Opps I meant Olfactory......
I just read this in the international news. I guess it has been an ongoing crisis that could make a day trip through Naples miserable....
"Residents of Naples, fed up with the stench from months of uncollected rubbish, on Sunday used the waste to barricade streets in protest at the long-running crisis." The article goes on to say that tempers have flared as the summer heat makes the stench unbearable.
I know many of HAL's itineraries are headed to Naples and if you have a sensitive nose, it's something to definitely consider.

Reminds me of Piraeus (Athens) one time when a sanitation strike had been ongoing for several weeks and trash was literally everywhere, including piled up in mounds several stories high. Also hot weather and NOT very fragrant.

What a shame. We had some wonderful visits to Napoli but garbage piled in the street does not sound very pleasant.

I know it could make a visit less that perfect which is why I wanted folks to know of the problem. That said, Naples remains on of the most beautiful Port areas I have been to, so incredibly scenic.

Naples is certainly NOT as interesting a port as Venice.
Highly recommend you book a cruise or land tour to Venice. There is no comparison between Naples and Venice.

Naples is the 'gateway' for tours to Sorrento, Capri, Amalfi Drive......
Certainly Venice is entirely different as is Rome, Florence and Milan etc.

It took a few posts for me to realize you were talking about Italy and not Florida. I was thinking no way would the residents of Naples put up with something like this and HAL is done with FLL for the season.....
Sorry for the interruption.;)

I understand Hammy wears some kind of head harness for that pineapple!;)
BTW, to avoid that odor in Napoli, Italia, take a trip to Pompei! It's worth every minute!

Hmmmm, may just jump ship in Naples - tour Pompeii then saunter up to Rome - instead of reboarding the ship for the last night.

Because I live in Florida, Naples/Collier County was my first image, too.:p
Actually, depending upon the wind direction, they may be experiencing smoke and haze from the bad fires taking place in the Everglades right now. Water levels have been historically low there and around Lake Okeechobee this year. Not good.

Thank you localady -- we'll be in Naples on May 30! Luckily 6 of us have booked a tour to take us to Pompeii and Amalfi Coast -- guess I'll just hold my nose til we get out of Naples!
(or I can hope they'll have it taken care of by that time!)

No, I reckon that I meant to say that the people in southern Florida might be experiencing smoky conditions today.
Thanks for the catch.

Sail, how close to the cruise ship port is that restaurant? Walking distance or do we need a taxi? I'm looking for a good place for pizza after the Pompeii shorex. Thanks.

Naples is an amazing city well worth a visit. You have not lived until you have spent a New Years Eve in the old district!
"Out with the old" comes alive.
That said, it has more than its fair share of problems, especialy as of late.
We will be visiting Capri in August when there.
Ciao and cheers

We were there three times and always walked there but not directly from the ship. We would have walked around the city, by the park, shopped etc and then went for lunch. We never rode any taxis in Naples so can't be too far if going directly there from the ship.

Honorary Neapolitan (no, not the ice cream).
JFK lived there. Everyone else visited a lot
Great people, restaurants,scenery, pizza.
Crummy traffic, gipsys, dirt.
How like life. Trade-offs.
Cheers

[B]Absolutely..... a must see. To be so close and not see the Ruins of Pompei would be too bad. Fascinating. We really enjoyed our tour there which we did on a land vacation vs. a cruise stop. We were staying over in Sorrento and stopped at Pompei on our way there./B]

Sail- I had little expectation when I first visited Pompeii. I was enthralled with the ruins and plan to share them with DH next year when we return. I plan to find a way to spend more time out there than the cruise tours permit. 1 or 2 hours just doesn't do it justice.
