Our first HAL cruise will be on the Noordam in eastern Med next month. It's our first Med cruise too. I've tried to research the cruise's first stop in Tourlon, France and have not been able to find virtually anything on CC or elsewhere. Has anyone stopped there? If so, could you relate what you did, how you liked it and such? HAL offers several shore excursions, but we really are unsure whether we'll enjoy them since we know so little about that area. THANKS for any help!!:)

Hi Zippercat, welcome to HAL and Cruise Critic :)
I haven't been to Toulon, but we will be visiting Marseilles in May. Apparently Toulon is near Marseilles. Of course everyone's preferences are different, but we're choosing to spend the day in Provence. It just depends on what is important to you.
Have you posted your question on the Med board? There's a wealth of information there and I bet you'd get an answer pretty quickly.
Have a great cruise!

Thanks for the reply and the idea. I didn't even know there was a Med board on CC! But so far nobody has responded there either...guess we're gonna be the lab rats for a HAL experiment in a new port?

I'm sorry to hear you haven't gotten help. That tells me that this must be a new port, otherwise, with all the great knowledge on that board, someone would have jumped in by now.
We had the same problem with a port we'll be visiting, which is Salerno, Italy. No information on that either. Luckily we knew we wanted to visit Pompeii, so it wasn't a big problem for us.
I had to resort to getting my info through rick steves, trip advisor and google, you might try that. Good luck!!

Toulon is nice, easy to get around and you can pick up the train there and go along the coast to place like St. Tropez etc.

We were in Toulon on a TA X Century 1999 cruise, as a replacement port due to weather conditions. We were there for only a few hours, but enjoyed the city. Toulon is the largest naval port of France, has a fantastic opera house, beautiful old buildings, and was great for a walkabout. It is close to Marseille, and thus the area of Provence is available if you are there for a day. We are looking forward to returning to Toulon in 1999 on the Prinsendam TA. Try the mussels and fries!!!!

We will be on the Noordam as well. I haven't been to Toulon yet, but seems a walking tour of the town would be time well spent, as well as maybe a brief train trip to Sanary or Bandol for portside ambience. I would like to also try to go to Le Castellet (about 20 km from Toulon), which sounds like a typical Provencal hilltop town, but I guess we'll have to wing it as far as transport goes. There may be a local bus available at one of the train stations (Sanary or Bandol). Anyone have advice?
See you on board!
