Hello everyone ! I arrived in Fort Lauderdale today at about 3PM, for a 2 night Pre Cruise Stay.
I am very excited about my First cruise with Holland America ! I have sailed many times, and have posted many "Live" reports, but Holland America Line is a first for me.
My "LIVE" posts will posted daily with comments and photos (internet permitting. . . )
The pics will include Public Rooms, Exteriors, Ports of Call, and cabin photos.
We are scheduled to sail on Sunday afternoon, and there will be several ships with us at port.
Tomorrow will be a pre cruise day to relax, and sit by the pool, and maybe go to an Orioles Spring Training Game (At 1:05PM)
Sit back and enjoy this Western Caribbean Cruise on Westerdam.
Thanks for tuning in !

Great! I'm looking forward to traveling along. :)
Those pictures of the Hyatt sure make it look like a nice place to stay. I've read about it on CC, but had no idea it was so pretty. Too bad the revolving restaurant isn't open to the public any more. :(
Have a nice pre-cruise, and a great cruise!

Thanks for posting the pics. Looking forward to your live reports. You will love the Westerdam. It is a great ship. We went in Dec last year and are going again in April on the Southern Caribbean itinerary. Anxious to hear about the any time dining since it will be new to us.

We'll be on the Westerdam April 6 (sailed same ship, same itinerary last year...Aruba, Curacao, and HMC). We're going with my sister, BIL, and their kids. We'll also be staying at Hyatt Pier 66 for two nights precruise. We usually stay at Marriott Marina Hotel (now the Ft. Lauderdale Grande), but thought we'd give this hotel a try. Please let us know how you like it.

Hello everyone. . .Thanks for the nice comments.
I was up early today at 5AM to grab a coffee at the local Starbucks (.9 mi west of the Hyatt) The temp at 5AM was 79f and will be the high for today. A heavy thunderstorm came through at about 6AM, and the temps will be cooler for the rest of the day. The rain is now finished, and it is a sunny day, but the temps will max out at about 71f.
I am getting ready to go to the Fort Lauderdale stadium to watch the Orioles and Mets play. . .
The hotel has been very very nice. I am very pleased with the accommodations here. I enjoyed a great breakfast, and I will tell you that the staff here is very intent on making their guests' stay favorable.
I am able to view all of the ships in port today, and will have a great view for tomorrow when the ships come in early.
Here are a few pics of the Port Everglades area. . .
More pics later !

Radio, are you in a tower room at Hyatt or a garden/marina room? We've booked a tower room for next month because they were running a special ($169/night), but for next February, we were able to get a government rate of $133 for a garden/marina room.
Thanks for the photos of the ships. My parents just got off the Mediterranea this a.m. and called me when they docked. I was worried whether or not they'd enjoy the ship, as it was very last minute (booked 10 days before sailing). They were scheduled to sail the Zuiderdam on Feb. 9, but my Dad got the flu the day before sailing and they had to cancel. They found out their friends were on Mediterranea and they decided to book that. My Mom said she'll give me a full report when she gets home, but according to her, it was the "best cruise they've ever been on." Huh? I was shocked to hear that. I'm happy for them, but still shocked nonetheless. They've cruised many times (Princess, HAL, Royal Caribbean, Celebrity) and this was their best cruise ever? I'm dying to hear details...

Radio, your trip reports are some of the best on CC. I'm so excited you are trying HAL - please give some insights on your thoughts compared to your normal line, RCCL. :)
And, if you could would you please take photographs of dining room menus? There is unfortunately a lack of them on the HAL boards and I would think many would appreciate a view of the menus.

Hey Radio Thanks so much for your posting. I have posted live feeds before as a Nurse on Board and was very well received. I will be joining the Westerdam on March 23rd for 2 months and I am very excited about this. Please take the time to go down and say Hello to Nurse Annie and the gang and send them my love. Fortunately, very few of the Pax see the hardworking staff of the Medical Center but they always love to have a healthy hello from passengers.

Radio, Thank you for taking the time to post your live reports and especially the photos!
I was supposed to be on the 3/9 Veendam, but yesterday those plans changed. The ship was overbooked, HAL made me an offer.....so now I'm doing the 4/6 Veendam. I'm considering the Westerdam for next January. It's still a new ship to me, although I've done 2 on the Zuiderdam. I don't generally prefer the vista class ships, but when working around 2 working people's schedules I can't be too picky!
Hope you enjoyed the game - my boyfriend is a former Oriole.
Happy Sailing!

Hello everyone ! Today was such a beautiful day. . . . There were blue skies, and a warm breeze, all day !
I drove up A1A, along the coast. . .I had to stop at target to get a few things. I then drove up to the Fort Lauderdale Stadium, near the Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport (Regional)
I had a great time at he game, even though the Orioles lost to the NY Mets (split squad) NYM 4 / BAL 1 Oh well. . .better luck next time.
The stadium was a very old stadium. . .built in the 60's, and used to be the home of the Yankees Spring Training . The Orioles moved in the mid 90's, and are currently looking for a new spring home. . .
I then went over to Port Everglades, so I could get closer to the ships in port today. The Zuiderdam was calling me ! She is a beautiful ship.
As I am writing this post (6PM). . . the Enchantment, and Westerdam have left. The Jewel, Grand Princess, and Mediterrania, are still tied up at their docks. They should be leaving soon.
Tomorrow will be a busy day in port. There will be 7 ships at Port Everglades.

Radio,
I've been looking forward to this cruise for a month or so now. Thanks for taking me along.
Loved the pics of Ft. Lauderdale. When we cruise from S. Florida we normally visit my brother up in Parkland (just south of Boca). I will drive down to the harbor early on the weekend mornings and do just what you did. Watch the ships come in and take pictures. I can almost tell you where you were standing for some of those shots (on top of the causeway and below it). Great pics. I don't think you did it (because there are no pics), but a fun thing to do is go to the beach at the entrance to the harbor and watch the parade of ships as they leave.
On our first cruise ever, we stayed at the Pier 66 (brother wasn't living there, then). We had a garden room. Loved the hotel, its' staff and its' restaurants.
Enjoy the cruise! We have sailed HAL a couple of times and enjoyed both of the cruises. Staff are terrific. Only disappointing thing was that the ships band did not play Caribbean music while getting underway . . . . . either time. Let me know if they do today. Please.

Here are a few pics from today. . .

Hi Mark! I can't believe how fortunate we are that you are doing a "Live" report from a HAL ship. You know how much I love your reports! :D

Wow. . Thanks for all of the nice comments ! I arrived at the Pier at about 1130AM (I wanted to go up to the top of the Hyatt to take pics from the Private Function level)
The check in process was very easy. As soon as you walk in the terminal, they do a security scan of all carry on's, then you walk to the check in counters for a very short wait (less than a minute for me)
I walked up to the Passenger Lounge (waiting area), and I boarded within 10 min. The entire process from Terminal to the Ship was less than 15 min ! Wow . . . That was very efficient.
I went ot my cabin to drop off my electronics, and then went up to the Lido deck for a lunch buffet.( I was very impressed with the selections) I haven't viewed much of the ship yet, but I have a week to go. . .
The cabin is very nice. . . there are several bathroom ammenities, and I like the curtain that can be drawn across the width of the cabin between the bed and the door.
This is a regular Verandah cabin, and there is a nice LG Flat screen TV, and a DVD Player. A note was left in the cabin asking about what fruits I would like to be delivered daily. Impressive. . . .
The fridge is fully stocked, but I will ask to have it emptied so I can keep my Deer Park water chilled !
Here are a few pics from boarding today. . . I will post more after sailaway ! (I had to make them a little smaller due to bandwidth / connection )
Thanks for tuning in !

(At least, I HOPE I'm sailing on the 16th! We still have no cabin assigned and I keep reading about people getting bumped. Hope we don't flt to Florida for nothing!)
Anyway, keep up the great reporting ~ and I'd also like to see the menus!

Radio, one of your photos has made me very happy. The only thing I hated about the Westerdam last year was that darn T.V. It was a very cumbersome, old fashioned, deep T.V. that sat on the vanity desk and took up half the desk. The fact that they have traded up to a flat screen that sits off the desk has made me very happy! It was so annoying having the T.V. take up half the desk area.
As for the late sailing I'm guessing it has to do with the terrible weather in the mid-West. People who were scheduled to fly in yesterday probably got bumped to today due to many airports (especially Ohio area) being closed yesterday.
I hope the change in hotel manager doesn't mean a slip in service. We'll be boarding the Westerdam with my sister and BIL and their kids on April 6.
Have a great cruise and keep the updates coming!

Hello everyone !
We sailed away a little after 6PM, just before Caribbean Princess and MSC Lirica. I found an area that I love more than anything so far on Westerdam! It is the Explorations Café. This is the best thing I have seen in a while on a Cruise Ship. This was added during the retrofit last April. It is up on deck10 (Starboard), next to the Crow’s Nest.
It is a great place to relax, and read the paper (NY Times), and have a cup of great coffee. They have a special deal onboard that lets you buy a Coffee Card ($27.) that includes 10 cups of coffee (any style). There are NY Times video archives, and the Internet Café is there as well. I signed up for the Internet PKG while there ($100/ 250 min. If you sign up on the first day, you get an extra 20 min of time (.37/min).
I will be spending a lot of time up there. The FREE websites on the Internet include Holland America, and the New York Times.
Just as I left the Explorations Café`, I found the Hydrospa. . .Uh oh. . .This might ALSO be the best thing on Westerdam. It looks like that I have a lot of areas to explore on this ship.
Maybe I can recap everything at the end of the cruise ! I just returned from the show in the Vista Lounge, and I can tell you that it was packed with passengers (standing room only) The Comic (Julie Barr) was hilarious !
It is time for me to hit the rack. . . Here are some pics from our sail away. More pics will follow tomorrow. Thanks for tuning in !

Radio,
I'm enjoying your "Live From...." You'll have quite a readership...with your following from Royal Caribbean, and with all of the HAL folks.
I agree....the Explorations Cafe is our favorite spot on the ship. Well, one of our most favorites! ;) On the Noordam, it is on Deck 3. From what I recall on the Westerdam, during a recent dry dock, they relocated it to part of the Crow's Nest.
Love your photos...keep 'em coming!

Hello everyone ! We arrived at Half Moon Cay this morning at about 8AM. They are tendering over supplies now for the day ahead. I should be going ashore at about 10AM.
The weather is a little cloudy with chance of rain all day, but let’s hope for the best. We should have warm water, nice music and good food today. There are many excursions and things to do at Half Moon Cay. My plans are to do a little snorkeling, swimming and relaxing.
I will be heading up to breakfast, and tendering ashore soon after. I will post more pics later.

I appreciate this all the more because I was aboard the Westerdam Feb. 24-March 2 and had the time of my life. My best HAL cruise ever! :)

I second Desdemona about the piano bar. Please go in there when you get the chance and say hi to Jimmy. If you can, take a picture so his many fans can see this wonderful piano man. :) Say hi to Arjen and Carlito, the servers in there. Great guys who enjoy what they do, and they sometimes dance to the music.
I am glad to hear you enjoyed Julie. She is incredibly funny and talented. You can't miss Joel Mason's show either. Hello everyone. . . Today was a little cloudy, a little gray, but NO RAIN ! There was little sun today. . .It peeked out a time or two; but it was very nice and relaxing.
I headed over to HMS at about 11, and the tenders were packed ! I read a lot of review about HMC, and I will tell you that as a first time visitor to the island. . .I was impressed. There are tons of things to do here. I walked around a bit, and wound up over at the Stingray Center, which was very cool. The passengers are in a group of about 12, and you can come in contact (close and personal) with the rays. The Stingray encounter may be the bargain of the island ($29.)
I went swimming as well over by the Cabana’s, and took a little nap(Ooops. .), before going over to the Food Pavillion. They had a great selection of all of the favorites, and they also had a live Caribbean band there for the enjoyment of all of the passengers. I didn’t expect to see so many chickens at HMC (But there were hundreds of people taking pics and vids of them) They were very popular !
I took a long walk up to the farthest Cabana (I know, I know… It’s not that far), then I came back to the Half Moon Saloon, where I needed a large cool libation. I don’t drink, but what the heck. . . I’m not drivin’
I came back to the ship, and tried out the Spas, on deck 9. Whew. . . . What a relaxing day. (Did I just say whew?)
We are just about to leave Half Moon Cay, and I give the Weather for today a score of 5, and I give Half Moon Cay a score of 9!
ODDS and ENDS
There was a misprint in the Daily Program which read that here would be 3 Formal nights. . . That was incorrect. The Formal nights will be tonight, and Thursday night (Grand Cayman) There has been a lot of discussion about that from passengers.
I love the way the Casino works, by using you Room key card for storing your winnings. . .No more waiting in line for the cashier. It is a very smart idea.
Tonight will be the first production show (Grand Tour), and I hear it is not to be missed. Of course we will have the Captain’s Welcome Toast in the Vista lounge as well.
I must now head off to the Grand Turk Port and Shopping show at 4:30. . .
Here are a few pics from today. . . Yes , yes, yes, I know it was a cloudy day, but tomorrow is another day with a Port I have never been to. . . Very excited !
I will try to post again this evening. . .

Radio,
I have a group of 20 family & friends who are really enjoying your posts. We'll all be on the Westy in four weeks. If at all possible - try to get a photo of the Aft Cabins. Our group has four across the back plus the starboard suite on deck five - and we'd love to see a photo if at all possible.
Enjoy your evening - and Thank you so much for your reports. I go right to the computer when I get home to check your posts.

Nice pics Radio dude....... I will be staying at the Courtyard by Marriot on Ft Lauderdale Beach for 2 days before and 1 day after our cruise. Played the Priceline.com game. Regular price for this 3 star (pricelines rating) hotel is $219 per night. We got our rooms for $89/night :D . Just go to priceline and chose the Ft. Lauderdale Beach area, choose 3 star hotels and name your price. The Hyatt is also a 3 star but did not accept our offer. We're flying out of NYC and we're staying at the Crown Plaza for $89 as well ( regular Price is $239 )
This will be our first time on HAL and it's nice to hear good things. Last year was a Costa cruise..........not very friendly to Americans  .....maybe that's why 95 % of their passengers were European.....oh well :D
Look forward to the pics........ Art

ajk-123,
The Priceline trick worked great for us when we sailed out of Vancouver for our honeymoon in 2004. We managed to get a 4-star hotel less than a block from the crusie terminal for $70 a night. When we checked in and they found out we were in Vancouver to get married, they upgraded us to concierge level. It was awesome.
For this trip we are staying at the Comfort Suites. We used our Choice Hotels bonus points and it's free : )
BTW, we want to make a quick trip to the grocery store to pick up a case of water for the trip. Anyone know if there are stores in the area?
Thanks,
Brenda

Were you able to get in your cabin? Normally, cabins are not available until around 1:30 p.m.
Toting carry-ons to the Lido for lunch was always a burden. Great if we could drop them off in the cabin.

I cannot thank you enough for this live report! I am a big fan of your live Royal Caribbean reports, you are great.
You have the best timing for this report. We are starting to research our options for our Feb 09 cruise......We docked beside the Westerdam in Cozumel last month on Mariner of the Seas, and we were really intrigued by how nice a ship she looks to be. We have already checked schedules and prices for next February, we may be trying her out next year.
I am very very appreciative of this report!:D

Hello everyone ! One of the things that I like about Holland America is the Navigation Report from the Daily Program. Here is an excerpt:
“During the evening we sailed past numerous Bahamian Islands including Rum and Samana Cay on our passage to Grand Turk. After passing the Caicos Islands, we will make our approach to Grand Turk’s newly constructed pier”
Welcome to Grand Turk ! We have arrived at the pier at 10AM. The ship should be cleared by 1030AM. They have also announced that the onboard shops will be open all day. . . I didnt think they ever did that. . .
There is so much to do here; I have still not decided what I will be doing ! I will probably try to see as much of the Island as I can; by bus, taxi, rental or scooter.
I will also try to find a local internet café, as I have heard there are many here. I will report on the location(s). We have to be back on board by 4:30PM, and HAL will be hosting a Tropical Sail Away.
Tonight is also SHOWTIME with Joel Mason. The Superstar sign ups begin this evening as well.
The weather forecast is wonderful. It is currently 80f, and will rise to about 86f, with a bright sun, and a warm breeze.
Here are a few pics from this morning and our arrival. . . More pics to follow later.
Thanks for all the nice comments, and thanks for tuning in . . . .

I second the comment on Joel Mason. Get there early, get a good seat up front and enjoy! He is such a talented entertainer. A great musician and a great comedian as well. :) He sells his DVD after the show right by the Piano Bar on Deck 2. He is so nice, so genuine, stop by and talk to him.
Then afterwards, do be sure to stop into the Piano Bar to see Jimmy Maddox. He is the best piano man I have ever encountered on a HAL ship. He'll have you singing along with "Sweet Caroline" before you know it! :D
Please, if you do go into the bar, get a pic of Jimmy and post it! :p

Also could you explain a little about your room key in the casino. Can you still use cash if you don't want to use your card?
Is it okay for someone else to answer? I don't want to be rude. :p
Yes, you can still use cash in the casino. In fact, say you put $20 into a machine and played it down to $10, then decided to cash out. You could upload the balance to your room key and avoid all those coins. Then you have the option of going to the cashier and cashing out from your card. The cashier will swipe it and hand over your money. Or you can keep the money on your key card and use it on another machine.
I was a little skeptical when I first started using it on the Westerdam a couple weeks ago, but once I got the hang of it, I was happy to have this new system.
You can also charge money to your onboard account, and you don't get charged 3 percent. But be warned, it adds up.

Hello everyone!
I made it off of the Ship at around 11, walked around the Cruise Center for a while. There have been several reviews on the Cruise center since it opened a couple of years ago, so I won’t go into details. . . . What I will tell you is that it is much like Costa Maya (Cruise Passenger Shopping galore!) It is well laid out, and very nice. The Margaritaville facility is a goldmine. . . .It was packed all day.
I took a cab downtown to stroll the streets, and I have to say that if I wanted to move to an Island down here. . .This is where I would come. There is no traffic; it is very quiet, and serene. I visited the Library, the prison, and the National Park.
I took a cab back to the Cruise Center, and took a relaxing swim in the warm, clear water. (The water here is much like St Maarten, but calmer)
It was a very enjoyable day, and I am very happy that I was able to come here. . .I want to came back. . .SOON!
I must go up to the Sail Away party, so I will try to get back on later tonight.
I have lots of photos to post, but I will do so when a get a better connection; (hopefully Cozumel. . . they have a great internet Café (Free))
Thanks for tuning in. . . .

Hello everyone !
The dining for me has been very good. I have the new As You Wish Dining program that just started recently on Westerdam. Since I am unable to compare it with previous HAL dining, I will say that it appears very much like conventional dining, except you can show up for dinner at your leisure. The food choices so far have been very good. You can ask for the same waiter (If you choose), or ask to be seated near the window etc. . .
If you come to the Dining Room, and no tables are available, then they will give you a pager and you will be notified when your table is ready. There seems to always be “Live” Entertainment in the Explorer Lounge nearby. The Vista Dining room service has been superb. The waiters seem to try very hard to make sure your experience is pleasurable.
The Casual Lido Dining is very good as well. You can serve yourself, at the Sushi Bar, or Italian stations; or you can place your order at the Bistro Station, where you choose your own Appetizer, Soup, and Roll Selection (The waiter carries it to you table), and then you choose from the Menu (you can view Menu choice samples)
The Maitre D asks for your Cabin #, and then your meal will be served in a few moments. (Most Dining Room Menu choices are available with Lido dining)
You are also able to have Room Service from the entire Menu delivered to your cabin if you choose.
I had a slight problem with the Explorations Café on Embarkation day. I purchased a coffee card, which is nice and allows you to choose any size coffee beverage (10 purchases) for any type of coffee product (Cappuccino, Espresso, Blended drinks, like Frappucino, and Café Americano (Coffee)) However, when I ordered an Americano, I asked for cream (Half & Half), I was told there was NO cream available, He suggested that there was 3 types of condiments available (Milk, 2% Milk, and Skim Milk) What? No cream? No Half and Half? He suggested that I may be able to get some down at the Signature Coffee Bar on Deck 2. Hmmm. . . I checked down there and received the same response. So I went to the Lido Deck, and used some cream from up there. The Food and Bvg Mgr happened to be up at the Lido Coffee station, and apologized for any inconvenience, and assured me that there will always be cream and half and half going forward. (The Explorations and Signature Café really do have GREAT coffee!)
I have seen several discussions about the TV programming on Westerdam. There are no Pay per view choices, but there are 2 channels of free movies every day (2 different movies per channel) There is also a DVD player in each cabin where you can bring your own DVD’s, or rent them up in the Explorations Café ($3/day).
Here is the list of what is available for viewing.

Radio, your photos are just great and are bringing back lots of good memories. I didn't take many pictures on our cruise so am going to send a link to this thread to several family members so they can see just how gorgeous the ship is.
Now, the favor I'm asking. DH and I will be on the Westerdam's sister ship the Zuiderdam next January. We're in SY5001 which is all the way forward on the starboard side of the ship. It has a balcony on the side but a window looking out to a forward deck.
If you get a chance in your roaming around the ship could you go out to the forward deck on the Verandah Deck and take some photos of what that window looks like and even a sneak peak around the corner at the balcony if that's possible and not too intrusive.
That would be just great. And if you don't want to post the picture here you could send it to me at bdglass at charter dot net.
Thank you so much!

Ilovescotland - I'll be in cabin 5002 (a mirror image of 5001) so I'll be sure to post pics for you when I get back but there is a current thread somewhere with good pics & a review of that specific cabin & balcony.

Ha ha, yeah it could appear that way since only the middle section has towels. The near section and the far section (and even the third row of the middle section!) do not appear to have towels, so one could think that a big group came early and saved that section! ;)

I would definitely say the average age is many years older than the average age on RCCL. They are a completely different experience. RCCL is definitely more upbeat and has a younger crowd in general. Holland is known to be the cruise line for the older in age in general, but, that said, it's also very classy and relaxing. I enjoy both types of cruises - the younger crowd more upbeat ones, and Holland and Celebrity's class and more relaxing. I actually enjoy all of the cruise lines except NCL for different reasons. Even Carnival was fun!

and on HAL they have
'early bird seating'?
;)
Seriously, what is the average age on HAL?
yortkrause
March 12th, 2008, 02:34 PM
Perhaps my cruises on HAL have been the exception. I would say that the average age on the HAL cruises I've been on is late 40's to early 60's. Every cruise had plenty of children on board however not the numbers that you would find on RCC or Carnival.
I did not see anyone with a walker on board as has been suggested on many threads, nor did I see a lack of enthusiastic cruisers doing everything from belly flop contests too seeing how many people can stuff golf balls in the swimming suits.
No rock wall or skating rink, just a feeling of elegant relaxing cruising. Isn't that what being on a cruise is all about?

that question doesn't have just one answer. On the 7-day Vista-class cruises the demographics are much younger and include more families. On the longer cruises, as with ALL cruise lines, the ages skew older.
And, age is really a state of mind. I've met plenty of crabby younger people and warm and fun older people....

On HAL, there are two seatings. The upper level is Fixed Seating, the lower level Open Seating.
Someone on our cruise said that the average age on ours was 72. I'm not sure if that's accurate or not. We're usually too busy enjoying ourselves to do an age poll! ;)
Ours was a 10 day cruise. 7 day cruises usually attract a younger demographic.

Hello everyone! Today was a great sunny day (84f). I went to a very nice Cruise Critic meeting up in the Crow’s Nest (Observation Deck 10) The Hotel Director (Ronald Bontenbal) and Cruise Director (Jason Venner) were able to attend.
Thanks go out to Cruise Critic Member Allison for putting this together for our Group. The Cruise Critic Group members who attended the meeting were also invited to a VIP party, hosted by the Captain tonight.
I also enjoyed lunch in the Vista Dining Room, went for a dip in the pool, and took a long nap.(I tried to watch a movie) I couldn’t sleep long though because I had to visit the Casino. The Casino staff have been very nice (my Casino luck has been very bad!)
We are currently between Cuba and Jamaica, heading west. We still have about 225nm to go. Tomorrow should be a fun day in Grand Cayman. There will be several ships with us in Georgetown, GC. . .They are Carnival Victory, Carnival Conquest, and Mariner of the Seas.
Here are some pics from around the ship today.

I think the age also depends on what cruise you are taking and what part of the year. When I went in September to Alaska, it was definitely 65 on up and slow moving down the hallways with plenty of walkers and scooters. most I've ever seen on any ship. LOLOLOL Yes, there were several under that, but not that many. I'm sure if you took a Holland ship to a warmer port in the summer, you would have a lot more younger people.

In my opinion, if you love Celebrity, you will very much like HAL. HAL has great service like Celebrity and a wonderful crew. Their ships are very clean and classy. However, IMO Celebrity has much better food and from my experiences, I'd still take X over HAL anyday, but I did enjoy HAL and you can't go wrong with them. I also love how Celebrity hands you a glass of champagne as you walk on. It makes you feel special. I think Celebrity had many other better touches too. HAL probably has nicer cabins IMO than Celebrity. HAL's cabins are very, very nice, but as a whole, I still do like Celebrity better. I'd like to hear Radio's opinion. The ship photos he's posting are great! Looks like a pretty ship!

If the door were to be left open it would shut off the HVAC system for every other cabin on that line. The other cabins can be inside, or even on other decks!
Not good for the others.
The auto closing doors can also be very dangerous, especially for weak people like children and my elderly (801) mother. ;)

Hello everyone. . . One of the things I like about this ship is the nautical feel of the ship. . . the classic lines, along with the beauty and appointments make this ship feel very special. The pride of the crew helps with that feeling.
I love that HAL still uses teak. . . It is everywhere. The decking, chairs, wall panels. Westerdam has a great "feel" to her.
HAL so far reminds me of Celebrity. . .This ship is very similar to Celebrity Galaxy (except much newer), but not as modern as Millennium. Give me a few more days, and I will give a report card style review of the Service, Food, Activities, etc . . .

It is good to hear this from a 1st time HAL cruiser as I'm sailing on my 1st HAL cruise this December for New Years onboard the Eurodam. We're doing a different itinerary than you though. I usualy sail Carnival so it'll definatly be a new experiance. I'm so excited!! :D

Hello, Sir Radio ;)
The "woodiness" makes the atmosphere very classic. Think ROTTERDAM V, and QE2.
Good to hear you're enjoying your 1st HAL voyage. :)

Radio- great reports, and awesome pics!! :D We'll be on the Westerdam in a month, and can't wait!!
I have a question about your arrival in Grand Cayman- Did the ship change its clocks to Central Time (ie- back one hour) since GC doesn't observe Daylight Savings Time? What time were you scheduled to arrive (7am Eastern, or 7am Central?)
Thanks!

Hello everyone! Welcome to Georgetown, Grand Cayman. We are pulling up close the anchoring location for the day. As most of you know, we will be tendering ashore. We are scheduled to be at anchor at 8AM (We had to turn our clocks back 1 HR last night)
The ship should begin tendering at about 830AM. The weather forecast is in our favor today (86f and Sunny!)
My plan is to visit 7 Mile beach, up at one of the Hotels. . .
More pics later. . . Thanks for tuning in.

Good Morning all, Friday Eve!!!!!
I have a question for you Westerdam cruisers...my boss loves HAL, and did the New Years cruise this past New Years with his family...he was in 4180, which is a SC corner room with large outside balcony...his question is: Are the balconies on the other levels the same size as on upper Promenda or do the get smaller/larger....he loved his room but would like to consider moving higher up on the ship.....but of course he is now spoiled with the large balcony and does not want to give that up....I've tried to figure it out on line, but thought I would just come to the pro's!!!!!
Thanks!!!

Radio,
I don't come here often, but your "live from" is so compelling, I have to log on first thing each day to see your pictures and read your reports.
I am a HAL fan, converted by a friend who sails HAL exclusively. I have to admit, she is right! :) It is a wonderful cruise line.
My recent Westerdam cruise was the best I've taken, and your reports are just reminding me of all the wonderful things I experienced. It's almost as good as being there. I said almost! :D
You have an amazing number of views on this thread, testimony to your talents.
Your reporting is a breath of fresh air, and I am anxious to read your report card on HAL. :)

The aft decks are a bit different on Westerdam, they made some changes when it was in dry dock last year. They are not as open as they are on Zuiderdam and Oosterdam.

I was thinking the same thing, about being able to see everyone else around you!! By looking at the Westerdam though, the back end of the boat looks more level, if thats the way to describe it...He actually is very interested in doing the New Years cruise this year on the new ship Eurodam, of course I have pictures of that, since its not here yet.....Thanks again.

Thanks for letting me know! I wonder why Radio's aft photo looked the way it did.
Are the Noordam veranda's more private, too? I wouldn't mind having one if they are private now. That's why I am a little disappointed with my VF veranda now. Until radio posted that photo for me, I had no idea that it was a little open to above. :( I thought it was very private with the metal railing. I guess I will just have to get over it and stand at my railing, in my bathrobe, like I always do. I even dry my hair out there!

And, this year, the Zuiderdam gets the same conversion. The Oosterdam will get her's next year. :( Gone will be these lovely, but exposed, verandahs. The incline will be reduced to very steep ... like on the Westerdam, Noordam, and similar to the coming Eurodam.

The Noordam was actually built with a more steep incline on the aft of the ship and, hence, the aft verandahs are not nearly as exposed as they were in the original configuration of the Vista aft. Here's a photo, looking down from the Lido deck, on the aft of the Noordam.

We were in a Noordam aft verandah stateroom(#5188) on our recent cruise. My guess is that it was half covered/half exposed. I have photos, but have not been able to figure out how to post them on here! I'll give it a shot again!

That's one of the things I didn't like about Princess Diamond and Sapphire, their mimi-suites are all on the Dolphin deck and the balconies stick out and everyone and I mean everyone from above can look down at you. I prefer my balconies to be private.

I don't think its lucky...heck I can't tell you how much time I was on the phone changing what he wanted......good thing it was one of my bestest friends that owns the travel agency....wish I was on the board more often, I'm usually over on the Carnival line, of course my next cruise won't be until 2009.....oh well, something to look forward too. Thanks for all your help, I'm thinking looking at all the pictures, that the balconies are about the same size for the SC room, and the reason of the slight tier effect is taken somewhere in the middle. thanks again for everyones insite.!

I'm not sure I get what all the complaints are about here. I definitely prefer these types of accomodations. Wouldn't there be less sun blockage for proper tanning? I've seen some pics of dark and shaded balconies before, but this would be ideal for me if I can afford it.
