A pal just returned from a S.E. Asian cruise on another line...
...when he called to announce his return, he was just giddy: He had fallen in love with someone aboard ship.
(Awwww....):)
I though this was a funny coincidence since my BF is someone I had met a couple of years ago on a cruise too. (No, not Scotty);)

Years ago I met someone in the baggage claim area of the Miami airport. I was waiting to transfer to an NCL ship, he was on a Carnival ship. We made arrangements to meet in St. Thomas as our ships were both in port on the same day. Met again in San Juan. Very romantic. He was from San Diego and I lived in Austin, TX. We had a long distance relationship for about 2 years.

I met my beau on an aircraft as he walked up the aisle past my seat as I was finishing breakfast.. Fortunately he turned and caught my eye as he went past, as it was the most wonderful moment I think i will ever remember. We love talking about it to this day. Lucky me!!!:D :D :D

Bob and I were just married in April. We met on a crossing on the Prinsendam in May 2005. We lived in two different states and had a long distance relationship................much of it was spent crusing together, however. Best thing that ever happened to me.
And we'll keep on cruising!

OH YES!!!!
We met on the Oosterdam in 2005! I first laid eyes on him in the Neptune Lounge on embarkation day...
I think we have everyone beat as far as long distance romance.. 6000 miles to be exact.. so if you do the math you know we don't live on the same continent. We travel a lot though and manage to be together quite a bit.
We'll be on Noordam together in 26 days for I think this makes our 7th cruise together... and we're thinking of maaaayyyyybeeeee a shipboard wedding sometime in our future.....
And also...
Last summer on Noordam, we were waiting for the midships elevators, and as usual had split up - he stood by the inner elevators and I stood by the glass... (you never know which will finally arrive and we must have been in some kind of hurry...:o) Anyway, the glass elevator arrived, and I beckoned - "come over here"... the door of the elevator opened and inside, I'm not making this up, there was a man standing holding out a little box with a diamond ring to a woman. While I was registering this in my brain, I stepped into the elevator and held the door for my SO... and the man said "do you mind?". I said "no..." and he said "I mean - do you mind NOT getting on this elevator! I'm proposing here!" And he was serious. I let the elevator door close just as my SO took in the scene. We both burst out laughing and wondered why in the heck someone would propose in the elevator!!! The next day we actually met the couple, and they are absolutely lovely people, have since married, and are deliriously happy. And here's the really cool part: The proposal was on day 5 of the cruise. They MET THE FIRST DAY OF THAT CRUISE!!!
HAL ships are definitely "Love Boats" ... absolutely, without a doubt!

A few years after my mother died back in the 70s my father went on two HAL cruises and returned from the second one with a new fiance. The were married a few months later, so I was best man at my father's wedding. A couple of my siblings disapproved of her, but she was good for him - even got him playing golf again after not playing for at least 20 years.

No new romances, but DH and I have certainly rekindled ours every cruise.
So cruise ships are Love Boats in a different way for committed couples;)

These are wonderful stories. Thanks for sharing. I wonder how many married couples fall back in love on their cruise??! Remember all the things that made them love their spouse in the first place before 'life got in the way' of their romance.

Has anyone else here met someone special aboard ship?Never met the "love of my life," probably because I haven't been looking for them onboard a cruise ship.
But I've met some wonderful people, a few of whom I today call very, very good friends.

On our recent cruise DW and I stopped in the disco late on our second night to have a drink and listen to some music before turning in. It was very full at all. At the bar on on side were two very pretty girls (early 20s) sitting together. On the side we were sitting at were two young guys about the same age. We started talking to them and they seemed like nice fellas.
After 45 minutes of this, my wife says to the guys "Whats wrong with you fellas ? You are two good loking guys and there are two beautiful girls sitting over there all by themselves. Why don't you go over and ask to buy them a drink or ask them to dance or something?"
The guys admitted they thought they were cute, but seemed a little shy.
My wife said what could happen? You ask them and they say "No thanks" well it happens ,move on , other fish in the sea.
But if they say yes , hey ya never know. :)
Sure enough the guys went over there and started talking. It must have went well because as we were leaveing the disco, the 4 of them went onto the dance floor.
The next day, we are in Bermuda and one of the couples is on the ferry with us to Hamilton. They seem very happy and he has his arm around her.
I asked the fella what about his friend and the other girl. He said "Long night, long story.....*LOL* They are still sleping , we'll meet up with them at dinner.
With that , my wife Yenta the Matchmaker , nudges me and says "See, ya don't think I know what I am talking about do you...look, look:)"

On three different cruises, I had ship board romances. All three relationships lasted beyond the cruise. I wish I could report one of them was the love of my life, but none worked out that way. One remains a dear and cherished friend.
The truly *odd* thing: all three of them were Canadian citizens, like me. Not just Canadians, but from my own province, and living within 200 miles of me. None of those cruises catered to Canadians - quite the contrary.

I've been on HAL three times with no romance (although the captain on our last cruise was quite the cutie, and about my age--40s), but on a cruise a few weeks ago on another line, I met a great guy and we are keeping in touch. We are several thousand miles apart but you never know what might happen, and nothing will happen if you don't try! (Tips on long-distance relationships welcome!)
So fingers crossed for me, please! :)

Valerie--
There's still time!
I certainly wasn't looking either - I was on the Oosterdam RSVP charter to Alaska and was invited with friends to visit the Bridge. When I entered, Capt Van Donsellar introduced us to his bridge staff including a very tall, handsome blue-eyed guy - but I paid him no mind at all since I was there at the invitation of the Captain...
...a few months later, I was chatting online and I saw an interesting face/profile. We chatted briefly (I learned that he was a part-time HAL bridge officer) but he had to go meet friends for dinner.
Several months later - over a year after that cruise - He found me online again and we chatted and spoke on the phone every day for a couple weeks. When he mentioned the charter cruise on Oosterdam it suddenly hit me: I had met him before on the bridge!
After talking for another year, Jeph and I finally met in Seattle this past Xmas - our "First Date" :)
(While it's not a "Shipboard Romance" - it's close enough for me...)

Hey BeagleOne: thanks so much for the encouragement. I could possibly use BeagleTwo as a user name since the only man in my life right now is a chubby Beagle, who goes by the name of "Hey Dog" and honestly snores just as loudly as my late husband used to:D . He is honestly a sweetheart, again like my late husband was:) .

Gosh! What great stories. Thank you all for sharing. I've been on three cruises and nothing yet. Maybe I'm not out there enough, but I'd love to find Mr. Right, Mr. Right Now if you know what I mean. But at my age, I'm not too optomistic but that's ok. I'm enjoying my life and if someone comes into my life that will be great and if not, that's ok too. I've had my share of great romances.

Does it count that my DH fell in love with cruising on HAL and I got to enjoy many romantic evenings with him, dancing in the Ocean Bar and strolling on the deck in the moonlight. On land or sea he was the love of my life and I was one very cherished wife.
Of course I had to nag for two years before he would even consider setting foot on a cruise ship, but he forgave me.:)

David , Valerie and anyone feeling the same way.
I am living proof that when you are least expecting it, and not even looking for it, it will hit you right between the eyes.
After my divorce, The LAST thing I wanted was a serious relationship (and by serious relationship I mean a second date *LOL)
I worked in a place that pretty much guarunteed me more "Miss Right Nows" (to paraphrase NorthPhoenixguy:)) to last me a lifetime.
I was NEVER getting married again, I was never putting a ball and chain around my ankle again *LOL*
Then my best friends wife (a girl I love like a sister, but what a pain in my butt :) wears me down with her nagging and I agree to a blind date with a friend of hers.
We agree that I will meet her at a bar near her work that she goes to for happy hour with her friends and go out from there.
I walk in and there is sitting the the love of my life. :)
Of course God has always had a weird sense of humor with me. And my date that night was the girl she was sitting with *LOL*
But eventually I ended up with the "love of my life " girl. And life has been pretty interesting ever since.

Hearing about you and your DH and Valerie and hers reminds me of my Mom and Dad (he's gone now too). People today say its corny and mushy , but they were crazy about eachother .
It used to embarress the heck out me when they did it at the time, but being older and looking back, watching them on a dance floor (They were awesome dancers) is such a great memory. :)

Not a romance, but I did get to know a single cruise director on an American Hawaii cruise while I was single.
Then I went on an RCI cruise with a boyfriend. Upon boarding the ship I heard someone say over the heads of those in front of us, "I know you!" It was this same CD now on a different line and on the entertainment staff. He caught me later when I was alone and asked about the guy I was with when I told him it was my boyfriend he said, "I hate when that happens!"
Then what do you know, on my honeymoon later that year, on RCI again, I am sitting in the show lounge before the show. My husband had just left to get my sweater, and out pops the same guy, now a CD. This time I had to tell him I was married and on my honeymoon.
My husband was beginning to wonder!!!!

Long before I ever gave a thought to taking a cruise I met a girl from England who was living here as an au pair for a family.
We saw eachother on an off and eventually she went back to England (her term or contract or whatever as an au pair was up).
Long before the advent of E mail, we wrote and called eachother a few times, but when you are that young eventually the long distance thing becomes a drag and we went our separate ways.
Last I heard she was putting in applications for jobs and one was to Cunard for I assume some type of position (Who remembers after all these years.
I often think of the employee discounts I missed out on *LOL*

I met a crew member while on a HAL cruise last year. We never spoke more than offical business the entire cruise but the last night I gave him my business card and he sent me an e-mail. We started an e-mail friendship that later turned to more. I'm lucky that we were able to see each frequently either on-board or in his homeport. I have very few expectations of a future but I'm have a great time anyway.

I have a friend that had an affair with the Maitre d on a Cunard ship many years ago. They saw each other whenever she went on the ship. He even came to see her on vacation one year.
She showed me a picture of him, and he was a dreamy British guy. :D
She found out later that he was married, so that didn't go anywhere.

On my second cruise in 1991, I met and got friendly with one of the bartenders in the Observatory Lounge. Kind of like the Crows Nest.
New York to Bermuda on a NCL ship, the Westward. We had a very fun week, kept in touch and 8 months later.....Ta Daaaaa..... we got married.
Very happily married and falling deeper in love all the time. 16 years (so far) of wedded bliss.
I wasn't expecting or looking for love but some how love found me.

Kathy, that's fabulous! What a great story!
Sorry, Babyher, can't give too many details, but I just figured no guts, no glory, and two nights later plunked myself down next to him when he was sitting alone in the lounge watching the show (the other times I'd seen him he was with other members of his party). I think he came into the lounge after me, saw me standing there, and put himself where I would see him since he was too shy to walk right up to me. So technically I guess I "made the first move" but he put himself right in my path.
Kinda like a cute speed bump...

Thanks for asking, Babyher. Doctor said "No" to Europe and Eurodam but Yes to our b-to-b's on Maasdam in August. He thought Europe too soon/too rigorous. Long transatlantic flight; tiring tours etc
Maasdam we board 30 minutes from home and sail Boston-Montreal-Boston and furthest we'd be from home is Montreal.
I'm very grateful to be so well and healthy now. The disappointment really is about the people we won't see/meet on the Inaugural. (DH had me book Eurodam in March b-to-b as 'make up'. He knew I was disappointed. Is he a keeper??? :) ).

You go girl !! ;) :D

Valerie-
You are such a class act that any man would be lucky to have you. :D I do hope that one day you would be one of those onboard stories.....he would be a very lucky man indeed!;) :D
Oh Sher:
You are too kind (and by the way, I love you too:D ). I am in the midst of rearranging cruises right now and am fairly sure that I will be onboard the "Mighty O" next February 14th.

What a great thread!! I have enjoyed reading about the romances and almost-romances :D . Though I have no romance to report (drat the bad luck) I have fallen in deep like with 2 couples and 1 piano player LOL. On my 2nd cruise I met a lovely couple from Florida a tad younger than me but the life of the party. They included me, never made me feel like a fifth wheel and we keep in touch with each other still.
On my 3rd cruise I met a wonderful couple in their mid-80s who lived summers in Genoa, Italy and winters in Ft. Lauderdale. Instead of flying and dealing with all that hassle they commuted by trans atlantics. They adopted me and we spent a great deal of time together during the 17 days. We are at the annual Christmas card stage of communication.
And on my last cruise, I truly enjoyed meeting and listening to Kory Simon, the piano man. What a delightful young man. We chatted some when we would see each other on the ship and I commended his parents (who could be my children) for his upbringing.
Thanks again for starting this thread.

Not a shipboard romance, but we do try to cruise for our anniversary every year. Next year, we will celebrate our 10th aboard the Westerdam in April 2009. Being on board somehow just makes our anniversaries more special, champagne on the balcony, watch the waves go by etc.:)

the "travel thingie" is what is more and more dictating my cruises. I am currently booked on a cruise from Rio to San Diego next May. Ed and I did this cruise, although from San Diego to Rio, several years ago and as much as this was almost my favorite cruise that trip home from Rio was a true "killer" and ruined my happy memories of the cruise. That's an awful long flight. Sooooo, I'm about to cancel that booking and instead book the Ryndam holiday cruise and then more than likely the Yummer cruise and then I'll have to stay home all year saving my pennies and poring over HAL brochures looking for another cruise, some time in 2010. (maybe Yummer part trois?;)).
I just love those roundtrip San Diego cruises. As you pointed out, I have such a loooooong way to travel: I'm guessing about 20 minutes from front door to pier (and vice versa). I live just a couple of miles east of MCAS Miramar.

I know what you mean. Our last cruise was the first trip we have taken in a while where we didn't have to fly. We left out of NYC (an hour and a half from home) It was wonderful :)
DW would love to go to hawaii again. She did a land based trip there way before she met me. I told her I would only go there on a cruise. A) because its a cruise :) B) because I could not sit through a flight that long. I just get too antsy *LOL*.
I would also love to go to Austrailia , but for that flight, they would have to knock me out and send me as freight *LOL*

Okay, that settles it: I have to e-mail my TA (who is a real sweetheart) regarding the Ryndam's Holiday cruise and I'll just tell her "book me on the O'Dam for the Yummer Reunion Cruise.
I would love to get the same cabin I had this year. Once I figured out the lay of the land (or whatever one would call it on a cruiseship) I discovered that if I took the glass elevator on the starboard side to Main Deck and turned right then my cabin was the fourth one up the passageway. Of course the door decorations helped also;) .

I'm with you in that I just get too antsy on an airplane and I'm also one of those people that just can't sleep on a 'plane, no matter how exhausted I am. Although HAL upgraded me to Business Class on last year's segment of the GWV because I booked so early. So I flew home from Hong Kong in Business Class and believe me that's the only way to travel long distances. I had no problem whatsoever sleeping since my seat reclined all the way back to make a single-bed - oh, and the copious pouring of fine Chardonnays helped the process too;) .
I hope that one day, in the not too distant future, you will get to visit Australia (and as long as you are that far from home I can highly, highly recommend New Zealand - what a gem of a country that is: incredibly beautiful and with the nicest, kindest people imaginable). If I were you - and this will take time: I would fly to the west coast, spend a day or so and then fly on to Hawaii, spend a day or so and then get on a flight for Australia/New Zealand and just enjoy the heck out of those two wonderful countries and their incredibly kind and friendly people (and here's a secret: they actually like Americans - now that's not something you run into every day:D ).
I know that's probably just a dream right now but it could happen and you could have the time of your life. Hey, buy a lottery ticket (your chance is as good as anyone else's) or start a secret savings account. The one thing that I can promise you is that you will love both Australia and New Zealand they are both gorgeous countries and their inhabitants are truly some of the nicest, friendliest and kindest people on earth.

But the real question is: Does Val know her port from her starboard after having consumed one or more Wang Wang's in Oosterdam's Crow's Nest?;)
Great news Val, looking forward to meeting you on next year's Oosterdam Valentine's cruise!:)

That does sound like a plan.
The Austrailia trip is definately on the "to do" list once DW and I retire and the kids leave the nest (God willing) :)
Have seen so many shows and pics of Oz and NZ and it does look so beautiful . They do seem like warm and fun loving people.

I just came across this thread and must post.
Two years ago on my third cruise, I met the only single guy on the ship - and no, I was not looking to hook up, I just wanted to dance. Six months later he moved across the country to be with me, six months after that we got married on a Caribbean beach barefoot at sunset on the exact day we met. We just celebrated our one-year anniversary and took our first cruise together as a couple.
And that's my short version of the story. We had a great time telling everybody on our recent cruise - one reason I liked AWD, we sat with new people (aka "victims") each night at dinner.
