This message is for all my fellow 8/21 Zuiderdam cruisers. Well you heard about how we had to dodge huricane Charley driving down to Orlando 2 weeks ago - and how we had to dodge huricane Gaston driving home Saturday.

Well - Gaston played a visit to Richmond Monday afternoon and dumped over 10" of rain downtown. Cindy left work in Richmond at 4:30 and traffic came to a halt on the expressway she was driving. After sitting still for 10 minutes and no where to go, the water started to fill up the underpass she was stopped near. Then it started to rise and rise until the water started to pour through the doors and begin to fill the inside her BMW!

She called me on her cell and I told her if she couldn't move the car in the next 2 minutes then get out (which the people in front of her were doing). Finally a guy next to her started directing people up the wrong way on a nearby entrance ramp and she was able to move. All the downtown streets were flooded by then and it took her FIVE HOURS to get home (normally 30 minutes).

So far 5 people have died from the flooding and hundreds of cars have been wrecked. I'm happy Cindy is safe and kept her cool during a very dangerous situation. We lost power for 18 hours and over 140 roads were closed this morning including 2 interstates. And another storm is on the way...enough!

I saw some pics on the news and it looked just awful. Very happy to hear you and DW are safe. Very frightening for her, I am sure.

Amazing! Glad your DW made it through in good shape. It's incredible how much water can fall in such a short time.

Oh wow, I checked the picture, I don't think I've seen water that high on an interstate! - thankfully you guys are ok...

Lou I'm glad Cindy is OK!! Well at least you got to enjoy a fantastic week between the crappy weather AND you get a new beemer (can't imagine it didn't flood/damage the engine if water was in the car)?????

I really enjoyed bumping into you guys everywhere and meeting your family, albeit briefly!! I don't know if you've been reading the other threads but my mom's camera got stolen at FLL so we lost all our pix  but Natasha posted hers and hopefully Shannon will send me a few.

Let's all hope Frances stays out to sea...

Please give Cindy my regards and again, I'm glad everyone is safe!!

Glad you and Cindy survived. Pleasure talking with you both in the Crow's Nest last week (we sat next to you).

Scary stuff. We got hit by last fall's hurricane in Northern VA - no power for three days, spoiled meat, no fresh water supply, ad nauseum. Let's hope Francis goes out to sea.

Hi Lou and Cindy,
Glad to hear that you are safe. Hope that the hurricane that is coming to the US avoids your area. But since you have SOOO much water, would you mind sending your extra over to us in Calif, we are in desperate need for some :)
Reality sucks after coming back from a cruise, but to hit so hard just after is even worse. Stay in touch so we can cruise together again....Dennis

What an awful situation. The pictures look scary. It has been a very strange year weatherwise. Glad you are safe.
