View Full Version : Do You Drink The Water ?

 First time cruiser question again: I only drink bottled water when I travel in the U.S. Not fussy about brand (cheap is fine) ... but I don't like taking a chance drinking "unknown" water. Is bottled spring water easy to get on the ship (Maasdam Dec. 22 Holiday Cruise) ... or do I need to pack a suitcase full? I am afraid I don't know anything about the drinking water on a cruise. (Thanks to all who responded to my question about lounge chairs on HMC - praying for all in Florida and at sea!)

Bottled water is readilly availabe---for a price. There will even be a bottle in your cabin.
But do consider drinking the water HAL delivers. That's what will be served at the dining table. It tastes fine---in a manner of speaking. Actually, it has no taste at all! (this is a good thing in water.) And it's quite pure; at least as pure as most bottled waters!

We packed a case of bottled water and split it up between our four suitcases. It was much cheaper than buying onboard ($5.97 for a case at Walmart).

The bottled water on the ship is going to be at least $3.50 per bottle. The ships water is distilled or reverse osmosis and is very good.

Ship's water is probably more pure, better quality than whatever mystery brand of bottled you may buy. I am sure you have seen the 'quality control' tests done on bottled water and the results were very disturbing.....as in rip off. Most of the taps in most houses provide better quality, more pure water and for sure, the ships do.

The ship's standard water supply (what you get in the dining room and Lido) is excellent. VERY pure ... no taste, and utterly clear. The only time we open the bottled water in the cabin is for convenience purposes. Last cruise we used one bottle, then re-filled it in the Lido every day. :)

Hubby and I both took one bottle of water one the plaine with us and refilled it several times a day on the ship, we read about the reverse osmosis and filteration system they are required to have by law, they water is more pure than any bottled water, even the water they use to flush the toilets is purer than bottled water! And no I did not refill the bottles in the toilet LOL, we we found no difference between the sink water in our cabin and the lido water. Because we were not use to the humidity, we drank lots of water! Neither one of us ever got sick either :)

I have problems with drinking water in some parts of the country BUT I don't have any problems with the water on the ships. We consume a lot of water when we get down in the heat and humidity.

We also take a few bottles of water with us...the kind that fit in my purse...and refill them on the ship to drink during the day. The ship's water is perfectly fine.

The water on board is steam distilled (from sea water) - MUCH purer than most of what you'll find in the store. I've had problems with water in different parts of the county - NEVER on board (20+ years). I wouldn't bother taking water to consume on the ship. In ports is a different matter, but I'd just take a bottle, filled up with ships water, ashore.

The water on the ship is fine to drink, more than fine, as everyone has assured you. I would not, however, drink the water in port unless it was bottled.

That is so true. Many bottled waters are just bottles from local public water, and are not from springs or pure water sourses. The great thing about bottled water is being able to get a nice drink when you want it and not having to search out a water fountain, which are becoming fewer and fewer just like pay phones.

I know the Noordam was selling 2 different sizes of Evian right before you exited the ship.

We always pack a sports top bottle (24 oz.) - one for each person and label it and just refill it in our rooms each day.

Apparently some of you missed the Bottled Water segment on 60 Minutes several months ago.. Basically, most bottled water is only filtered to remove the larger solids and run through a charcoal filter to help remove any odors.. I've drank the waters from 13 third world countries and most had better and purer water coming out of their taps than we do...Bombero

Generally speaking I drink bottled water (spring water, not filtered tap water) on land, but on the ship I drink the ship's water... Which is probably the cleanest water that you can possibly drink... Better than surgical quality.

Generally we buy a few bottles of bottled water, and then refill them with the ship's water (washing them with hot water in between, of course). This works very well and you can get as much free ice-water on the ship as you want.

We drink the water on board all the time. It is fine. As other have said, the water on the ship is probably better than the water we drink at home.

I drink the ship's water, and have not had a problem.

My wife, on the other hand, has been told by two different ship's doctors not to drink the water onboard, as it apparently upsets her "delicate" stomach - hnece, she drinks only bottled water while on board.

I agree with everyone who posted on drinking the ships water. I'm a daily bottle water drinker and find the ships water to be even better than what I normally purchase.

OK - maybe HAL is different, but on most ships the water used in the toilets is salt water. It was a trivia question on my last cruise.

I am pretty particular about my drinking water and only drink bottled water, as NJ water is not good. However, I must admit that while on the ship I do consume their water, in fairly large quantities I might add. It is good and I have never had any ill effects from it. I bring bottled water with me on the islands, just to be cautious, but drink freely on the ship.

As all have posted...the water on HAL is excellent. I drink a lot of it! It really could not be purer. Do not drink the water given to you on any airplane! When flying you must only drink bottled.

Buy a sports type bottle and re-fill it. Cheaper and just as good. As above in the Lido or your rooms tap.

The Travel channel a few months back had a cruise line story and they went into the explanation of the purety of water onboard cruise ships. As you can read from the other folks you will have no problem with the water as it is more pure than anything around. Have fun.

I have always drink the water on cruise ships. Never a problem. Off the ship I'll drink bottled water if I am certain countries like Mexico.

I found some collapsable water bottles at Office Max. I was thinking when ashore, as I'm emptying the bottles, I'll be filling up the tote bag with all of my treasures. I think it's a good trade off.

The only problem with shipboard water is that some people may find it "too pure" in the sense that it is very low in minerals compared to the water that they usually drink. This sometimes causes irregularity (polite term). If you have that problem, including some bottled water like Evian in your diet will help.

I buy bottled water to drink on land. However, I have NEVER had a problem with ship water and I drink it all the time. The ship takes in ocean water and purifies it. By the time it goes through the process, all the salt is also gone.

We have already been on 13 HAL cruises and have 3 more planned. We always drink the water and haven't gotten sick yet. I think there water is great. Penny

I think the water on the ship is as safe and good as anything you pay for. I cannot imagine why anyone would not drink it. I cannot drink tap water in Florida, but ships water is awesome!

It's interesting that many people will drink bottled water because they think it is of a higher quality than tap water. Actually bottled water doesn't have to meet near as high standards as municipal water supplies. The water on newer ships is uaually distilled or purified thru the reverse osmosis process which is quite safe. I have taken a travel size Brita filter to improve the taste on some ships. Some of the older ships would replenish their fresh water from the islands.

Any lack of taste can be cured by adding sufficeint amounts of scotch.

One of our daughters buys something called "Liquid Colloidal Trace Minerals" which she adds to her "bottled" water for the reasons mentioned above. It can be purchashed at most health stores.

:D We just drink the water on the ships!! Never a problem! :D

Happy Sailing! OCruisers :)

Oh, what great entrepreneurship! Filter out the minerals from tap water, bottle the water and the minerals then sell both to consumers who put them back together again. Only in America...
