View Full Version : Question for Digby...

Not sure, but it sounds like you may have missed the post by tammar, "Digby - God loves you" on this thread - before it was eliminated by the hosts.
I was one of the first responders - for what it's worth. I objected to tammar's statement to you - so did many others...
My question to you - what are you looking for on the HAL boards? You continually find fault and post all the negative...
I'm curious, nothing more or less... I'm certainly not judging you.. we all know there are the mindless threads on HAL - maybe this is our way of bringing a bit of levity to the boards - sometimes they need it, IMO...
Please, if you care to - explain your thoughts and/or position?

He seems to spend a lot of time on the "Oceania" and the "Gay & Lesbian Cruisers" boards and doesn't post anything negative there. Maybe he has something against HAL or people who sail HAL?

That's one angry Bible Thumper!
I've often wondered about Bible thumping. It seems like a silly practice. The sound a Bible makes when you thump it is kinda dull, lifeless ... though if it's hard bound, not leather bound, the thump will hurt your finger a bit more.
Does one thump a Bible to find out if it's ripe, or just because the like that dull "thud" sound that thumping it makes. Inquiring minds want to know ;)

I love HAL! I just had a great trip on the Westerdam. I do have a problem with small minded people who try to force their beliefs on others. At the same time I love that we have the freedom to hold those beliefs, but wish people would keep them to themselves. I also hate to waste time and see room taken up by some of these silly questions/polls that seem to be on the HAL part of CC more than any other. I also think this question could have been handled by email privately.
I'm feeling warm and fuzzy that someone cares enough to track my presence on CC. I regularly read many more of the folders than that person posted. (Some kind of agenda?) My next cruise will be on Oceania. After that, HAL would be high on my list.

Wow ... we can't win for losing, can we? We talk about dress code and tipping and get ripped for being too limited. We go the other direction and talk about a broad range of topics and get ripped for having too many "silly questions/polls."

If you feel a thread isn't appropriate you can notify them by using the triangle alert.
As far as wasting time, you may not be aware that if you hold your cursor over the thread title you can read the jist of the thread without opening it---thereby not spending time in a thread that does not interest you.

I was never "thumped' by a bible, but I was hit with a ruler once in 5th grade. EEk Sister Margaret Mary Hitler I think it was. That made a heck of a thud *LOL*

to this day I always tell people I meet to call me by my first name because when people call me by my surname it reminds me of her catching me doing something wrong. *LOL*
RuthC,
The kids today don't believe that we went through all this. Of course today if they did this, they would be sued and arrested and fired. My daughter thinks I am making up all this stuff. :)

Vicar, in England during the war (WW2)...when I grew up, not only did we have the knuckles rapped with a ruler, we had the cane on our posteriors and a heavy leather strap on our open palms. Talk about corporal punishment, WOW!! we got it. Further more, you had better not tell your mum, or you got more at home for misbehaving in school...jean

My daughter thinks I am making up all this stuff. :)I loved the Nuns. They were all sweethearts compared to the Brothers at CBC. One was a dead chalk shot. He held his chalk with a spring loaded tongs gadget. That guy could plunk a kid in the back row dead center in the forehead. The head Brother's specialty was applying a ping pong paddle while the victim bent over holding his ankles. OUCH!! I always considered the Brothers frustrated priests.
It was more than thirty years ago I had occasion to pick up our daughter at Holy Ghost Elementary during school hours, arriving just as class change occured. As in days of yore they were being marshaled by a Sister. The kids were neatly moving in columns of two, but they were actually talking. Believe me, I was in shock. Liberals had taken control!
These irrelevant reminiscences are for you, Digby. Did you enjoy them? I knew you would!:)

I checked just now and found that CC has a whole section just for "FUN STUFF" relating to cruising. It would seem to me that's where the polls like "What color socks are you wearing when you read CC?" or "Which do you add to your coffee first - the sugar or cream?" should go. Then we could concentrate on actual cruising info on these various specific cruise line areas. Just a thought!

And, for the third or fourth time, I'll ask who is forcing you to read the threads you deem to be un-related to "actual cruising info on these various specific cruise line areas"??
Perhaps you need a lesson on how to selectively read threads? How to subscribe to a thread?
Or, is it that you have difficulty intrerpreting the titles of threads - is English not your first language? Are you 'clue challenged'?
Please try to help us understand your needs/problems and them we can help you to deal with the situation.

Thanks for your thought! I have two questions:
1. What if the poll and/or thread in question is specifically oriented toward finding out such trivia from just HAL passengers? For instance, the "How Old Are You?" poll was designed to find out if the often-spread myth about the age of HAL mariners is actually reflected by those who post on this board. Do we have your leave to keep posting such trivial questions on this board if they have such specificity in inquiry.
2. Can you provide a relative taxonomy by which we can determine if our threads are going to meet your expectations for what is appropriate for this board rather than the "FUN STUFF" board? That would be helpful to us so that we can avoid raising your ire at our irrelevance.
:)
Am I being absurd? Sure ... and for a purpose.

Does anyone read every single thread? I don't. If someone posts something about a cruise to Athens, I may not be interested at the time but I will read every posting from someone on board regardless of what ship and itinerary.
It doesn't bother me in the least to skip over some of the threads.

Does anyone read every single thread?....I do. But then I'm the thorough type. (Maybe some other word is more precise. ;) ) Right now I'm still back on p.16, working my way to the current threads.
But that's not to say that Digby---or anyone else---has to read every post of every thread. As I posted earlier, it's easy enough to determine what the thread is about and skip what doesn't interest.

What is the big deal about us all having a little fun here?
I mean this is a cruise board, cruises are supposed to be fun right? If they weren't we sure are wasteing a lot of time here and a hell of a lot of money on the cruises we take. We are a group of people all here to talk about a fun subject.
A lot of us have cruises booked in the near future and as the time comes, we get a little silly and we like to share it. Thats fun :)
Sometimes we get a little OT and start teaseing eachother (not flamming or making cruel remarks , just cutting up and giving eachother a chuckle)
If this was a board for discussing some serious, life and death , national security related topic, then yes the sillness would be inappropriate.
But we all come here , yes to learn and gather and relay cruiseing info, but also to meet nice people and enjoy ourselves.
I personaly do not read every thread. If I see a topic that doesn't interest me , I simply don't read it. But God Bless the people who start the thread and want to reply to it.
As long as no one is being personally attacked or belittled. whats the big deal?

It's just something to gripe about. Since we're not pounding on Dress Codes, Tipping, or other "hot topic" issues, those who just like to whine and complain about others who are different from them don't have anything specific to gripe about, so they pick on this issue. I've seen it happen before, and I expect to see it happen again.
Next month we'll be discussing Dress Codes again and those griping about our posting trivia threads now will then complain that we're obsessing and being too serious and judgmental.
As I said earlier, we can't win for losing with some people; for them, we'll always be wrong.

If someone here did personally attack or insult you than that is wrong and I am sorry that happened. In a case like that I would bring it to the attention of a host as we are instructed to do.
But in the matter of a silly or just for fun post or poll, if you don't care for that post or do not wish to participate in the poll , then just ignore it.

I just want to say that I am delighted to have discovered this website!! I have found this (website) to be a plethera of information for my first upcoming cruise on the Zuiderdam....and am extremely grateful for all of the valuable information that others have given to make my cruise the most memorable vacation possible!! I will say that although I do not read every single thread I have noticed that some people seem to be predisposed to expressing negativity. Thankfully I am intelligent enough to notice the difference between actual impropriety and legitimate complaints. I do want to say as well that the humor here is just about the best that I've ever encountered. I look forward to reading what everyone's input is to the different threads everyday . There seems to be far more of them on the HAL part of CC than other boards for some reason.

man - why is everyone picking on Digby ?????
I guess I have been away too long and not upset enough folks lately - :D LOL
Seriously, having been in Digby's shoes - I am not sure why folks are upset at him/her. Everyone is entitled to their opinion - and no one will agree with everyone. Shoot - many folks believed I had a negative view of HAL - but my review from my recent Zuiderdam cruise I think dispelled that. I certainly am not like some folks here who see HAL only thru rose colored glasses and find little wrong with them - I like to think I am pretty objective and sometimes that means criticizing HAL. If that's what Digby has done (and I honestly do not know since I haven't been around much lately) , I would simply ask that you step back and consider that he/she might have an alternate viewpoint that deserves some consideration.
Thanks
