to get onboard and raise a glass with my fellow CCrs.:D

Cands out there in melbourne...are you booking? I read your cruise history...I could ask lots of questions over drinks.

Hi Tom,
Christopher and I are always looking for the next cruise adventure, so you never know for 2009! We are spending 8 weeks on Seabourn Spirit later this year which will use all our vacation time (and then some).

We certainly are looking to try Regent. We were on Crystal last year and then we have Seabourn this year. So that leaves Silversea and Regent, although we keep going back to HAL as our 'regular' line.

On our transpacific on Crystal Symphony we were 10 days at sea from Hawaii to Hong Kong.
We were amazed at how the time passed so easily. It was great fun. We love days at sea.

I hope we catch up with you on board one day.

Cheers,
Steve (and Chris.)

How do you do 8 weeks on a ship that size?
I find that after 12 days I am ready to get back to my own bed.....2 weeks at the most.
I relaize that the number of ports of call can keep you busy.....but the stamina for 8 weeks...wow!
Sring of 2009 I was hoping to do the expedition ship Orion to Papau New Guinea, but they chnaged their itinerary, so maybe 2010. At some point I need to get back to the land of OZ....love Australia. Right now I am considering a Sept 2009 South Africa tour...not a cruise, but a destination on my to do list.
g'day mate!

Wow, I haven't seen info on the Orion before. Looks very interesting. Haven't found a site yet that shows me maps of the itineraries. I'm also looking for something for 2010.

RMS Olympic
June 16th, 2008, 12:31 PM
Go on their web site and request a brochure...they respond very quickly.
Note: the ship is a sister (one deck added) to the Celebrity ship that is used in the Galapagos.
Everything I have read on the Orion is top notch and is a must do for me....especially the Papau NewGuinea cruise that terminates in Cairns. Been to Cairns and its wonderful...especially if you pop up to Port Douglas to take a boat out to the Great Barrier reef.
Maybe we will see each other on board in 2010. Thats seems like so far off ,but isn't when you think 2008 is half over.

Based on the many favorable reports I've heard about Regent, including a lot of posts on the solo travelers questions thread I started, decided to go ahead and book the Navigator's November 2009 Rome-Funchal-FLL TA, even though it's a year and a half away.

Glad I did, as I was able to reserve the last Category H suite that was available for both segments.

This will be my first Regent experience, having been sailing mainly with Crystal in the past few years. Not my first transatlantic, however, as I'll be doing my 14th this September. Obviously, I enjoy the sea days and shipboard life more than another port every day or two.

I was speaking to my TA today and one of the things I asked was what cat "H" cabins were available because I basically just took what they assigned me but was curious. He said the category was sold out and I was quite surprised this early in the game. Glad you were able to get the space you wanted NHBob! It looks like it should be a nice trip.

I booked Cat H back on feb 26th...took cabin 520. As I have sailed in 522, I found it a great experience. I prefer being out of the cabin so a balcony is not worth the money for me.;)
NHBob, I expect to see you out on the dance floor...wish I could dance. Could march with the best of them while in the military..but dance...no.
The Navigator was my first ship on this line...and although the Voyager is bigger and prettier, the Paul Guaguin more intimate, the Navigator fits just right. :D
All I need is a hot bath, a clean bed, a good bartender....and most importantly...some shrimp cocktail!
Champagne gets me in trouble:eek: .....so I'll leave it to the tough guys.
Now to wait on Thanksgiving and the maiden voyage of the Solstice......talk about big ships......this boat better be a real wow.

RMS Olympic-

I'm in 531. A bit surprised it was still available, as 529 and 531 appear to be a little larger than other Cat. H, if the deck plans are accurate. Perhaps people who know the ship like to be farther from the midships lobby.

Interested to hear your impressions of the various Regent ships. No doubt you know that the Navigator's lines were to a large extent dictated by the fact that hull was originally built as a Russian research ship, never completed, and cruise ship superstructure added by an Italian yard.

I only decided to learn to dance about 3 years ago so I could join in the fun others were having, especially on big band cruises. 3 years and several thousands of dollars later I actually feel pretty confident, although I still have a long way to go in Latin steps. Not sure if it's possible to instill a Latin beat in somebody with my WASP ancestry. If you can march, you can learn to dance - at least my first instructor described dancing as walking to music.

Agree with you about balconies - about the only time I'm in my cabin is to sleep or to get ready for the next event on ship or ashore.

Will be interested to hear you reaction to Solstice. I see you have cruised on both large and smaller ships, while my first and probably last experience on a ship that large was on QM2. Beautiful ship, but just too big and service nothing like I had come to expect from 9 previous cruises on Cunard.

RMS Olympic, I agree with Bob. If you can march (esp like the Marines do, because they are the best as we all know), you can dance. Maybe you just need a drill instructor yelling at you.
I went to a Marine moms convention in Washington DC this April. We went out and PT'd with real drill instructors. Now, I am in very good shape, work out 45 min per day, but I don't do push ups. Would you believe, with those guys yelling at me, I did 10 push ups. I haven't done 10 push ups in the last 30 years. And I definitely was sore the next day.
So you can dance.

Anyone else out there booking? So far from these posts it sounds like we will have a great crowd on board....and boredom will not set in.
Now to figure out how to get a steady supply of shrimp by the pool with cocktails.:p
Getting to Funchal should be a new experience as I am moving to West Central Florida so it will mean leaving out of Tampa. Not sure if Regent will route me through Atlanta or up to Newark and then over. A 2 night stay in Funchal will get rid of the flight aggrevation. I just hope the temp in Funchal will be nice.
As transatlantic crossings seem to get a following,I wonder if this could become the start of an annual event...
Hope everyone is still excited about these crossing, good food, good converation, incrdible sunsets and no ports full of ships, crowds, shopping for trinkets.....sleep, eat, drink, exercise, eat, drink, piano bar music, sleep......sounds pretty appetizing to me.:D

Not a bad daily schedule! I would add two more daily activities....read a good book and sidestep the tacky on-board art auctions. Repeat daily for eight days. If that isn't a cure for stress, I don't know what is!!

I am moving to west central Florida...Citrus County just outside of Crystal River.
The builder will start construction the first of September and exactly when the house will be completed remains to be determined.
I am so excited...no more winters up here in Pa!
I am burning every pair of socks I own...flip flops and sneekers for me from now on.
Thearea I am going to live in...about 30 minutes to Ocala, 45 minutes to Tampa (cruise port), 1.5 hours to Disney World and 4 hours to Ft lauderdale and ships ships ships!
The best part is that it is affordable...I can get a new house, pool sprinkler system and all the bells and whistles and keep it under $300,000. Try that any place else ...even with the property values dropping else where.
can you tell I am excited!!!!!!!

Sorry I won't be joining you folks, but after another great cruise on Crystal, asked myself, "Why change?" Decided to stick with the familiar rather than a new experience (showing my age?), but I really enjoy the fact that I've made so many friends on Crystal. With only two ships, long-time staff, and large percentage of repeat passengers, really does seem like family, even if this is a cliche.

So, I've cancelled the Navigator November '09 transatlantic and booked Crystal's Lisbon-Miami crossing instead. Only sour note was that Regent charged me a $200 cancellation fee, something I've not encountered this far out on other lines.

Thanks to all the posters who provided information about Regent and answered my solo traveler questions. Maybe sometime...

If you check "My cruises" on the Regent website you will note that the second night out - only - is a formal night. Suit required I gather. Also as cabins have been discussed here I am booked in 942. Am I going to be sorry? And as for places to stay on Madeira, there are a lot. Check out Tripadvisor for reviews and suggestions.

First, please remember to do a review of your cruise -- we are really interested in hearing your thoughts. We will be on deck 11 in February and wonder if you feel the "motion of the ocean" more on the upper decks. It won't bother me -- just want to be prepared.

Since you have a butler suite and have mentioned champagne -- here is a tip. When you are filling out your butler request online (which you can do multiple times before the cruise -- they take the last one that you filled out and use it) -- ask for Heidsek Monopole champagne instead of Regent brand in your suite. Sipping champagne makes unpacking almost fun!

Enjoy your cruise!

I agree with Travelcat - go ahead and ask for the Heidsek! On our 10/18 Voyager cruise, when we got onboard, we had the Regent labeled stuff as our welcome bottle. He replaced it after we drank it. A few days later, I asked him if we could exchange that for the champagne "with the yellow label that is served at the bars throughout the ship" (how I worded it). He said definitely...he just thought that we wanted "sparkling wine", because that was what I checked on the butler form prior to the cruise. So WRITE IN that you want Heidsek and I am sure you'll receive it.

That means I have to lose one ounce per day for the next year to make my weight loss goal before the trip. That way eating for 8 days wont do as much damage.
Now to figure out how to get Regent to line up the following entertainers.
Navigators lounge:Jim Brickman on the piano
Gallileos: Neil Sedaka
main show room: Bet Midler and Patti Label
Now if I ever win the lottery, I'd charter a small ship and have this line up.......imagine listening to these entertainers while munching on some cold shrimp w/ cocktail sauce, some goose liver pate on buttery crackers and some mushroom caps stuffed with crab meat. What a fine way to spend ones lottery winnings.

It is now 364 days till we sail.
For Col Wes: did RSSC arrange your air and if so what airline and routing did you get. I was wondering if they use TAP out of Newark over to Portugal? Since I will be flying out of Tampa on the first leg I am trying to figure out how many stops/ flights/ changes of aircraft I could be subjected to.

Prada: New years plans are just a wee bit different this year, but I appreciate the invite. The morning of Dec 31st will find me pointing the bow of my Audi southward on interstate 95 hoping to overnight in South Carolina someplace. Then January 1st I will continue on to Florida to start the next chapter of my life. I had to find temporary quarters because the new house will not be completed till late Jan early February. But I will be in Florida away from old man winter so I will be very very happy. Then the fun part starts moving in, setting up the house and establishing a new routine. We Virgo type A people need a routine.
Come late April I hope to either look for a new career or get a part time job and spend the balance in doing community volunteer programs. Throw in the gym, Kyaking, joining a bicycling club, gardening, running a house, spit shinning the car at least weekly.......dont think I will be board.
Oh, then there is this cruise thing.......cant forget that obsession. Since I am only an hour north of Tampa...there are ships down there...not the best selection. But when ya gotta get out on the water......anything that floats will do...except Carnival....to each his own I guess.
Today...time to start pulling clothes as I fly to Ft lauderdale on Friday and sail on the maiden voyage of the Solstice a week from today.
But first to start a short timers calendar for the crossing...most have photos on their refrig, me its short timer calendars for each sailing...Solstice, Eurodam, Quest....and now Navigator.
Oh, and that comment about drugs......its 2 hours of cardio per day....creates a euphoria that can only be duplicated by chocolate.....:p

SATA first class/biz class from Boston to Madiera for just about the cost of Regent's

I flew TAP from Newark to Lisbon in 2006 when I did a TA on the Regatta. My experience with TA flights is minimal (it was my first in many years) that said I found that it was preferable to the AirFrance that I took the following year. The flight was not crowded, the food adequate and while the attendants were all superannuated, the service was not awful. The plane left and arrived on time and it is only a 6 hour or so flight so it was not much worse (actually better) than flying from LA -where I live- than to Boston. I would fly them again. I too am thinking of flying SATA, the only downside is that I can't find any connecting flights from Southern California, forcing me to wrestle my bags and go through security twice. They also seem to have limited flights which change daily. That said I am also unable to find the website "azoresexpress" Any ideas on that Col. Wes? All help is appreciated. Thanks

Before I fly SATA I rather do flyopenskies the small brother of British Airways for under $1000 one way from JFK to Amsterdam, Paris or London and go with a charter then to Madeira. I had a friend flying them in Europe and he said never again, PLUS is just a bit more leg room and nothing more. If you are in FL, why dont you try to get a ticket on Condor or LTU through Germany, they have also a great Business product and with a stop in Germany you could be relaxed and cheap getting to Madeira. Lufthansa has as well great Agent Tickets from the US to Europe and so on!

Just flew SATA Plus to Funchal yesterday....best business class for value I have used.
Lounge in Boston had better food selection than Delta's Crown room...more importantly the biz class seats were as nice as Delta Biz elite seats...comfortable, exceptional leg room, airplane food is airplane food
but still it was good (3 course dinner, hot omelete for bkfast) w/plenty of libations. Most importantly for those of you flying to
Funchal..taking SATA from Boston will save you 90 min to two hours vs. if you take another carrier to Europe then a charter or another flight to Madiera...strongly recommend SATA Biz class from Boston as a terrific option & value to Funchal. r-wes

Prada,
Thank you for your info. I think that might be the way to go. LTU through Germany. Since it's still a year away, I don't have to book anything right now. Things could change big time. Are you going to be on the November 2009 Crossing?

Thanks again for your help.

YES I will be on that cruise!

First, I can't believe we are considering this crossing. We thought that 2009 was completely booked. . . however, this looks good. Could you please let us know what the cost was on SATA Biz class to Madiera?

Thanks!

Thanks so much for the info on SATA Plus. Doesn't sound bad at all. How far back do the seats recline? I know they can't be flat beds. Can they?
Didn't you have to make a connection in Porto Delgado? How was that? Any problems with your luggage? Sounds not to bad.
Looking forward to this cruise. Trying to get some great friends to join us.

CK..seats reclined about the same as Delta's Biz elite seats not 180 but a comfortable decline..yes, you make a connection in PD (about 90 min turn around), another Airbus
320. In PD u do have to check-in again at terminal (not luggage, luggage for us checked in at Atlanta all way through to Funchal) to get your boarding pass for this leg (PD to Funchal)...luggage made it no problem...we would defintely fly Sata + again..
now steaming towards (FL) only 2300 naturical miles away (in 9ft swells)...r/wes

Who needs a totally flat bed though on a not even 5 hour flight from Boston to the Azores? Hmmm I am very tended to book the May crossing, too!

Sata does a credible job, especially when you consider the price.

But be aware of a couple of downsides. First, not all airlines have an agreement with Sata, so you may have to collect your luggage and recheck it with Sata. A bigger deal if you say, fly into Lisbon on Continental and on to Madeira on Sata. You have to collect your bags and lug them on a bus to the domestic terminal. Second, Sata may not have spare equipment to fill in if a maintenance problem arises. It isn't just a matter of last minute delays, if a problem arises anywhere in the system, you can be delayed a day or so. Been there, done that, and don't want to go through it again. It's no big deal if you are flying into Madeira a couple of days early, but I would never try to fly in on departure day!

Thanks for the good advice. SATA totally confuses me. I am prepared to check my luggage through alone (although when I first looked and it was too early to book I was able to travel from LA to Funchal straight through, now that now longer seems possible) I had hoped to travel to Madeira several days early and was prepared to leave on Tuesday for a Wednesday before sail arrival. While that appears to be possible in October, in November the only offering (at least so far) is Friday arriving Saturday. This is not helpful as I had hoped to spend more time than that there. Any ideas?
Thanks

I a lready in contact with SATA regarding a group set up for the flights to Funchal!
I know, I may have to recheck my luggage...but it is not a big deal in Boston and I rather do that then have it lost on the way!

Right now it seems like they fly out of Boston on the 13th of November arriving in Funchal for lunch the next day! I alos contacted a fantastic Hotel downtown to get group space.

I believe for the price...we will do it!
