HAL is considering charging for private cabanas on the new Eurodam:

Would I pay? Probably not. I assume they are going to put the cabanas up on the deck above the Crow's Nest, a place I only visit my first day on the ship. The cabana concept works well at HMC but I don't really see the benefit here as you are only steps away from shade if you need it on any of the decks.

I assume they are going to put the cabanas up on the deck above the Crow's Nest, ...The deck plans show them on both sides of the Lido pool, in two different sizes. Older deck plans showed them beside the aft pool, but apparently that plan has been changed.

From the article:

Kruse says the line plans a private deck-top retreat area towards the front of the ship that will have "beautiful, almost family size cabanas" that are made of wood -- an unusual amenity for a non-luxury vessel. And for those "there will probably be a charge," he says.

There also will be smaller cabanas around the Lido deck that Kruse says will not cost extra to use.

So, yes and no. They're going to "ruin" the former Sky Deck for star gazing and such with tacky wooden structures on top (won't they be fun in heavy seas and gale force winds ... I hope they're going to be anchored down well, or HAL will be violating their own "Nothing Overboard" policy!) However, thank God it's not the premium space on either side of the Lido Deck pool. The ship is already designed so as to be too crowded (particularly so for those in accommodations without verandah!), and now they're taking AWAY premium sitting and dining space with Cabanas along the port and starboard side of the Lido deck pool?? At least those won't be "for-pay" (at least, not for-now).

I couldn't read the article ... I just got a mostly-blank page, and thought it must be one you have to register for in order to read. :) Why would anyone want a cabana on a top deck, not near a pool?

Good question: A cabana with no pool. Seems silly and "faddish" to me. I wouldn't pay...because I don't have the desire nor the need for one.

Of course, I'll have to see them before I know for sure but can say it is highly unlikely they would hold any appeal for us. DH loves sunbathing....planting himself on a lounge and enjoying being out in the sunshine. I don't think we'd enjoy hiding away in a cabana.

I wouldn't pay extra on the ship for a cabana. DH loves to sit in the sun, all slathered up, of course. And I can always find shade in a quiet place, if not on my balcony. I don't hang out at the indoor Lido Pool because I find it too nosiy. There are loads of places that are quiet on the ship. You just have to know where to go to find them.

As someone who was born a redhead and burns badly (even if only out in the sun for 10 minutes) I will definitely be a customer of one of these cabanas. When we go to the lido pool we always sit at the far end where we can keep moving our chairs as the sun moves to avoid burning. I haden't considered the VT Cat cabin, but will take a long hard look at these if we do decide to rent a cabana for the entire cruise.

Judy, glad you like my Dam bells.

I was reading yesterday about Hershey park and thinking I could take my grandkids there one day, but one of the things they said is that they don't allow any t shirts with any "bad" language on them. Guess I can't wear my new Dam shirt there.:D

I don't think that I'd pay extra for an onboard cabana just for the principle. With the lines creating more and more revenue streams they are going back to the class system. How long before we have first class, second class and steerage ? Cunard had some of that concept and they seem to get away with it, but only because they pay attention to lower classes.

I hope that this is not a trend where we have significant restricted areas for those who did'nt pay top dollar. Remeber the uproar when park west took control of the Crows Nest.

HAL looks at the Cabanas as another source of revenue. I agree it seems HAL are shrinking the percentage of space on the Eurodam that does not have a profit factor. When they moved the Explorations Cafe, it was done to provide space for more stores (and their revenue).

With the price of fuel, I guess you can't blame them, doesn't mean I like it one bit....

Oceania already has private cabanas on the top decks of their ships - and they seem to be quite popular.

I had the feeling that HAL would do this - it turns what was once a blank space into another revenue-generating space.

Would I pay? I might on a very hot sea day, tho it does seem redundant for those of us who already have our own large private balconies...

If it succeeds, look for it to be added to the other 13 ships.

Brian provided the following link, on another thread. Go to pictures and check out the cabanas.

They will be a sure hit, especially if butler services is offered.

From the pics/drawings provided at the Eurodam site, these would appear to be the same as cabanas that a Four Seasons or other similar 5 star resort has. We have seen this on Four Seasons Maui, Grand Wailea and the Fairmont, for example.

Buuuttttt.... that doesn't mean we are interested!:D

Where are you seeing wooden cabanas?

It sounds as though you guys are referring to something other than what lines the "entrance" to the aft pool from the lido restaurant, but that's all I can find and I'm tearing the website apart looking for it

HELP! :)

I believe that if you look at the Observation deck plans you will see these proposed "wood" cabanas.

Will be on the December sailing of the Eurodam. We are not sun people and will definitely rent a cabana if they are available.

Suggestion: If you don't like the sun and like to be outside go to the promenade, it's free! Or spring for that balcony stateroom.

As Helenp said just go to the Eurodam deckplans and look at the Observation Deck. Just outside of the VT cabins you'll see little structures that are probably the cabanas. These aren't exactly anywhere near either pool.

I think it is a great idea! Why not? There will not be that many anyhow and mostly there will be superb service by Pool Butlers, misting you...serving you iced drinks and decadent food!
Would I pay for it...YES!

All good fancy deluxe Hotels doing it by poolside or in the more quiet areas...they are allways booked and mostly have a hefty price tag of over $500 a day and you need to pay for food and drink!

The aft pool is fine, but overcrowded so I would be only there for a quick dip in the pool!

What a great relaxing way to spend a day in luxury in the sun on the Ocean!

So..am I correct that the aft pool is no longer on the Lido deck? It's confusing because when I look at the deck plans, it appears that the pool is in the same place. But on that video, it looks like it's up on deck 8, unless that's another pool up there.

So..am I correct that the aft pool is no longer on the Lido deck? Did they take that extra space for the new restaurant? That's too bad, because I really liked to eat lunch out on the aft Lido deck under the canopy provided for shade.

No, it's still there.
Contrary to HAL's PR, this ship isn't "All New" - The layout is very much like the Vista Class.

Have a look at the deckplans:

Because of the way it was being described on here, it sounded as though they were in the renderings, so I hadn't looked at the deck plans, and those ones by the aft pool sure didn't look wooden :) The area behind the VT rooms in the renderings doesn't show cabanas, so that just confused me more.

On the COOL SIDE THOUGH, there are now renderings of the Atrium, and a little different views of the Rembrandt Dining Room and the Main Stage to look at under the "Spacious Ships" section.

Atrium looks VERY cool

Brian, thanks. I had looked at the deck plans which is why I was confused. In the link that Hammy posted, it appeared on the video that the aft pool was on deck 10. One of my favorite spots is the tables at the Lido aft deck under the canopy. DH and I like having lunch there. I'm glad that is still there. In fact, the Noordam enhanced that spot by making the shaded area even bigger.

X Lindsay,
If you were referring to my post in regard to the sun, yes, we HAVE a balcony suite, but still enjoy watching the pool activities, however we do not like to "bake" out in the sun.
Prada, agree with you 100%, many top notch resorts and hotels do have a charge for a cabana. Was just at the Grand Floridian in Disney, and they have cabanas also, which you do pay for.
Yes, there are areas out of the sun on all ships, but perhaps some people want to enjoy the outdoors and stay out of the sun.

Since the cabanas on the Lido Deck are going to be free, does this mean we will soon start seeing threads about "cabana hogs?" :(

I just think it is great that they try something new...you do not need to rent one, if you do not want to!

I believe they will be on my favourite tanning spot, where the canvas cover was with the comfi seating and the padded deck chairs. That means if I want to tan there again I have to pay...LOl...who cares it is vacation...if not the ship is big enough!

Actually the highest price I have seen for a Cabana was in Vegas with over 5K! Lordy...there I even do say NOT WORTH IT!

But for 100-300 Dollars a day (I bet that will be the price) it will be a nice addition for the guests who like the luxury!

I understand that these are just "artists conceptions" at this point, but when the video zooms in on that area I "see" four tables with chairs out in the sun and more in the shaded area. I believe it is a luncheonette/bar public area.

The Cabanas you see by the aft pool are NOT the private once! It is just for decoration and shade...if it will look that way when the ship is finished...we will see!

As I posted on the Eurodam boards for the 12/6/08 sailing, perhaps some of us would be interested in sharing a cabana. Am waiting for more information about the cabanas to be posted.
