Venice - transport to train station?

Hi all! Getting really excited to take a cruise with friends May 20! It's only our third cruise in 17 years of marriage, and first European. Our party of four disembark the Zuiderdam in Venice on Jun1. We need to get from the pier to the train station. HAL arranges transfers to the a/p, but had no advice for us to get to the train station. I posted a thread on this topic on tripadvisor first, not knowing about cruise critic. This is an awesome site! :D
I have learned from browsing the forums that a water taxi will be needed. :confused: Our questions are: how far is water taxi/bus from ship? Can reservations for water taxi/bus be made in advance? Which train station is closest to port? Mestre or Santa Lucia? Both go to Milan, which is where we are headed for catching our flight home on Jun2. We would greatly appreciate any ideas or advice. Thanks!
