My husband and I will be taking our first cruise this October 16th aboard the Zuiderdam. The travel agent that I spoke with assured me that we would have a lovely time - but emphasised that it might be an older crowd. I wasn't too worried - we love to relax and would just hate a cruise that featured wet t-shirt contests and blaring music, and endless requests from over zelous directors to make conga lines. But as I've read more reviews and critiques I am starting to get worried - is there going to be anyone there remotly close to our age (early 30's)? If we go to the bar after the late show will anyone be there? Will we have a good time?

Absolutely you will have fellow pax your age. We've always found a mix on HAL ships. This will be especially true on the Zuiderdam as it's a Caribbean sailing and they designed the ship to attract more families. Not to worry. You won't have to endure wet t-shirt contests ... but you will find lots of people (even older) who love to have a good time.

My BF and I are around 40 and just got back from a HAL cruise (Alaska Inside Passage). We had an absolutely amazing time! Sure there were plenty of "silver hairs" but also many around our age. We didn't socialize much with other passengers except our tablemates (around our age as well) but mostly enjoyed the incredible scenery and shore excursions. We love a refined, peaceful, elegant atmosphere, and that's exactly what we got!
If you want to see exactly what I thought of the experience go to the thread "Cruise Diary Volendam 8/11 on this board.

I'm 38 and am expecting a mix of ages, with far more older than younger. I would also hate pool contests of any kind and am not one to seek out a party type of atmosphere. We're lookng forward to a quieter atmosphere. There will still be plenty of things that appeal to us, I'm sure though.

I went on the Noordam expecting to feel like a toddler at 29, and although we were the youngest at our table by no kidding, 50 years, there were a few others in their 30s, and quite a lot in their 40s. It was kind of nice, because it made me feel young

When we were on the Oosterdam last Feb/Mar, there were more younger people on board than older ones. The Vista class ships seem to be attracting more of the 30 and 40 age groups.

Age truly is a state of mind!
On our first HAL cruise, we were surprised to be invited to dine at the Captain's table. That evening we met two couples in their 70's (chronological age). We were 33 and 47 at the time. Well, those two couples turned out to be the most energetic, friendly, outgoing, helpful, and fun couple we met on that cruise!!
Yes, we met others of all ages (we tend to be a very outgoing couple ourselves and leave our "mark" on every cruise), so look beyond chronological age and you will meet some FABULOUS people!!
ENJOY!
