The only REAL MARTINI is made with gin and dry vermouth. One other variation is a vodka martini.

In today's world anything dumped into a martini glass is called a martini. Sacrilegous..........

Cosmos are on special several times during the cruises on the Rotterdam for $6.75. They also have appletinis and chocolate but I don't remember them being on sale. They'll make you whatever you want, I do know that.

For me a martini is Grey Goose Vodka (have never liked gin) Dry vermouth and an olive. Smoooooooooooth as Red Skelton used to say :)

GF is big on Cosmos (from watching too much Sex in the City *LOL*) Some versions I have tried are okay, some not.

HAL does not have an extensive martini menu. Some of the bar tenders know a few more recipes than others.

If you like a special one and want it made, just tell the bar tender what it consists of, and he will do his best to make it for you.

Vodka, shaken so cold your tongue would stick to the shaker, whisper "vermouth" over the glass, and a loooong slice of lemon peel,

It is probably Bombay Blue Sapphire Gin - expensive, no doubt - I like regular Bombay better...

Favorite - The Bloody Mary Bar with choice of Vodka - Grey Goose or Absolut for me... :) and don't forget those X-tra large shrimps they serve with it ... the heck with the martini :D - give me the Bloody Mary Bar any day... :)

Love a Bombay Sapphire martini (no fruit) but they are so STRONG!

In a perfect world, I have Bombay mist with an olive, and a few anchovy-stuffed olives on the side as a meze.

Funny, I just don't like the flavor of the other 'premium' ones -- Tanqueray, Boodles, Beefeater -- and just order Gordon's or well gin if they don't have Bombay.

I like a Ketel One dirty martini. For some reason I prefer Ketel One over Grey Goose. A "dirty martini" is where they spill some of the olive juice in the martini.

On the Zaandam in the Spring, they had martini hour 5-6pm every evening in the Ocean bar. The drinks were $4.95. I think it depends on who the Food and beverage manager is, as to whether they have many happy hours or specials. On the Z there was happy hours at different times each day in all of the bars.
BTW, what is the bloody mary bar with shrimp? I`ve never come across that one, was it on a HAL ship?...jean

What is your favorite martini?
My favorite pre-dinner cocktail is a Limon Martini, straight up, sipped in the Crow's Nest watching the sun set. But since it's made with rum, it's not really a martini. So I'll have to answer by saying a classic Tanqueray & Noilly Prat, on the rocks with a twist......

Sound like some good mixed drinks but my late father-in-law would be horrified! Martini meant gin with vermouth waved over it and one olive, no juice, dropped in. Vodka was acceptable even though the vodka makers paid a fortune to have James Bond drink it and start a trend! :)
I don't drink them at all so I'll sip my boat drinks and leave all the "tinis" to you all!
Espresso martini-that might tempt me!

So I'll have to answer by saying a classic Tanqueray & Noilly Prat, on the rocks with a twist......I'm definitely with you and ASM! A martini is made with gin. Period. But I've given up fighting the battle and now order a "gin martini", though the redundancy hurts me deeply.;)

I'll have to try that Limon Martini. Is it served from the freezer? With a (lemon?) twist? I love rum!

You could keep the rum in the freezer, I guess. Since it's best 'straight up', you either need very cold ingredients - or you have to drink fast! :)

It's made with: Bacardi Limon, Cranberry Juice, Dash Dry Vermouth. All shaken, then garnished with a lemon twist.

I first ran into it on the Veendam a number of years ago, and ran thru the Crow's Nest's supply of Limon. Last fall on the Volendam (it was much warmer and more humid :) ) I drank the ship out of it!

I am surprised that no one has said anything about the olives on board.. they are very small, flavorless, and capable of distroying a perfect martini. I always bring my own and throw a couple in a baggie on the way to the Ocean Lounge. I have also supplied others with a quality olive upon request..I believe a perfect Martini requires a perfect olive..

I had thought that HAL was only famous for their signature "Green Apple Martini". I got hooked while attending the Zuiderdam Martini Bartending Class ($5 for an all you can drink in one hour). I keep going back to that Green Apple one so much that I now make them at home to impress my guest.
It goes down so smooth and has such a nice warm glowing feel to it as it sets in upon you. It uses Vodka instead of Gin.

I'm confused. What's with calling everything under the sun a 'martini'? I love a Toasted Almond, but a TA is a TA, not a Toasted Almond Martini. A martini is gin and vermouth; a vodka martini is vodka and vermouth.

But I've never heard of adding all kinds of other ingredients (such as amaretto, cream, cranbery juice, etc.) and calling these drinks martinis. They are what they are, but putting them in a martini glass doesn't make them a martini, or does it?

The Martini Bartender Class was on the Zuiderdam when we went last year.
I don't recall it being on the Maasdam so I would assume it's not on all ships.
I believe it was on a sea day in the late afternoon lasting about one hour.
The bartender showed the small class of about 20 how to mix and shake the martini demonstrating some 6 specialty mixes. I got my $5 worth and you got to take home the receipe of the ones you sampled along with a signed certificate that you graduated the class. When on the Celebrity Galaxy they had a Martini bar which had many of the same speciality Martinis. Like many other things in our society the original is not always the only. Coke even comes in different varities now. I like the new lime coke. Many land resturants feature the flavored Martini drinks. Just like you can now wear only a sport coat and tie to Formal night on HAL you traditionalist will just have to get over a Martini is not just gin and vermouth!

Sorry, I was mistaken! I didn't know a Cosmo was a 'real' drink.

I used to have a bartender in the US who made me what he and I called the 'Gemstone Series' (what else for a jeweler?): they were ice-cold Absolut, served 'up' in huge martini glasses, crystal clear and sparkling like gems.

He made Ruby with Pomegranate juice, Garnet with Cherry Heering, Aquamarine with Blue Curacão, Emerald with Midori; and of course Diamond, with a whisper of Vermouth. The all had more ingredients I'm sure, but I never knew quite what.

Delicious, potent, and HORRIBLY expensive. They actually became quite popular.

I asked him what they were REALLY called, and he shrugged and said, "Cosmopolitans?"

And that's the story. ;)

ok. so this is the original martini. but, they somehow evolved with flavors and they are put into a martini glass. the restaurants have called their selection, "martinis", as we order from their martini menu. the celebrity cruise line offers a martini bar, as well. whatever they are called, it doesnt matter to me. i just would like drink suggestions with vodka in it. fair enough?;)

Then there is the Gibson, which is served in a martini glass; exactly like a Martini but with only a few drops of white vermouth, and a cocktail onion.

Then there is a Mist, exactly like a Gibson but served in a short glass over crushed ice with either an olive or a twist.
