I generally prefer HAL's program of "Delayed Disembarcation".
After repeated announcements on the PA system and a very entertaining game of "Hide and Seek", several uniformed men take my luggage and personally escort me off the ship...

Yes, but you must get off early - the very first group, before suite pax. You'll get a form in your cabin about 2 days before disembarkation on which you can request an express pass.

Brian, don't even joke about that! Unless that was you delaying my disembarkation from the Westerdam on March 30 in Fort Lauderdale???? :):D
Seriously though.. we docked at 7:30 and nobody was let off the ship until MUCH later than usual. I had express - I have no problem rolling my own luggage off and I don't like leaving it outside my door the night before and having to worry about whether I remembered not to pack my jammies and toothbrush and exactly what I need for my morning routine.. anyway, I digress... and I had a towncar waiting for me so I was anxious to disembark.. luckily I could entertain myself by hanging off my balcony on the dock side and watching the gangway being set up (actually more than one - one a sleeve and a small gangway at dock level).. anyway, I saw the police board with dogs. Then another squad car arrived, and then a man was taken off the ship in handcuffs! He did not look happy. It seemed to take them ages until they loaded him into a police car and drove away and only THEN did they call for us (expedited deboarding card holders) to leave the ship. I heard later that what took so long was exactly what you described - a little game of "hide and seek"...hmmm...

Of course you can get off the ship early by taking your luggage with you as dscribed above. But HAL has this lovely system of allowing you to stay in your cabin until your group is called. This was one of the most impressive parts of my first HAL cruise and I took full advantage of it, even ordering room service breakfast so that I could dawdle.
