A good recommendation for Miami Hotel?

Our friends are cruising out of Miami on 1/3/05 - they are looking for a reasonably priced hotel, they will be staying several days pre-cruise.

Sail, I thought about that thread you were looking for a few weeks back, wasn't that for Miami hotels? Now, I can't find it... :(

Also, is there any benefit (besides the beach) to stay in South Beach as opposed to downtown Miami? Does So. Beach get really crowded?

Any help is appreciated - these friends have never traveled to Florida, I've only been to Miami twice, we stayed at the JW Marriott once, but it was about $200 per night. The other time I was there, I can't remember where I stayed... :confused:

I'm finding this happening more and more... ;)

Predictably, TripAdvisor's #1 and 2 hotels in Miami are the Mandarin Oriental and the Four Seasons. A surprising #3, though, is Amerisuites Miami Blue Lagoon (http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g34438-d252442-Reviews-Amerisuites_Miami_Blue_Lagoon-Miami_Florida.html) at rates of $99-129/night. Click the name and check the reviews.

No, not yet - we have reserved. They are also picking up our party at the airport and transporting us to the ship the following day. We chose the Santa Maria Hotel - the price was fantastic, the staff seems very friendly & accomodating and it has great reviews on tripadvisor. A far cry from the $500 - $600 we were looking at spending prior to your suggestion. :D

I will let you know how we find it - we leave 11/1/04 - I can hardly contain myself! :)
