DH and I have a guaranteed cabin and was wondering what to do about the luggage tags if we still haven't been assigned a cabin when we leave home for our cruise. I know to leave the cabin # area blank but do we assume that the luggage porters have a listing of cabins and add the number at that point? Thank you for your feedback.

When you arrive at the pier there will be someone at the gate to check you in. They will have a manifest with your cabin # and you just add it to your tags and off you go.

If you don't have a cabin #, make certain that all luggage tags are completely filled out w/ First & Last Names, etc.
When we were aboard Noordam last year, someone with my last name had her luggage misdirected to my stateroom - the only thing on the tag was the last name. I thought it was Scotty's and he thought it was mine so we both ignored it and didn't realize we had an extra suitcase in our suite until the end of the cruise!

You can also put TBA (to be assigned) for the room number and it will have to be looked up on the manifest - just make sure to put full names clearly printed on the tags. Sometimes when you arrive, the porters are right there and may get your luggage before you can find out your room #. According the HAL, every bag is checked against the manifest to assure the correct room # (hotel manager told us this!) - yeah right! We had our cabin moved and didn't know it until check in. Our luggage was labeled for the other cabin and we didn't get it until about an hour before dinner. Don't panic - they assure us that no bags are left behind!

Which pieces are supposed to have luggage tags? Just the checked-on luggage (big pieces) or all our carry-ons as well?
We just got our documents and they came with two luggage tags per person. That's more than enough if it's just for our suitcases, but not nearly enough if we're supposed to label every carryon, backpack, medical device, purse, briefcase, etc.

Only the pieces you are giving to the porters need luggage tags. You do not need tags for the pieces you are carrying on.

Upon check-in, I was upgraded from an E category to a VA (!) but my suitcase apparently went to the old cabin. When I told my cabin steward (just before dinner) that I suspected it had been misdirected, he threw up his hands and scolded me for not telling him sooner. He got my suitcase for me 10 minutes later. Something to consider if you are moved at the last minute.

When we checked in and found out cabin assignment, the check-in clerk told us to tell the front desk that our luggage was mislabeled when we got onboard - we did. No luggage before sailing. We went down again, and they said they'd pass it on. No luggage before our Meet and Greet. The hotel manager attended and I asked him about it. He said he'd take care of it and gave us his cell number. About 7PM, we got a knock on the door and our luggage arrived and the attendant said the HM told him to find out where it was! We called the HM back and thanked him. We had told the front desk we would accompany the person to the old room and take the luggage ourselves, but they wouldn't do that. I know they're extremely busy on embarkation day but this was a no brainer!
