Hi Y'all!!!!
We just returned from the Maasdam, and all my worries about the "old girl" were absolutely unfounded. The Maasdam continues to be a wonderful ship and is well maintained, and the new bedding just makes it even more glorious.

The staff could not have been any nicer. They learned our names immediately and never forgot them. What a nice touch! Wish I could do as well in that department!

Our cabin, 003, was almost perfect. It looked as if someone had used brillo on one of the mirrors in the dressing room, but it in no way spoiled anything. Everything else was perfect. The cabin steward, Buddie, was excellent and so very nice and attentive. I saw him often, and he was always quite pleasant and willing to please.

We were on the Canada/New England cruise from Montreal to Boston, and we ate huge lobster lunches every afternoon in port around 2:00 pm after we had toured all morning. While the lobster lunches were fabulous, we were not even the least bit hungry for dinner at 8:00 pm and we never ordered hors doeuvres or tea in the cabin in the afternoon (which is the opposite of what we do on a Caribbean cruise!) We did go to the Neptune some afternoons for the delicious latte and a few light snacks. We ordered lightly in the dining room, and I would say the food was a little below par, but that really isn't fair judgment since we weren't that hungry in the first place!

We ate at the Pinnacle and the food was delicious! The young lady who waited on us was not so great. She seemed to complain a bit because they were short 2 people, and when I asked for some butter for the bread instead of the olive oil, she let me know that she had to go downstairs to get the food and the butter and she would see what she could do. Needless to say, the butter never came (I didn't need the calories anyway!!!), and that left me thinking this gal needed a rest! There isn't much that can ruin a cruise for me, and that certainly didn't, but so many wanted to know about the staff in the Pinnacle, and thought I should share that. The staff in the regular dining room was excellent!!!!

At each port, we hired a driver to show us the highlights of each port, and that was a great way to see everything. The only port we didn't do that was in Sydney. I wish the cruise line would skip that port because there was not much to it. I would have loved another sea day or to spend 2 days in Halifax. I think the comments I heard from others was the same.

I'm afraid we didn't go to any shows because we became casino rats. The 4 of us love to play cards, and only one of us came home with winnings, but that was OK because we thoroughly enjoyed the casino. The staff was very nice, and every single dealer was nice and pulling for the player. There was also very little smoke in the casino.... a first for a casino visit I've ever had!

I met HAZE from the boards, and loved meeting her and her husband. They are still on the Maasdam, those lucky ducks, as they were doing a back to back. The weather the week we were on was fabulous, but I'm afraid HAZE is not experiencing the same on her return trip to Montreal. HAZE had met LISA63 from the boards and introduced her to me. It really was fun putting a face with a name.

The people I was with had only been on the Oosterdam and never been on an S class ship. They LOVED the size of the Maasdam and the ease of getting around. I had forgotten how easy it was, as well.

All in all, it was a wonderful trip on a wonderful ship. For those of you worried about the Maasdam, as was I, put those worries aside. She is a beautiful ship with a wonderful crew. Thanks to all of you who answered so many questions for me before the trip. I hope I can be helpful as well.

Dee......Welcome back. So happy you had such a great time on "My" Maasdam :) I love that 'dam' ship.

I couldn't agree more about the wonderful crew on her but am sorry you had that episode with the waitress in Pinnacle....(I think I know who you are referring to ;) )

Maasdam really is a wonderful ship and she never disappoints us. We are booked to sail her 'sister' Veendam in January. We've cruised her a number of times in the past but not for several years.

Thanks for posting your great review.

NIce review. Thanks for sharing your trip with us. The Maasdam is still my favorite HAL ship, but we are looking forward to the Volendam on 11/26.

The lobster lunches sounded so great. Made me want to get back to New England soon. I don't like the olive oil on the bread in the Pinnacle, either and always ask immediately to have it taken away and replaced with butter.

Thanks for the review. We are looking forward to our Sept 25th cruise on the Ryndam. We have only been on the Zuiderdam and the Amsterdam. Can't wait to see the difference in the type of ship.

I'm glad you had a great trip, and glad your experience with your server in the Pinnacle didn't ruin your trip (it shouldn't have). But I still don't think that it's acceptable for a server anywhere, whether it be on a cruise or in a restaurant, to tell her customers that a simple request would be an inconvenience.:(

Thanks form posting your review - hope to hear more about the ports and what you did in each of them.

We hav eaten several times in the Pinnacle on Maasdam - most recent was May - and we were served the oil and a separate container with butter without having to ask.

Glad you enjoyed the cruise other than the small problem in the Pinnacle.

We have always found the crew on the Maasdam to be very friendly.

We haven't been on the Maasdam, but have been to Sydney, Nova Scotia on the Rotterdam. We really enjoyed that port and hope to see it again on another Canada-New England cruise.

Well, I just missed it in this port. Please tell me what is there in case I am ever there again and also for others who will be going there. The info on the island provided in the cabin before docking even described it as a depressed area, and I quote "Sydney has been undergoing economic decline for several decades. The local government is attempting to shift the city's failing industrial economy to one based on a diversified mixture of initiatives including tourism."

Maybe I was not expecting it to be too much, and that was the problem. We did not venture out from the town and just walked around and had lunch at a place called Joseph's...I think. It was just OK.

As we were getting off the ship to walk around Sydney, several passengers were getting back on the ship and said, "Don't waste your time!"

I am sure every port is what you make it, so please give some good advice for others to make this a worthwhile port.

Hi Dee :)

It was a pleasure to meet you on board... only wish it could have been for longer.

We also enjoyed Maasdam. This was our first HAL cruise and will certainly not be the last. We are already contemplating a return next summer.

We were in an outside cabin on A-deck and found it to be most comfortable. We had new bedding as well, and the robes were wonderful. And I loved the make-up mirror. We found no fault with the ship whatsoever. She is wonderfully maintained. Service was excellent overall, with just one minor exception which was cleared up quickly and did not recur. Our service in Pinnacle Grill was just fine, but we dined very early, which may make a big difference as there were few other pax there at the time.

The shows were OK -- not great, just OK. I didn't care much for the singing and dancing troupe, and the other acts were pretty generic as well. I would have preferred to hear the Maasdam Orchestra play some more. We did see the shows as our 10-year-old loved them, but we all preferred listening to the bands in the smaller venues.

This was a port-intensive cruise, so we spent mornings and lunches ashore (as did Dee) and spent the afternoons by the pool or in the Lido. Ports were wonderful -- so much to do. There is a grand amount of history in each of the Canadian ports we visited -- Quebec City, Charlottetown, Sydney, and Halifax. Bar Harbor was a nice, quiet town in which to end this hefty itinerary.

In Sydney, we took the ship's tour to Fortress of Louisbourg. It was an incredible recreation of a walled settlement that had existed there in the mid-1700s. The thing about Sydney is that to really enjoy the port, you have to get away from it. :) I heard rave reviews on the Alexander Graham Bell Baddeck tour. Unfortunately, it was overcast that day, so I don't know how much the folks on the Cabot Trail tour got to see.

Oh my -- I had intended this to be a short post in response to Dee's wonderful review. Thanks for sticking with me until the end!

I'll be happy to answer any questions as well.
