Flying Dutchman? Mixed drink...

I went on Holland years ago. My favorite drink was a Holland special called a flying dutchman. It was red and I know it had gin in it. Does anyone know what the ingredients are? I would love to know...

Sorry, I'm not sure which version they served aboard HAL ships, but here are a couple of recipes. I suggest you try 6 of each and see which one you like better. :)


2 oz. gin
1 tsp. Pernod


2 oz.gin
1/2 oz. triple sec

Gin & Pernod sounds nasty! But I did find a recipe which seems to combine, at least the spirit, of these two:

3 oz. Gin
1 tsp. Dutch Curacao
Dash of Orange Bitters

I googled it and found most of the recipes are gin and triple sec which makes it white. Maybe Hal put in some grenadine? Another thought, maybe Sloe Gin was used.

Curacao is orange, which might appear red when diluted (or thru hazy memory! :) )

I did see one that used Curacao. Maybe that was it. :)

Maybe it was Jenever (Dutch Gin) and Campari. That would make anyone fly.

Although things did get very hazy... they weren't to start with. I suppose it could have just had grenadine in it. Thank you all for the help in trying to figure it out. 8)
