Very interesting stats. Thanks for both links. It doesn't seem to be the bleak income picture some people have painted. Yes, ship stewards work long and very hard ... but they're able to provide for their families in a way that would be impossible if they were home.

I know the statistics are old, but I was surprised to read them anyway.

As I only make 1300.00 per month as a relay operator for the deaf after 6 years, I can't say I feel sorry for them. They make at least what I make and many make a lot more! :(

Krazy Kruisers;

Thank you for posting the link to the cruise line positions and their benefits. I found it very informative. With all of the uproar over new tipping procedures, I have wondered exactly what the base scale is for many jobs on the cruise ships. This is the information I have been seeking to make my own decisions about tipping. The situation is not as barren and bleak as some would make it out to be.

Considering it is in U.S. dollars and board and food are already included, it is quite good money. I worked out about $450US a week for a stewardess, that is nearly a $650Aud which is considered a good wage here especially if it includes board and as most of the stewards are from the Phillipinnes where the cost of living is so much lower, they would certainly be able to well and truly provide for their families.
