View Full Version : Temperature on the HAL Amsterdam

DW and I will be cruising Alaska on the HAL Amsterdam during the last week of May 2008.

1. Can the temperature in the Staterooms be adjusted to 72 degrees?

2. What is the temperature in the main dining room, buffet room and show room? Do we need to layer clothing or bring warm jackets on non-formal nights? I ask because some resturants we frequent at home are fairly chilly and the temperature seems to be set for the moving worker's comfort rather than the seated guest's comfort.

Thanks,

(Posted this question in the Alaska board first but received suggestion to post it in the HAL board. Sorry for the double post.)

DW and I usually find the HAL dining rooms and show lounges too chilly for us. (The Lido is not a problem.) We have always taken Early dining, and believe that they often crank the a/c colder at the start in anticipation of many bodies and much activity warming the room up as the evening goes on.

However: on the Amsterdam cruise we just ended Sunday (11th) this was NOT the case! Both the d.r. and show lounge were quite comfortable for us. I don't know if this was because of the very warm outdoor temps in Colombia/Panama/Costa Rica/Mexico or not!

I can't tell you how cool the rooms can go, but we kept ours around the mid-70's.

I believe the temp in the stateroom can be adjusted up that high if you want - it is usually harder to get the room cool enough in really hot areas.
We cruised in the Aleutians where it was pretty cold and were able to adjust the temp up to our comfort level.

We found the temperatures in the dining room and Lido to be ok but always took a wrap to the show lounge as it tended to be cold. the Crow's nest was very hot at times. DH wore a sweater everywhere as he feels the cold.

Kind of a mish-mash of temperatures come to think of it - the one constant was the library/computer room - always comfortable there.

I am often too warm in the dining room.

Chances are most will feel too warm or cold and one person finds it just right. No need to layer indoors. Bring a sweater or jacket just in case.

jtl513, Juanita462 and hammybee:

Thanks much for your replies. My DW has been stressing out on what to pack since we will only be bringing one suitcase each due to Delta Airlines starting to charge for the second bag effective May 5th. Since we're crusing Alaska, she keeps asking me how cold it will be in the various venues aboard the ship. We're from Hawaii so we're not used to the cold. I too am still deciding on what to pack though I'm not as stressed out as she is ..;) .

Thanks again,

...we will only be bringing one suitcase each due to Delta Airlines starting to charge for the second bag effective May 5th.Assuming your flights will be within the U.S., you can check one more bag on Delta for only $25 (http://www.delta.com/traveling_checkin/baggage/baggage_allowance/excess_baggage/index.jsp). Go for it and pack what you want!

As a poster said to me in another thread when I commented about the $25.00 charge, paraphrasing:
"Not gonna bring that second bag home with you?"

That $25 fee is each way ... so the true fee per person on a roundtrip is $50 for that second checked bag unless, of course, you ditch the second bag before returning home.
