I though I would share a picture of the Oosterdam at Hubbard Glacier on May 27. DW and I were on the Celebrity Millenium, which followed the Oosterdam into Yakutat Bay to see the Hubbard Glacier.

Thanks for posting your great picture of the Oosterdam. I was onboard for that sailing and was most likely on deck (freezing my butt off!) taking pictures of the glacier when you snapped your picture!
I've yet to download my pictures as I've been busier than usual since returning home from Seattle last week. I'll post a link once I finally get the darned things downloaded....I believe I even have a few of the Millenium following us in.

Great photo - and very thoughtful of you to come here and share it.
The photo makes it look like the fears and complaints earlier in the season about ships not being able to get very close to Hubbard Glacier are no longer valid. I'd be interested in hearing from mkbruce or haligonian37 or anyone who has just returned as to the situation at Hubbard Glacier. Thanks!

The Millenium got pretty close - 2-3 miles by my estimation. This is plenty close to get a good view - no need for binoculars or telephoto lenses. I saw a couple of calvings with the naked eye, but never got one with the camera. The most amazing part of the Hubbard Glacier experience was the amount of ice that the ship was sailing in.
One other factor in how close you can get to the glacier is the weather. As the afternoon was progressing, the weather kept improving. As the Millenium was the last of three ships at Hubbard that day, we were able to get a bit closer than either the Oosterdam or the Serenade of the Seas (at least according to our captain).
If anyone wants a high-res version of the picture (10 MP - 2.9 MB), let me know and I can email it to you.
If anyone was on the Oosterdam that day (May 27) I would love to get a picture of the Millenium at Hubbard Glacier. It's not exactly a picture you can take yourself :)

I'm a terrible judge of distance and it was my first trip to Hubbard Glacier, so I'm not sure what constitutes close and not close but maybe these pictures will help:

Nice to see this pic of the Oosterdam, I just booked it today for January sailing to Mexican Riviera. First time on Holland America, looking forward to trying a new cruise line. The reviews seem to be very favourable.
