View Full Version : Movies under the Stars

I saw this on another thread and thought the topic deserved it's own thread:
"Wish HAL would add the MUTS, the Movies under the Stars. The name is a little misleading as they start the movies around 8:00 and end qround midnight. They had everything from concerts by Elton John, Live from The MET Opera, NCAA basketball games, kids animated movies like Cars, light romances, action films etc."
Any thoughts?

We, personally, would love it. Especially the concerts where you can come and go, maybe stay for your "very favorite song in the whole wide world" and then move on.

We enjoyed MUTS on the Grand Princess. Grabbing a chaise lounge and munching on bags of popcorn. Kind of a neat concept. :)

I would love it, too! But, as Atomica noted on that earlier thread: "I understand though it's so prohibitively expensive to retro-fit the older ships with it that it will only be offered on the newbuilds."
Perhaps on Eurodam's successors?

The kids love it.
Some folks complain that it's a nuisance during the day at the pool ... but there are other pools on Princess.
It's nice for an evening movie but there is no way it could be justified in a retrofit.

If it meant that much to me I'd be booking Princess. But it doesn't. So I'm not.
I don't even go to the ship's movies indoors. Why would I want to sit outside to see one?

Don't know how expensive it would be to retrofit ships. Carnival is doing it on some of their larger ships (Valor had it added during its last drydock).
We were on Caribbean Princess and saw a movie and enjoyed it very much. Deck chair, comfy blankets, popcorn.....

We enjoyed it very much on our Princess cruise.
Actually got to see the SuperBowl '06 on the MUTS! For regular films, they give out plaid blankets and popcorn...very cool. Similar to the old drive in movies!
Except you're on the deck of a ship...not scrunched up in an automobile!

There you go. I don't belive Grand Princess had MUTS originally. It was added after---retrofitted.

If I'm not mistaken, we were one of the first cruises on her that had MUTS.
I like Innlady's comparison to the old Drive In Theaters! (would have LOVED to see an NFL game on it!) :)

That is what was nice about the Caribbean Princess - 4 pools! Noisy (or should I say lively?) in the middle and quiet up front by the spa but the best was the aft pool.

We also enjoyed MUTS on the Grand Princess last Thanksgiving. We saw a couple of movies and watched the NFL Thanksgiving games on it.
A really neat concept.
Disney also have the large video screens which I believe were retrofitted. We saw the Michigan vs Ohio State game. The Disney screens seemed to be a lot brighter and a bit larger than the Princess screens.

Sounds like fun - I used to love going to the drive-in movies with my dad when I was a kid - BUT I recall reading somewhere that the movies were shown not just at night but during the day as well, and that it was noisy.
If HAL were to implement some version of this, I'd hope that they would confine it to evening hours, and figure out some way (wireless headphones?) to make sure that the sound didn't carry into areas outside that occupied by the actual audience for the film. I would have HATED to have to listen to a movie soundtrack or other "entertainment" during those times when DH and I were enjoying a quiet moment reading, dining, or conversing on our balcony during our 20th anniversary cruise.

I enjoyed it but no-I don't need it-and actually I like for each cruiseline to be a little differant-I enjoy cruising all the lines and like a little variety in my crusing life-all the lines have things they are good at and things they are not so good at.
I think HAL's speciality should stay ships smaller then 2000 people. All the ships that have the MUTS carry 3000 PAX or more. I do not want HAL to become that.

That's what is so amazing about the Movies under the Stars.
The sound is confined to the area. If you look at the Princess ships, they have 4 pools, one aft, one forward and two in the middle. The sound doesn't travel to the second middle pool. No way it would go to the balconies below.
It was fun to watch.

This is my personal opinion but if I could, I would get rid of all the MUTS facilities. I don't go to movies on land; I don't watch them on an airplane; I never rent movie DVDs at home. So why should I be stuck with watching them on a ship?

No one is forced to go and watch MUTS. It is just another entertainment option that uses an under utilized part of the ship at night

But you don't have to be stuck with it - there a lots of space on the ship (and upper decks) that you don't hear or see it.

Most of the stars I enjoy have long since departed *LOL*
I think MUTS would be a great thing , haven't had it on any of my cruises so far, but If they were playing something I was interested in, what a great way to enjoy it . Out at sea on a big screen, bag of popcorn, and an adult beverage :)

Actually HAL had similar thoughts many 'moons' ago. As a eight year old child (my first HAL float) the Statendam IV showed "Tom & Jerry" cartoons and a Disney flick over the aft pool (the only one) via screen & 35mm film projector on a '58 holiday cruise.
http://www.worldshipny.com/sjcstat1.jpg
Now, with the current concerns & sentiments expressed by current passengers & posters should we be concerned with the dress code (e.g. sassy formal or casual?), sound pollution & more importantly, the serving of potentialy intoxicating liquors around the underaged? (dare I mention nicotine inhalation?).
May your next cruise be your GREATEST CRUISE!
Bon Voyage & Good Health!

Not only do I not want it for myself, I don't want to be on a ship that has it. Sorry.
If I want movies under the stars, I'll go to the drive-in (yes, we have them and I, too, loved drive-ins in my youth:) ).
But when I cruise, I'm on a ship under the stars and I don't need a movie or anything else that needs to be broadcast from a large screen that totally destroys the whole reason I'm cruising.
Just one more reason I drift slowly away from cruising until we can hopefully afford a cruise line that takes us back to yesteryear.:)

We love Princess and MUTS at night. It was very relaxing to watch a movie in our lounger under the stars with a blanket and popcorn. BUT... during the day it is very loud and cheapens the cruise experience IMO. We could not find lounge chairs on a sea day except those just outiside the pool area where MUTS was playing. Speakers were blasting sound in the areas beside the main pool area. UGH. We hated the noise. I think it should only be run at night.

There's nothing else going on out there at night anyway, so what would it hurt to have MUTS?
On our HAL cruises, after 6:00 or 7:00 PM the lido pool area was almost abandoned. So, would having MUTS really annoy anyone? I believe it should only be in the evenings, not during the day by no means.
Uh oh! I about forgot something very important - Since the lido pool area is a "public area," if it was a formal night, you would have to have on your formal wear to go to the MUTS. Bummer. :(

Never having experienced MUTS (the Regal and Star Princess didn't have that when we were aboard), where is it held? I wonder if there would be enough seating on a HAL ship (especially the R- or S- class ships) around the Lido pool? So would it be on the aft deck? I can't even imagine it, even though I'm sure we'd like to try it sometime. (We're movie nuts.)

I am sorry here -- but there is no way I would want MUTS on a cruise ship that I am on. Different strokes for different folks -- the cruise lines that sell the large ships that are loud and full of activities can have MUTS. It is already there in the market place for those who feel that this is the way they wish to spend their vacation dollars. Viva la difference!
As far as I am concerned I love the quiet evenings, walks on the promenade or top decks under the stars, or sitting out on my private veranda, feeling the breezes and listening only to the sounds of the water and waves. That is a cruise and, to me, a big piece of what a cruise is all about. It is all about these experiences that I cannot have at home.
I do not need to spend large sums of money to only enjoy what I can get for free or very little at home. I cruise for a different experience. I choose HAL because the ships are smaller, elegant, sophisticated and quiet. As the economics of cruising pushes even each HAL new build just a little larger than the last, lets PLEASE not lose what sets HAL apart from the pack by parroting all the features of the other lines.
I fear that only too soon Carnival, RCI and NCL will be able to lose all of their brands except for one because they will all be the same. We currently have different brands in order to appeal to different demographics. I would like to see it kept that way.

Unrelated perhaps.. but on our last cruise the formal night was the same night as the Academy Awards and they broadcast it live in the theater. Iwas fun to be all decked out in tuxedos, sipping champagne and making believe you were actually there. The ship's entertainers formed a papparazzi line on the red carpet at the entrance to the theater. There were cameras and fans and autograph seekers - it was a hoot.

I think so, too...it could be done more tastefully than is done on Princess. Having it on during the day is just too loud...the MUTS, the people in the pool, kiddies running around screaming, etc. But if they dropped down a screen for night time viewing, it would be nice.

100% agree! And to the person who said there's nothing going on up there anyway, that's the beauty of it. There's nothing going on up there.
Can't we from time to time have nothing going on? Do we constantly need to be entertained? Remember when ads for cruising were just 2 people standing by a railing looking out at the sea, big full moon and the stars?
That is cruising. There are loads of places everyone can go to get all the rest of it. I know it's not going to happen, but I'd love to see cruising go back to the days that it appeals to those who love to cruise, love to be on the water, can live without their TVs, their phones, their everyday life.
Leave it all behind and just cruise. Hmmmmmm...........bliss:)

I wrote the original comment regarding MUTS. I do agree that it does not translate as well to all HAL ships, but not all of the Princess ships have MUTS.
On the Caribbean Princess it worked very well. I loved the day time movies, concerts, NCAA basketball games. If I did not care for what was on or wanted peace and quiet I just went aft to the adults only pool, where I saw no children all week!
Being a big sports fan, I loved the watching the Basketball games with 100's of others, the cheering etc makes it so much better.
I actually did not watch anything at night, an early evening movie/game was as late as I watched as there was too much elso going on.
I did see where the Rocky Horror Picture show was on late one night, I walked by and those watching were having a great time.
La Boheme from the Met had the largest crowd and that was at 2:30PM with people sitting in the sun/shade watching. I would not have thought that it would draw that many people.

Absolutely love to have MUTS on HAL. I choose a Princess ship partly based on whether or not it has MUTS. It's a great idea and I applaud Princess for having it and for other lines that introduce it.
As for it being loud and disruptive, in case people haven't noticed these ships are HUGE...there are PLENTY of other places on board if one needs quiet. There is no possible reason why MUTS and quiet cannot peacefully coexist.

From what I have read, MUTS is available on 5/17 Princess ships:
Emerald ( 2007) 3080 pax
Caribbean ( 2004) 3120 pax
Crown (2006) 3120 pax
Grand (1998) 2600 pax

BTW, I noticed and am impressed with your cruising history. I suspect you have a rare perspective, given the number of sails on so many different cruise lines. :)

We've only sailed on one Princess ship, the Sea Princess, which has MUTS. This is one of their "older" ships, so MUTS has been added. Our cruise was very port intensive and when we did have a sea day and were by the pool, the movie or concert being shown was very intrusive. We never wanted to watch a movie "under the stars," as there were more things to do inside, in the evenings. This seems to be the only way for Princess to show movies. HAL has the Wajang Theater and popcorn, too! Why change a good thing!

FWIW, MUTS was one of the main reasons I booked a Princess cruise for later this year--just to see what it was like. I can understand why some people don't want movies playing during the day around the pool, but at night what's the harm in having it at one of the pools (assuming other parts of the deck where one can wander around with no activities)? The more options on board, the better.

Okay, so call me old-fashioned or even boring but I prefer my cruises to be relaxing and my entertainment to be left in the theatre. I cruise to see exciting ports of call and to have good food and a good place to curl up. Everything else is "extras".
I must admit MUTS isn't a selling point to try Princess for me although I don't want to ever go as far as to say I wouldn't go on Princess. The thought of a drive-in on the top deck just isn't enticing and as I recall I never liked the drive-in when I was a kid either.:o

...I was thinking of just a one time event during a particular cruise to be held back by the aft pool. Obvious scheduling would be on, say, the night they do the Lido barbeque followed by the "dancing under the stars" by the Lido pool event. Needless to say, this would probably be only applicable only to the Carib/ S. Pacific / HA/ warm weather itineraries. It's been my observation that the aft pool area is somewhat vacant during the 'rib nights'.
While 'grown-up' folks are enjoying the dancing forward following dinner why couldn't HAL also provide something for the kids & those that fail to grow up (including moi) back by the aft pool? A suggested line up might include , a dozen old Bugs Bunny /Roadrunner cartoons followed by, say, an old Marx Bros. (A Night At The Opera comes to mind), or other oldie family friendly comedy (Flubber?) . Could be a hoot.
A box of popcorn, a libation, an ocean breeze and a star filled sky? Wouldn't get any better than that, no?
Poolside casual, of course.
Bon Voyage & Good Health!

Muts does not sound very appealing since I usually enjoy peace and quite around the pool but I cannot honestly say I would like it or dislike it. I might enjoy a concert but it would have to be a very large ship. Hal ships are too small to handle it. I would vote NO to putting it on any of Hal's existing ships.
As long as the sound was not too loud I could handle being on a ship with it.
Sorry, prescottbob, but I could not handle the BEEP BEEP. Please keep the cartoons in the cabins.

Well, HAL has MITT, "Movies in The theater". I do believe it was you, Hammy, who said that we need to promote diversity among mass-market cruise lines so that people would have a choice.
Thank you sir, for making me sound far more eloquent, than I am.:D
I enjoy the lack of gimicks on HAL which makes it a different kind of cruise experience. I also know that most people on 7-10 day sails like gimicks, else all those big bad ships would not be sailing as full as they do.
I have yet to sail Princess and one of these days I will and when I do, I'll probably get a kick out of MUTS. I cannot quite get my arms around the concept during the day, but think it a neat novilty for the evening sails in warmer climates.

We went on the Caribbean Princess last summer. We were all excited when we boarded and wanted to watch a movie at night. We never got around to it. There were too many other forms of entertainment going on.
During the day it was just an overly loud giant television playing various shorts and not really movies. The pool is jam packed.
The stern adult pool on Caribbean Princess is sweet. Just a great spot.

Ahoy!
...just a one time event during a cruise that coincides with the noise around the Lido (e.g. rib night, ice carving & dancing about) and would occur back by the aft pool (e.g. "HAL Drive-In Funnies") for the young & the 'young at heart'. Are we talking a major problem here?
Scheduling? : Startup at approx. 2000 and ending at 2230 (and once again, it would be limited to a one time only event for selected itineraries).
Logistics? : All HAL ships are capable of providing the 'event' regardless of class.
Interest? : Apparently close to zero on this thread. I suppose art auctions are preferred.
Have a WONDERFUL CRUISE!
Bon Voyage & Good Health!

Oh Bob, It's not that bad.
Here's the breakdown:
56% are in favor
32 % are not in favor
13 are neutral
I actually thought there would be more negatives.
I appreciate that HAL was the first with MUTS, back in the 50's. Who knew? :)

I also appreciate that HAL was first with MUTS in the '50's -- but I do also note that they no longer do it which I would like to believe speaks for the lack of popularity of this concept with the traditional HAL cruiser.
Let the other lines have the MUTS and let HAL save the decks for quiet and relaxation rather than frantic, constant doings!

Aft deck might be great for it.
I disagree -
The Aft Pool is for Adults - and the Midship Pool is for Families and Kids.
MUTS would bring the families and kids to the stern where they don't belong.
(And you couldn't put it in the Midship Lido - the screen would be smashed and have to be replaced every time they closed the Magrodome! ;) )

I am neutral on the topic. I am fond of each cruise line having something unique for as long as it remains unique and profitable, to attract a market segment not served by the competition.
Having said this, each cruise line has one reposnsibility; to hit their numbers. The economies of scale allowed HAL to grow instead of die the way most premium cruise lines did. Those who sail in the majority of cabins, inside/outside and low cat. balconies would not be cruising if it were not for the economies of scale.
The aft pool area is dead ( windy) space, in the evening. It could, in theory, be used to show an evening event/movie without intruding on those who do not like the concept of MUTS. How to pull this off and not disturb the cabins below the aft deck would be the challenge.
HAL will do whatever is necessary to fill their ships and sustain their business. I think this is better than the alternative.

... CONGRATS! We'll be celebrating our 20th wedding anniversary on the Noordam in December! :)
Thanks, NNN. Congrats to you too! I hope you enjoy your anniversary cruise as much as we did ours. (Sorry for the delay in responding - haven't been back to this thread in a few days.)

I think that it would probably not fit with HAL, so I'll keep cruising on both!
I cruise alot solo or with groups and I now prefer the MUTS for solo Caribbean or maybe on any cruise with a lot of sea days. European cruise's that are more port intensive it would be a waste. Eastern Caribbean itin. on the Caribbean Princess we only had 3 ports.
When I cruise with friends I don't think the MUTS would mean as much, unless there was a big event, like the Super Bowl, Oscars etc.
Like I said I like it alot but not enough to cruise Carnival, or to give up HAL.
As of now ( unless something too good to pass up comes along) my next cruise is on the Eurodam in January with 18 friends, no MUTS, no problem.

Actaully 5-there is also a wading pool for the kiddies.

This is my personal opinion but if I could, I would get rid of all the MUTS facilities. I don't go to movies on land; I don't watch them on an airplane; I never rent movie DVDs at home. So why should I be stuck with watching them on a ship?
DON
Well Don I guess you would not care that HAL Westerdam gives you a DVD player and yes we used ours! I enjoy whatever the cruiseline gives me. I enjoyed MUTS but that would not be enough reason for me to just book Princess. The same goes for the DVD palyer on HAL, it was nice but it would take more then that for me to just book HAL.
I will contune to be a cruiseline "hopper"-never will I become a "loyalist" of just one line!

I think it would be fantastic!
