On our Ryndam cruise we will have up to 3 formal nights. DH has his tux, and I bought a long dress for this cruise. Since I always wore cocktail dresses before I never paid too much attention, so is the first night or the second night considered more formal?? If we have the 3rd one it will be on the 4 night repo part of the cruise, so maybe not as formal as the others.

I tried searching but no luck..........

Some people say they think the first formal night is the most formal....some don't agree. Out of dozens and dozens of cruises, it seems to me they are all the same. Wear your dresses in whichever order pleases you. I honestly have never noticed people being more formal one night vs another. (DH and I are always dressed in tux and formalwear on all formal nights.)

I agree. Formal night is formal night. HAL has not differentiated levels of formal (although they've altered their guidelines to include non-formal wear.)

I agree that it the degree to which people dress up does not differ from one formal night to the next. I usually bring one long dress and one more cocktail type dress and decide when I get on the cruise which dress I feel like wearing which night. On cruises with three formal nights, I tend to bring only two formal dresses and wear one two times with different accessories.

Thanks everyone! Men are soooo lucky, tux or suit?? lol! Women have too many choices, and so long it is for the first night.;)

I suspect that some people may have taken more care to dress up on the first formal night when HAL still had the Captain's Welcome Aboard party before dinner. Now that that's a thing of the past there really is no difference from one formal night to another.

With the one possible exception of the night of the Black & White Ball. People still tend to give it an extra "oomph" that night.

We had 3 formal nights on our recent Ryndam voyage (Sea of Cortez, 3/26) and dressed accordingly for all three. However, it seemed a lot of folks thought three was too many and quite a few skipped the middle evening - attendance in the dining room was kinda sparse and the waiters noted that it was because of pax not wanting to "dress up."

Just got off the Ryndam about a week ago and seemed like all three were about the same.

Add us to those who haven't been able to tell a difference in 'formality' among the formal nights - not matter what the itinerary.

I have always thought that the "formal Night Dinner" with the white chair covers, candles on tables seemed to be more formal but that might just be my feeling.:)

I have noticed that on cruises when there are 3 formal nights, people are more dressed for the 2nd and 3rd night.

Have friends sailing on your cruise.

And having sailed quite a few times on the Ryndam -- you will ove the ship and that itinerary.

I would save the long for the 2nd night -- that is what I have done on cruises like that.

Not all ships cover the chairs in the dining room on the last formal night -- been there -- done that -- and know.

I also agree that all formal nights should be equal. However, in my head, the second night was 'more formal' than the first. I also think, as Nonie said, that the last formal night, with the chair covers and candles, has much more 'formal' feel to it.

We were scheduled for four formal nights, but only had 3.

Okay, second night it is. I had totally forgotten about the candles and tablecloths for the second night.

KK are your friends on for the full 12 days? We have a very active roll call going, if they're interested, we do have some fun things planned.

I'm amazed how less and less formal the ladies seem to dress. I have a long dress with 2 different shalls and a cocktail dress. Both are quite dressy. On the cruise I just returned from a few days ago many of the ladies where dressed in outfits on formal nights that I would wear to the office. I seemed very over dressed. I really don't mind feeling that way. I think I end up looking pretty nice and always get several compliments on the way I'm dressed.:)

Actually, our 'chair cover and candles' dinner with the third formal night.
