We would like to purchase wine before we board the Statendam at Canada Place in Vancouver. Does anyone know of any stores nearby?

Here are a couple maps, looks like Harbour center would be closest( a few blocks). There may be wine shops that the hotel concierge can tell you about in the are, however they will be a bit pricier.

Go to Harbour Centre, there is a big liquor store there. It's almost directly across from Waterfront Station, which is adjacent to Canada Place. Very short walk.

Get ready for a bit of price shock. Alcohol is highly taxed in Canada. You can legally bring 2 litres with you (per person) as long as you are over the age of 19.

We have bought wine at Harbor Center several times. As posted earlier, the prices are much higher than in the US and the selection is not very good. It is a big place, with high priced wine, and one would expect better offerings. Think of a Rite-Aid with double the price.

So with the tax on wine in Canada, is it a better idea to wait until the Alaska ports to buy wine or to just buy it on the ship? Is there a HAL winelist available somewhere?

There is a wine list-just use the search feature on this board and it will come up. HAL wines are overpriced in comparison to restaurant wine prices and of course retail prices in the US. It is a much closer call if you are buying in Canada. I would probably not buy in Canada again and either order off the wine list or buy some for carry on in one of the Alaska ports or do a bit of both.
We did a sail away party in our suite awhile back so I bought the wine ashore near Canada Place. Could have bought the "house" wine on the ship for not much more and not have had to carry the stuff 3-4 blocks to the ship.
There used to be some values on the HAL wine list, like the Walnut Crest Chardonnay (WS 88 points as I recall) for about $24 but it has disappeared. You will find wines that are available retail in the US at $15 or so can be as much as $53 on the ship plus the 15%.

True, but Canadian prices are much lower than on HAL, also the price you see is what you pay, exept for a 10c deposit on the bottle.

I found the web site for the liquor store at Harbour Centre, it is BC Liquor Stores. I was able to find the wines they carry and the price. The wine I usually buy is $11.00 in NJ and they charge 19.99. It still is so much cheaper than HAL prices.
