have you contacted Seattle? I know that they have pix of HC staterooms that have portholes that they've emailed to pax who requested them

We booked a Cat H guarantee on the Ryndam and I know I saw a picture of the portholes somewhere. It could have been that I searched in the cabin selection forum, I know I was quite surprised at just how large they actually were.

We were however upgraded to a Cat D on the main deck about 3 weeks out, but I did take DH on a hallway tour down to where most of them were located. Seemed very quiet, and not too horrible I thought for location:eek: :D :D Actually we felt they would have been just fine.

HI Desdemona and Sprocket,

I sent an email to HAL. Unfortunately they do not have a picture of a cabin with portholes. However, cp556 mentioned a cabin on the ZAANDAM with portholes and amazingly enough I googled and found a picture. You are absolutely correct, Sprocket, the portholes are a very good size.

Here is the link to the picture:

Thanks for your suggestions.

Thanks for posting the picture, its very similar to the one I saw. If I am not mistaken you may have to close the covers at night for navigational purposes. Pretty sure I read that somewhere when I was researching this category. If so your steward will probably take care of that for you.

Enjoy your cruise, and the uniqueness of your cabin. Who knows, maybe a pier upgrade is in your future, lol.

Not so, all drapes on the ship are closed when the beds are turned down at night.
But you don't have to keep them closed, steel covers are only closed in real bad weather.

Thanks for all the pictures. I think porthole cabins are ADORABLE and very "cruise" like.

I'm curious as to whether the portholes can be opened (I mean really opened, like you can stick your fishing pole out there.)

If they can, how does the crew ensure they are closed for rough seas?

No........you can't open 'em up................I tried. The glass is sealed. The covers will close and lock during rough seas, but we never had to close them................

Thanks for the info. Somehow I got those mixed up with some of the cabins up near the Navigation deck. I hate not being able to use the search function:o

I agree ...

Had one of those cabins on Main Deck FWD on Statendam, and enjoyed the peace and quiet. Never heard anything (except a few waves hitting the bow on a bouncy day at sea ... :D )

And to the OP ... not to worry, you'll be just fine. Enjoy your cruise! :)
