And, so, the journey begins. I had packed Friday night, and spent most of Saturday cleaning house and taking care of some final arrangements; hence, today I had nothing to do but my normal Sunday morning responsibilities. Early service at St. Stephen was about normal, but the Main service was packed. I'm not sure what brought the people out in droves, but it was great having a nearly-full sanctuary today. However, having a packed house meant that it took longer to commune everyone, and that means that I didn't finish and get out and back to the house until almost 12:45. Mom came right over, too, and within 15 minutes we had my stuff in her trunk and we were on the road to pick up Christopher and his things before heading on to DFW.
Check in was swift, followed by no line at security. The "sniffer" machine blew air up my pant leg and gave me a sniff. I think it coughed, but apparently it didn't find anything adverse (I did use deodorant this morning) and then it let me out. After check-in we made our way up to the Admiral's lounge so that I could access a hot spot and prepare this morning's audio sermon recording for upload to my website. As it uploads, I'm writing this post.
And, so, the journey for me begins. I don't know how often I'll be reporting ... I hope to file a report every day or every-other day across my 23 days aboard ship, as well as a couple of days before and after the cruise. My plan is to upload sample photos of the ship, of the ports, and of our friends and fellow CCers. It promises to be a wonderful trip, and I welcome everyone to "come sail away with me."
Take care, and my Grace and Peace be with you all.

Greg, I want to wish you safe travels I am guessing that you are still waiting in the Admirals Lounge.
I do want to post a comment that is my personal comment to the Hosts of CC....Please DO NOT combine these live from threads. Each person has their own personality, writing style and tastes for things they like and do not like. By combing these Live from threads it will make it confusing of what and who's posts, posters are commenting on. For just these next few weeks the excitement level will be extremely high with lots of hits to the HAL board for reading about the Eurodam. I think it will be extremely important to keep each and everyone of these LIVE From threads seperate.
Thanks

EXACTLY... I couldn't agree more, Lisa.
I think it would be confusing and unmanageably long to combine Live From threads.
Please let anyone who wishes to post to have their own thread.
Thanks for starting this one, Greg. We look forward to hearing lots of wonderful stories and experiences.
Travel safely and ENJOY!!!

I see your point, but we've already got 6 threads going on the Eurodam happenings, and RuthC hasn't started any of her Live postings. Maybe Jimhannah, BillS, Grumpy1 and others will be posting too. So far Copper 10-8 is still using his old "Eurodam is starting to take shape" thread.
Just today, Sail, there were a lot of redundant and confusing postings on two threads talking about cabins 6173 and 6175, and I only see that confusion getting much worse if three or four or five more threads are added.

Your points are valid, of course.
Never before has any poster been barred from having their own thread on any (acceptable) subject and I don't think they should be now.
I know it would get confusing for me to have them all combined and try to respond to multiple 'authors' on one HUGELY LONG thread.
Perhaps some here will find their favorite thread and stick to the one or two that they enjoy most and only skim or not open other threads.
If someone always enjoys Ruth's threads, for example, shouldn't that be possible if SHE wishes to start one?
Right now DH is looking for dinner :D so that is my priority at the moment.
Later.......... :)

I have to agree with Lisa's request. It has not been difficult for me to just bookmark each individual thread in regards to the Eurodam inagural and then I will just read each one every day to see if there are new postings. I have three bookmarked at the moment and am really looking forward to more. Although I may not be ever sailing on this ship, I always look forward to the opinions of those that do. Thank you one and all.

I couldn't agree more, Lisa. This is a "once in a lifetime" cruise, and I think merging the threads would be a mistake. As you say, all of these posters have their own personality and unique writing style, and combining them would do a disservice to their posts.

Let's leave it to them to decide what they want to do.
How's that??
cruznon
June 29th, 2008, 07:20 PM
I agree completely with Lisa! I love reading the different threads and each person's personal input/insight. To combine them would be cumbersome and so lengthy. The board enourages posts and should not limit the same-subject posts in this instance.
If someone doesn't like all the threads, then choose the one you like and follow it or choose not to read any if it's not interesting.
This is a special event and many of us really look forward to following all the CCer's on board.
So here's another plea to NOT combine the different Eurodam posts. As CC readers, we know what we want to read or not....these threads should be wonderful and I look forward to ALL of them!

Let's leave it to them to decide what they want to do.
How's that??
Good idea! :D
I understand what you are all saying, truly I do. But I also understand this from the point of view of the poster---the one who is spending cruise time and $$$$$ to post from the ship.
It takes a significant amount of time to decide what to write, get it down, sign on and read through from where you left off, take notes on what people want to know about, and type in that day's report.
It usually takes me 25-30 minutes at the computer---and that's after I've written down what I'm going to post.
To have to locate and read through any number of other threads first, so you can learn what's already been covered, and what people want to know about, then go to your own and post---well, that does add to the time involved. And $$$$$.
Just so you can consider another point of view.

Ruth, in the past you and Greg have always shared your "Live From Thread" I think that tradition should continue and that is perfect and works well for the two of you. But since Brian has a totally different writing style, view of things and has started his own thread. The same with John aka Copper who does his reviews totally different and describes the ports. I think if they want to have their own Live from thread they should. It was discussed some weeks ago about combining them and I can remember several months ago when Carol and Donna's threads were merged while they were on the Noordam. My feeling was if they wanted to have their own Live from thread they should be allowed to and not be forced to have the threads combined.
Ruth this way you can go in and just look for Greg's and post with him and that his how we here on CC are accustom to :) BTW, you have a safe journey over as well.

LOL, Lisa...that was Carol and me...Sheila.
We asked for them to be combined because we had someone on our cruise who did the 1st post who was very negative. And we didn't want all of you, reading that, to have a negative feeling about the Noordam...when we were having such a grand time. Glass half empty kind of person. Carol and I felt it was not a fair critique of the Noordam. Being glass half full types!
It worked out fine having it combined because several people posted...but not every day...so it wasn't overload on that thread.
This time, though, with an Inaugural, I think the posts threads should not be combined. Brian, Greg, CopperJohn, Ruth all have different writing styles and I think they should be given their own space. And, of course, whoever else weighs in.
That's just my humble opinion. ;)

When I do virtual cruise reports, I don't even bother to read questions posted in the thread ... not until I get home. It just takes too long to refresh the page and I can burn through internet minutes that way. Unfortunately, Cruise Critic is very, very slow when accessing it from onboard ship.
So what I do is write the reports offline, on my laptop. Then I just take the laptop down to the Explorations Cafe, go online and post.
Doesn't cost much of anything that way.

Hello all and a safe and marvellous voyage to those sailing on the Eurodam.
What I am doing is setting up an individual word.doc for each individual and keep adding to those docs each time they post therefore it does not really matter where they post as I will keep each one seperate.
Already have bpsf.doc and RevNeal.doc.
Hopefully i do not infringe on anyone's copyright !

The Happy Wanderer prefers to read through, so as to know what's on people's minds. She wants to get the answers, and try to answer questions, while the opportunity is there. She likes it to feel like a conversation---a sharing of the cruise with the folks not aboard.

Here's a tip to save some connect time by reading threads off-line when using your own laptop: once you've brought up a thread, go to the "Thread Tools" and click Show Printable Version. Then do a Save As. After you've done that for several threads, then disconnect and go read them all off-line. :D

Access to the bow on Vista ships is only available when there is 'scenic cruising/viewing' and it is opened for guests OR with permission.
We requested permission to visit Noordam's Bell and it was granted. We went forward on Upper Promenade past all the cabins until we reached a door marked "Crew Only". Having been given permission, we proceded through there ( :) it's the OB ;) ) and opened the next door which took us to that BEAUTIFUL BELL!!!! It had been newly shined and polished and was sparkling in the sun.
A wave would require 'special permission' but certainly it might be granted.
On "S" Class ships, access to the bow is through the show lounge. :)
We always visit the bell on 'My' :) Maasdam.

June 30th, 2008, 11:36 AM
When I need to go see the BELL, it's an emergency! :)
We always ask permission before going there. Captain (s) has waved to us from the Bridge when he has seen us out there. We only go when ship is tied up and when we've been told it is okay. Most usually we go as we are readying to sail away from a port. Just before the lines are let go.
I can't go to any HAL ship and not go see (and get a photo at ) the beautiful BELL> :)

But aren't those doors marked Emergency Exit Only?
Yup. Those are the doors. I use 'em every time I'm trying to get out there. :D
Those times would be scenic cruising, of course. On the Antarctic cruise the instructions had to do with the outside route---no info was given on this easy, direct, no stairs, easy to get to a restroom, route. I don't do stairs if I can avoid them, so I always go through the show lounge.

I look forward to your preview of Eurodam before we board on 7/15. I know it takes time and energy (perhaps easier than writing a sermon, though) but it is very much appreciated by an ever-widening group of readers. I thought I read awhile back that you might have some "duties," while on board. Are you really on vacation or will you have services? We will need some special dispensation since this $$$ is going to HA and not the building fund:(

Murphy's Law should have an airplane corollary: No matter where you sit on an airplane, you will have someone in front of you who put's their chair back the instant they sit down and doesn't return it to the full-upright position until it's time to disembark the plane (ignoring flight attendant directions to put them forward for takeoffs and landings and when they eat). Yes, that happened to me again this flight. Thankfully, I was able to sleep through about half the inconvenience, so in the end it wasn't that bad. More annoying (this is for JVrhovac), this same person boarded early, had 4 pieces of carry on luggage, and used my overhead compartment for his two extra pieces. This meant I had to search out an unused place. And, the coup de grac is that -- yes -- there was a screaming baby behind me.
At any rate ... aside from this, the flight was a mostly uneventful 9 and a half hours. They offered us a choice of rubber-chicken or mushy Lasagna ... I chicken out on the chicken and chose the imitation Lasagna ... Executive Chef Rudi Sodamin would not have approved. With the screen about 4 inches from my nose, I watched one of the inflight movies (Casablanca), and I listened to part of a book on my iPod until I fell asleep. I woke up in time to sip some coffee and eat a bit of a hot croissant and then we landed.
Unlike Brian's tale, we found London Heathrow to be actually quite nice. Terminal 3 was clearly a dump, but the process for transfer from 3 to 5 was efficient and easy to follow. We quickly made our way down to the Heathrow Express and got on a bus that took us to Terminal 5. Here we went through ticketing and got a new boarding pass, then we went up and through security. We then had several hours to sit and relax before our flight from London to Amsterdam. It was a joy spending this time with BillS, JimH, and their DWs. They were on a flight that departed an hour before ours, but soon we followed for an uneventful 45 minute flight to Amsterdam. Sadly, upon lading in Amsterdam we had to taxi for about 20 minutes to get to the terminal ... we thought we were going to have to drive to Rotterdam in the plane!!!!! :D There was a HAL executive on our flight, and some of us Eurodam passenger gave thought to cornering him, but we were good and didn't bother him (don't believe everything JimH says!). ;)
Passport control was quick, and so was picking up our luggage. From there we left the security area and were intercepted by BillS and JimH, who were waiting for us. We all piled into a van and made our way to Rotterdam.
The NH Atlanta is a lovely European Hotel; while clean, it is also very much sub-standard by US expectations. Our room is on the Mezzanine level, and there is no elevator to access it, so we had to climb 2 flights of stairs, the marble steps covered with a lovely runner rug. Those with Physical challenges should take note! Those with breathing issues should also note: there is no AC, and our room is on two levels (you enter on one floor, climb a winding flight up steps to the second floor, and here you find the beds, a desk, TV, chairs ... and the hotel room's one redeeming factor: an AMAZING bathroom with a tub large enough for someone like me, who is six feet tall, to lay down and and completely submerge! YUMMY! I was in that tub very quickly and enjoying a few minutes of utter relaxation. I came out feeling (mostly) human again.
After an hour's rest and re-freshening, BillS, JimH, and their lovely wives joined us for a night out "on the town." On this, our first night in Europe, we decided to dine on ... get ready for it ... Mexican Food! Yes, that's right, we had our choices of 31 different Asian restaurants, an Italian restaurant, 3 incarnations of "The Scottish Restaurant" (McDonalds), and even a Subway Sandwich shop. But ... we decided to try the Dutch Version of Mexican. It was ... well ... not Mexican, or Tex-Mex, nor any incarnation of Mexican I have ever tried. It wasn't bad, however, and we had a lovely dinner enjoying conversation and fighting the sand-man, who was beating rather viciously on us all.
After dinner we waked around a bit more, picked up some water and soft drinks at a local convenience store, and then we headed back to our rooms for a good night's sleep. And, I must say, I won't have any trouble sleeping tonight. The clock on my laptop screen says it's 2:39 pm on Monday afternoon (Central Time). However, here in Rotterdam it's 9:39 and the sky is starting to get grey. I'm tired, and am VERY happy to be here.
Tomorrow is the Christening of the new ms Eurodam. It promises to be a very special event, and I'm very glad I'm here and ready to be a part of it.

Allow me to address the issue of threads -- combined or independent. After discussing this issue on the board several months ago, chatting with others, and thinking about it, I decided to post my own thread. That there will be 8 or 14 of them from the Inaugural Cruises is y'all problem, not mine. :D I pray you enjoy them all ... I know I'll enjoy reading the others when I get home! :D
If any of my friends aboard the Eurodam wishes to post on my thread, either instead of a thread of their own or in addition such, that's perfectly ok by me. So, please set that whole issue aside and let's get on with the subject at hand ... the Eurodam's Inaugural!
Oh, and a great big thank you to all of those who have expressed well-wishes to me! I greatly covet your prayers and your kind thoughts.
Peace!

Oh my, the kicking kid ALWAYS sits behind me!
I remember that I just gotten off a very long flight from Hawaii and was connecting in Atlanta to go home. A woman and her 4 year old sat behind me and the child began to kick my seat.
After politely asking the mother to control her son several times she finally replied that he could do whatever he wanted.
I got up from my seat and asked the man sitting behind the mother if I could borrow his seat for a few moments. He grinned and said 'be my guest'.
It was amazing how quickly the mother got her child under control. ;)

Nope ... not this time. No kids kicking the back of my seat. Ugh! I've had some pretty poor luck when it comes to kids screaming, kicking the back of seats, spitting milk into the air, picking their nose and throwing boogers around. :D Yes ... happens. I try to remember that they're children, I used to be a children (:D), and that I probably deserve it.
By contrast, there was a young boy and girl in seats a few rows further back in the center section. They were quiet the entire flight, spending the time watching the children's TV channels and playing the in-flight games. I was deeply impressed with how well behaved they were! :D

Good MORNING from glorious Rotterdam!
Ah, what a wonderful night's sleep! There's nothing like getting a full 8 or 9 hours after an exhausting 36 hours of nearly constant activity (traveling). I got up about 8:30 am local time, puttered around the room for a bit, took a shower, searched through one of my bags for my dress shoes (found them in the last place I looked ... amazing how that happens!) and put things back into order. About 9 am I turned on BBC News and woke up Christopher; he got ready, and then we went up to the 7th floor, where we had breakfast on the dining room balcony overlooking the lovely cityscape of Rotterdam. The food was excellent, and the place wasn't crowded. No Dutch Rats (see Brian's thread), but there was one girl with huge round eyes who kept toddling over to look up at me as I sipped my coffee. I smiled at her, and her mother came over and took her hand to lead her back to their table. She stayed there for , maybe, 5 minutes, then wandered back over to stand at the side of my table, looking at up at me with those big round blue eyes. Such a sweet, quiet, adorable little girl. The mother came over again and apologized for her daughter (in French). Christopher interpreted for me, since my French is limited to several naughty words and some Latin rooted theological terms.
Now I'm sitting in my room, watching BBC 2 and reading my e-mails. In an hour or so we'll start getting ready for the ceremony. We'll Taxi from here down to the ship terminal, timing it to get there about 2:30 pm ... in time for the Champaign reception. :)

Greetings from Rotterdam -- Wednesday, July 2, 2008, 1 am.
We just got back from our post-Christening Dinner at the Euromast and, as the photos download from my camera, I thought I would take a few minutes to share a few thoughts from this day.
Christopher and I arrived at the Cruise Terminal at 2:15 pm (early, we thought) and were admitted after showing our ID and our voucher. They directed us up to a large chamber where the Champaign Reception was being held. Even though it wasn't supposed to begin until 2:30 pm, there were already a lot of people there. Indeed, we had only been in the room for about 15 minutes, and finished one glass of "champaign" when the drinks vanished and we were being ushered outside to the stands for the ceremonies. What they heck?? Most of our party wasn't even here yet. Brian and Scotty were there, for sure, belly-up to the bar and enjoying themselves -- Brian ... that jacket was incredible!!!!!! -- and Grumpy and Slinky came in right behind us; however, most of our CC group was not yet there! Christopher tried to get another glass of champaign and was told "no more booze for you." So ... that was that.
We proceeded outside and along the pier, where we had a wonderful view of the ship. HAL was clearly creating a festive occasion, with circus-type entertainment all around. Sever HAL staff members came up to me as we made our way along the length of the ship to where the grand stand and the ceremonies were going to be held. Steve (ShipCafe) said hello, as did Nathan and several others whom I have met and known over the years. We were directed to wonderful seats, in the lower half of the stands and took our places.
The day was marvelous. The sky was blue, there was a slight breeze, low humidity, and a bright sun. Indeed, there was a little too much sun, and as the afternoon wore on we were all happy for the big building to our west when it began to cast its shadow across us all. However, truth be told we could not ask for a more wonderful day.
John (Copper) and his lovely DW and several others came in and joined us in the stands, as did Jim H and Bill S and their wives. A few more staffers came by to introduce themselves to Brian, to myself, and to others of us as the time grew near for the celebration to begin. All, in all, it was pretty much what I had expected.
I'll not go into detail on the entertainment program ... it was excellent, but not quite what I had expected ... the "concert" we were told to expect really didn't come until after the ceremony was over. Nevertheless, the mens quartet was excellent and entertaining, and everybody seemed to enjoy them.
Then, with little fanfare, the Queen B came in escorted by Stein Kruse and Captain Jeroen van Donselaar. She was truly regal in her floral print top and skirt, with purple, green, and orange colors being the dominant theme. Christopher thinks the hat must be her signature touch, because so many of the photos of her have her wearing that same kind of hat. She looked very good. Everybody present stood, and immediately the orchestra played the National Anthem of the Netherlands and of the United States of America. It was very done, as was all the music in the program.
Setting aside the speeches, the pouring of the wine over the bless brought back memories of Judy (Sail7Seas) and her DH doing the honors for the Noordam. Wow, that was wonderful! Today I certainly recognized the Mariner Ambassadors from photographs and from 2 cruises on which they were passengers along with me. That was a nice surprise!
After there ceremony and after the queen and other special guests left to tour the ship, etc., our group left and made its way over to the watertaxi stand and took a watertaxi across to the Euromast for our dinner together. It was about 6 pm when we got there and we were quickly seated for an hour of cocktails and conversation before everybody else showed up at 7 pm. Sadly, the Euromast Restaurant will receive among my lowest marks ever for a very expensive dinner (50 Euros per-person). It wasn't the food so much as it was the horrible service and the uncaring thought which went into where our tables were located. We were supposed to be given a view o the ship: we were placed on the other side of the restaurant where we couldn't see the ship at all. Additionally, this was on the west side of the restaurant and this meant that we had to sit in the roasting, sweltering hot son for the entire evening. Yes ... 4 hours of HORRIBLE sunlight (from 6 pm until the sun set at 10 pm). The views from the observation platform were wonderful, and we escaped the burning sun on several occasions to enjoy the cool breezes and the shade and the views of the ship from there. But, then, it was back into the oven, to temperatures that ranged in the upper 80s (or higher) with enough direct sunlight to give me something of a bad burn (my face and forehead are red). The butter melted in its dish on the table, and the water was warm (at best). We protested this situation on several occasions, but to no avail. It was miserable. However, the conversation of our CCer friends was, indeed, enjoyable. And, truly, that was the whole reason we were there ... to enjoy each other's company. And enjoy it we did.
After dinner, after the sun set, at about 11:15 pm the city of Rotterdam put on a wonderful 20 minute long fireworks show in the river beside the Eurodam. It was lovely and the perfect celebratory ending to a great day. Despite the horrible conditions at the Euromast, the Inagural day of the Eurodam will fondly remembered.
I hope to have pictures to upload in a few minutes. I need to review them and choose a very few of the "best" to shrink and then post. So ... be patient!

Greg, so excited to come on and see a post from you. I couldn't wait to read your impressions of the day. I was so sorry we couldn't see the crowds at all when we watched the ceremonies and I admit confusion toward the end because the music continued (and it was amazing music!) but all we saw was what looked like elevator doors with ms Eurodam across it. I was sorry they didn't at least keep the camera on the orchestra, and preferably on the people so we could have looked for you!
What a shame about the dinner ... no matter how wonderful something is, often there's that little fly in the ointment;) . Still it had to be wonderful getting together with everyone after such an amazing event.
Carol, yes ... Ode to Joy was one of my favorites today, among several others.
Again, Greg, you never disappoint. Can't wait for the pictures!

And there you have it ... a few photos from the Inaugural Ceremonies of the ms Eurodam! It was, indeed, a special event, and one that I will long remember. Already the ordeal at dinner is fading fast as the joy of the day, the wonderful company of my friends, and the coming 23 days aboard a glorious ship looms ahead of me. Tomorrow we head down to the ship to check-in and aboard around noon. Then, tomorrow, sail-away will be at 4 pm, Rotterdam time. :)

No, unfortunately, I had a very full day, and didn't even get to CC until almost 5:00 PM. I hope to be able to watch the reruns---maybe tomorrow night.
Don't feel bad. Despite my best intentions, I didn't get to watch either. I was at work, planning to enjoy the live feed on my T3 line, but then all you know what broke loose and, since I was on the "clock," so to speak ... and overtime at that ... it was so much for the Eurodam dedication. By the time I got the "fire" put out, the dedication was long over. I can't wait until they put up the "rerun."

Greg, fantastic pictures:) Did you by chance get any pictures from this evenings dinner at the Euromast with your fleoow CCer's?
My camera was running low on juice (that's what I get for not charging the battery last night) so I saved it for the later-night fireworks show. However, Jim H got a few shots of us, as did Bill S. I'll get at least a couple of those for display later.
As a side note, it was very nice getting to meet John (Copper). He seems to be a prince of a man, if you catch my meaning. :D Seriously, though ... I look forward to getting to know him better as the days press on aboard the Eurodam.

The joy of your 23 days onboard will overshadow the bad experience tonight, I am certain! It's disappointing, for sure, when something doesn't meet your expectations, though.
I enjoyed watching all of you from my computer...a wonderful ceremony.

Just back from breakfast (yes, a late one). I slept in until about 9:30, which means that we only just barely bade it before the closed the doors. But, I got some bread, some eggs, some ham, fresh squeezed OJ, and "Holy Water" (Coffee), so I'm going ok. :D
Thinking back over last night, I think the most annoying thing about the dinner was that (1) the arrangements had been made for us to sit on the side facing the ship and, yet, they put us on the other side of the resturant; and (2) the staff's utter intransigence in dealing with the matter. The heat and the oppressive sun was really quite bad, and I'm from Texas so I'm sure that some of the others found it much worse. However, it was the staff's attitude that just soured the whole deal for me. It's not as if there were no tables on the other side of the dining room ... there were plenty of empty tables far away from the direct sunlight, and there were even quite a few empty tables with a view of the ship. It's just that they didn't care. We had people who are far more sun-sensitive than I am -- people with skin cancer conditions, people with sun sensitivities due to medications, etc. The staff didn't care, didn't offer any kind of alternative when I and several others complained and explained why it was an issue ... even though there were plenty of tables not being used far away from the direct onslaught of the sun, that didn't matter. Or group was in its place, and it is impossible to move you. We were in our place and that was that. Endure it. When I responded, at one point with, "then I think we'll leave," the staff person got this shocked look on his face and said "I'll get the manager." The manager's response was "fine, sir ... you will still owe us the agreed-upon price for the evening." In short, we were stuck. I considered taking off the clerical collar and telling him precisely what I thought of him and his establishment, but then I thought better of it and decided that a well-written letter to the ownership with a copy of my review, which will be posted on travel advisor, would be a much better course of action.
<Sigh> It's over and, as I said, once the sunburn subsides on my face the memory will fade entirely as only the good time with my friends remains. And, truly, the blazing sun and heat aside, it was a very good time.
Well ... I've got to close this down and head off to the ship. We're going to transfer there in just a little under an hour and check in. :) So, the next time I post it will be from the lovely new Eurodam!

Have enjoyed your pictures and accounts of events very much - almost as good as being there!
When I was reading your description of your restaurant disaster a bell rang. When we were travelling in England we went to a cafe for lunch - only had an hour - we sat for half an hour as everyone else was served - even people coming in the door long after we had. The waitresses completely ignored us. We finally had to leave to get back to the bus - no lunch that day. It was prejudice pure and simple. there was a lot of feeling in Britain about that time about North American tourists overrunning the country in the summer.
I wonder if that was the case with your restaurant - since they could have moved you out of the sun since there were empty tables available.
It is unbelievable that didn't seat you in the area that you requested and then they insisted that you stay in your discomfort.
what would they have done if you had just moved anyway and settled into another area? Refused to serve you I guess.
You were very gracious in the circumstances - I bet they have the tip added automatically so you couldn't even show your displeasure by not tipping!

Hi ya'll; it's 6:54 PM local (Netherlands) time and Eurodam left Hoek van Holland about 40 min ago. We just dropped the pilot in the North Sea (jk;) ) and we're off to Hamburg, Germany! Lots of Dutchies lining the sides of the "Nieuwe Waterweg" (New Waterway) out of Rotterdam today; lots of "honking the horn" by Capt. Jeroen and lots of water being shot into the air by the Rotterdam Port Authority's fireboats. Great to watch!
I don't want to hijack the Rev's thread (I'll start my own soon) but just wanted to add that Maria and I really enjoyed meeting the CC group both in the stands during the ceremony yesterday and at the Euromast's dinner. Finally meeting all these folks you've "talked to" or whose exploits you've read about on CC was a nice experience (the Rev, Christopher, Brian, Scotty, Brian's parents, Bill & Virginia, Jim & Donna, Mary Ellen & Karl, ofcourse the one and only Grumpy & Slinkie, "Silver Wing" (Cheryl & DH) all very nice folks - looking forward to getting to know them better in the next 15 days.
We, also, are sorry about the less than great experience in the Euromast last night but I do want to give Cheryl a big thumbs up for making the arrangements. She did everything right (from another country) and it's never a day at the beach trying to make reservations for eighteen.
Thanks for traveling along with us! More to come!

Greetings from Aboard the Eurodam:
Embarkation: Quick but convoluted.
It didn't make much sense, but it worked. We arrived, via taxi, at the Cruise Terminal about 11:30 am. The shore-side porters took our luggage from us -- I gave them several Euros for our 4 bags -- and we were off to check-in! Or ... not, actually. Because before we could enter the terminal we had to line up and get a boarding card (useless) and a health form. HAL should start sending these things out with he documentation OR, perhaps, put it on-line for people to fill out, because it's the same thing every time ... anybody been sick, vomit, etc ad nauseum (literally). Oh, I know, it needs to be filled out right there so that one can share what's happened to them in-transit, etc. But, still ... most people with half a brain in their heads will probably lie about it.
After we collected the boarding car and the form we passed through security then headed up stairs to check in. There was no line. We went right up to the check-in counter and went through the process, as always. They wanted to see our ticket books -- the printed out form wasn't enough! -- and they would NOT check us in for the July 5th cruise. :( We then proceeded to board the ship. They would NOT let anyone board without the photographers taking our pictures. Yes ... that's right ... mandatory. We tried to go around, the security stopped us. We then passed through pass-port control (one last time) and then boarded the ship. All-in-all, it was fast and painless. However, it was a bit convoluted. Oh, well ... I suppose each port has it's procedures.
Staterooms were not yet ready, of course, so we proceeded up to the lido for some lunch, which was nice. More-or-less the usual, with a few nice twists.
Initial Observations:
The Lido is too small for this size ship. I'm not kidding ... they've REDUCED the seating capacity of the Lido Restaurant and the Terrace dining area while, at the same time, increasing the passenger capacity of the ship. It makes no sense, but that's precisely what they've done. :( The center-forward dining area in the Lido Restaurant is about half the size of the ones on the Vistas, and the rest of the dining room is shorter in length than the Vista's. At least, that's how it feels and how it looks. The decor is very nice, and I must stay that I love the color schemes both here and throughout the ship, however that doesn't off-set the fact that there are not enough seats to handle the traffic. This became especially apparent on Wednesday morning (the first morning aboard ship) when I could NOT find a place to sit and eat. It was 8:30 am and I had obtained my omelette and coffee and was looking for a place to sit and eat it. I orbited the Lido restaurant 3 times, the terrace twice, and the aft area where the tables are located once. NOTHING. Not a single place to sit. The restaurant was utterly packed, and nobody was budging. It was then realized where I could find a place to sit down and eat my now cold omelette. I walked back out into the Lido pool area. Yes ... all the terrace tables were taken. But, nobody was using the Cabanas. So ... I sat down on the round thingy, put my tray on my lap, and began to eat.
About half way through my omelette, a staff person came running over to me and said "You're not allowed to sit here, sir."
I replied "Then find me a place to sit and eat my breakfast, for I spent 10 minutes while my breakfast was getting cold looking for a place to sit but couldn't find one. These places were empty, so I sat here. I'll be done in 5 minutes and then you can have it back."
"But these are for rent, sir."
"I rented the public areas when I booked the ship. But, since the public spaces for eating are full, I'm sitting here."
I then proceeded to ignore him while I finished my breakfast. He went away. He came back a couple of minutes later with a white-dressed "officer." I was finished, so I stood and handed him the tray, and said "thank you." The officer said "This area is reserved, sir." I said "yes, but your public space was packed to the gills, so unless I was going to sit on the deck there was no place else to sit. As it was, my breakfast was cold."
I liked the Lido cabana I appropriated for a breakfast sit-down. But, as feared, their placement, plus the reduction in Lido Restaurant spaces elsewhere, has left the ship with too small of dining areas.
The Dinner-Time Screw Up.
I booked this cruise 18 months ago. I was confirmed with a Upper Level 8 pm Fixed Dining Time. She ship isn't full. And, yet, I was given Open Dining. When I complained I was informed that there was nothing that could be done, that 4/5th of the ship requested Traditional, and that this is the way it would have to be. I later found out that Brian and Scotty -- Deluxe Suite guests -- were also shoved into Open Dining! However, because they were Deluxe Suite Guests they were given a bit more courteous treatment than I was. They gave the Matre' D a copy of the list that HAL had been given by our TA and told them to fix it. They did. They set up a reserved set of tables for us on the lower level (yes, the open seating level) at 8 pm. Indeed, our first evening we spoke to many people who were extremely put out and upset by this disaster of a dining situation. The lower level is crammed to the fullest extent. It was impossible to get through the doors, they were handing beepers to everybody in Open Seating because the dining room was so full, and when we went upstairs to try and enter there and go down they, at first, were not going to let us past because our tables were on the lower level. It was a true gymkhana. Dinner itself was fairly quick and the food was good ... I'll get dinner that much of a positive score. But, the place was crammed with people and there were a lot of unhappy passengers regarding the dining situation.
God only knows what will happen with our dinner arrangements for the next 22 days. I expect we're not going to get that for which we were confirmed.
Apart from the Lido being too small and the Dining Arrangements being all screwed up, I must say that this ship is LOVELY. The decor is very much HAL-ish in nature. I like the cabin wood treatments ... they're much better in person that the photos seemed to indicate they would be. The lighting arrangements in the cabins are insufficient, but there are work-arounds for that. The public rooms are lovely, though the change to the Explorer's Lounge (the addition of the Bar) is going to take some getting used to. It's no longer as quiet of place as it used to be. The area of listening to the classical music is larger and better arranged, but otherwise the whole area now has a different "feel" to it. I've yet to "try it out" for more than a minute or two, so I'll let you know more when I've had that chance. I really like the location of the Explorations Cafe up on the starboard side of the crows next. This is a very nice configuration, with a lovely view. I also like the arrangement of the Crows Nest itself ... the bar space is especially nice.
Access to the forward bow is now open from deck 5-forward. Just go forward on the port or starboard side hallways, through a set of doors (outer doors dogged but otherwise not marked as staff only) and you'll be outside on the raised portion of the forward bow. I have pictures, and it's an easy process. One can visit the lower forward section, where the bell is, but the view from there isn't quite as nice. That's a staff-only area, and you might find a staffer with a burr up his/her rear, but otherwise there's not a problem if you're heading outside. Just go through the "staff only" doors, turn right and go right out through the exterior dogged door. The space here is very small, however, and the view isn't as good, so I'd stick to the raised forward bow.
Ok ... that's enough for first impressions. We've just docked in Hamburg German, and Christopher wants to go eat a Hamburger. So ... we're off.

Greg, as ever, it's good to read what you have to say. Sorry to hear about the crowded Lido situation, especially since you say the ship wasn't full. So, they actually police those cabanas? Wondered how that would work.
Thanks for the info on getting to the bow. I guess I'll settle for the upper bow and take my bell picture from there. Have fun in Germany.

I've been loving your posts. Thanks so much for taking the extra time (and expense) to put them up there. What a horrid situation in the Lido. I've had the same thing happen to me on regular Vista's with circling around and around (like a plane coming into Atlanta) Not a good sign that the Eurodam has smaller space. Yet another reason for me to head to the dining room for breakfast or order in.
Glad you like the decor. Keep up the amazing posts.

I would have done exactly the same thing with regard to the cabana....
I do hope to hear how this works out into your cruise... Sounds like they could definitely use more space for the LIDO. We had to circle a few times each morning on the Oosterdam and always ended up with something, but would have definitely used the cabanas if they were sitting there empty...
On an aside, I am intrigued about the German hamburger??? How was it???

This initial posting is marvelous and a little sad because you had to eat a cold omelette. Hopefully things will improve with the dining situation as the voyage progesses. Your writing is superb and I delight in every word.

I feared that Lido seating would be a problem when I first heard about those pool-side cabanas! :( I hope there's enough complaints that they get scrapped soon. :)
Are you using internet from your cabin, or do you need to go elsewhere to get a decent wifi signal? If from your cabin, how close are you to one of those hallway white cone antennas (or access points or transponders or whatever you choose to call them)? Thanks. :)

Hmmmmm seems these new cabanas are off to a rocky start *LOL*
Personally I would rather have a free table to eat my meal at than a cabana , but I guess time will tell how well these things go over.

Hey, Rev....I don't suppose there are any Unitarian services on the ship for my husband and me, are there? Thanks for your reports!!
Hello Sheila and Tim ... well ... there's the protestant ("interdenominational") service, but that might be just a little too "traditional Christian" for a "Unitarian-Universalist."

Hope you Eurodam "virgin" cruisers raise a stink about the lack of space on the lido due to the cabanas. Maybe that is why they are sectioned off by curtains rather than by hard dividers like they are on the retreat - perhaps they expect to do away with them. Hope they are gone by our Jan. cruise.
As you know, Everything is too traditional for Unitarians!

FAR from hamburger, we went to the Tamarind Restaurant on the Observation Deck mid-ships and had a wonderful lunch! The place is beautiful and food was fantastic ... spicy and delicious! Ran into Scotty and Brian there and we toured the Silk Din Lounge and Bar. Now THAT is a GREAT addition to the ship. Photographs don't do it justice ... not even close ... and I'm looking forward to experiencing it for cocktails tonight and on other nights. It's not overly large, but it's certainly nice.
First impression of the Pinnacle Bar is that it's not as "bad" as it looks ... those chairs do look like the belong in an Erector Set, however the bar stools are actually comfy and the room has a nice feel to it. I don't think it will get overly crowded.
The Sports Bar is FANTASTIC. It's a large rectangular bar with a center island in the middle where screens are hung. So ... rather than being divided into two rooms, as on the Vistas, it a much larger, more open space.
The Piano bar looks and feels just like their siblings on the Vistas. I walked in, looked around, and walked out last night because nothing was going on.
The Casino is arranged somewhat differently, but since I didn't examine the tables closely I don't know what games were where.
I've not yet been in the Northern Lights ... perhaps tonight? The Show Lounge is really just a big theater now, and the chairs are comfortable (at least for me). I gather shorter people find them a bit uncomfortable (at least, that's what I'm told).
Ok ... that's a few more observations. We're going to meet Brian and Scotty now and go ashore for some shopping. I'll report more later, and I hope to have some sample photos from sail away and of some of the sights aboard ship later tonight.
Oh ... internet reception is excellent in my stateroom, and the connection rate seems to be much faster than on prior ships.

I'm sorry to hear about your unfortunate experience at breakfast. I'm glad you spoke up to the first person that came along and then you were able to state your case.
I'm wondering if HAL planned to have less space availabe so that pax would be "forced" to go to a pay venue for lunch and dinner since the dining room seems to be a problem also.
Your posts are always so informative. Thank you for starting this thread and keeping us informed. Hope you are having a wonderful time shopping in Hamburg.

Greg, as always, wonderful observations and reporting by you! Thank you (yet again) for doing this. We appreciate you.
The dining situation is a little depressing, isn't it? And here we go again with 80% asking for Traditional! I won't go down that path;) I really hope they get everything straightened out and you get the 8:00 sitting you want.

Greetings from Aboard the Eurodam:

Hi and thanks for your comments. Have to say I would be mad at the breakfast situation and you were 100% right to sit down where you did. Maybe the Cabanas should be replaced by lots more tables and chairs !!
Have to say from comments so far from friends and collegues everyone seems to think they are a waste of precious space. The dining situation is not ideal either. I really do hope that these are just initial teething problems but I guess only time will tell.

This has little to do with the Eurodam and Rev. Neal's excellent review, but I'm convinced that my body emantes some mysterious cosmic rays that attract children who kick seats. If I am on a plane and there is one child in the hemisphere who kicks seats, it is a law of nature that said child will be seated behind me. This, coupled with the person in front of me who must, I repeat must recline his/her seat is proof of the existence of my cosmic rays!
On a recent flight a parent told me that they couldn't control their toddler. (I had already asked him very gently to stop kicking.) I suggested that they review which was the parent and which was the child! Luckily, about half way between LA and Chicago, the little one fell asleep.

LOL, Greg, your comparison of the Pinnacle Grill's wine bar to an erector set is dead-on. I frankly don't find the seats there comfortably asthetically or physically....
But the Silk Den is fabulous and I always love the Ocean Bar and Explorers Lounge. Think I was too old for Northern Lights a decade ago (and I wasn't even 40 then!)

Sail away from Rotterdam was a festive occasion. Thousands of people came out to say goodbye, both at the terminal and in front of the New York and the HAL European HQ ... and, along the banks of the river. We had many boats escorting us, too. It was a good sendoff from this ship's homeport.

Today we were in Hamburg. It was rainy and very humid. We didn't do much. After lunch in the Tamarind I spent the day wandering the ship and talking with friends and getting a nap. Then, I got up and got dressed and went out for drinks in the Ocean Bar. Service in the bar was VERY slow, and Grumpy and Slinky never were able to place an order even though they sat there for over 40 minutes, waiting.
Dinner in the Main Dining room was about as bad as first night, if not a bit slower. The food was ok (my steak was overcooked), the conversation excellent, but the service was slow Slow SLOW SSSSLLLLOOOWWWW. It took almost half the meal to get a win order in and filled. That's CRAZY.
After dinner we went up to the Crows Nest and sat and chatted about future cruise plans while waiting for the City of Hamburg's Fireworks show, which began at 10:45 pm and lasted until 11 pm, when the Eurodam set sail. We then made our way down to the Northern Lights for a couple hours of dancing and having fun. The Northern Lights redesign is a mix of good and strange and not-so-good. I'll detail more with photos, later, but suffice it to say that we did have a good time anyway and danced and chatted (yelled at each other to be heard) until 1 am. Children, however, were present in the disco even past midnight, though they were with their parents so I'm sure it was "ok."
Tomorrow promises to be a nice, busy day at sea with Team Trivia, etc., to occupy us as we make our way toward our next port of call -- Wonderful Wonderful Copenhagen ... and the rest of our dear CCer friends. Tomorrow Night is "CC-Formal night," however I don't think it will make much of a difference. People on the ship are really dressing up every night. I noticed quite a few suits and ties and such throughout the ship and in the main dining room tonight, with many of those men who were not in suit in tie wearing slacks, sports jacket, and nice shirt. That's one of the observations that several have made ... the large number of people who are dressing up this cruise. It's a nice sight and it does match the atmosphere that HAL has tried to create aboard this ship.

You mentioned Brian and Scotty have a deluxe veranda suite. What type of room do you and Christopher have? A mini suite? A veranda suite? Can you describe how it compares to the Vista Class cabins?
I'm in a G-category Outside cabin on Deck 4, midships (4104). We have a partially obstructed view, meaning that I have a view out between two tenders and that there is some equipment directly in front of my window. However, the window is a very wide floor-to-ceiling window (taking most of the exterior wall). I love these cabins. They are very similar to the outside with Verandah cabin, minus the Verandah.
We had originally booked an aft Verandah Cabin (VA category) but changed our minds when the cruise was extended from 10 to 23. $$$, you understand.
Given that the Signature class ship is just an upgraded Vista, the cabins are VERY similar. The interior decor differs somewhat from a Vista's, but the arrangements are almost the same. Can't say which I prefer as of yet. Give me a week or more before I state one way or another.

Greg, maybe you should be the one to point this out to Stan Kuppens and maybe he would give this one to you as a souvenir:D This could bring in a high dollar on eBay

I finally have some free time to check one of the threads about the Eurodam and I have to wade through 5 PAGES of posts on unrelated topics or posts that add no real information on the Eurodam. I can't believe how many people post just for the sake of posting. There was no information about the didication until post 112 and no info on the ship until 171 (I think that number is correct).
I have my fireproof underwear on, so flame away.
Well, your post is guaranteed to bring the thread back on topic....

To sum it all up so far: a lovely ship, horrible service, Lido is a disaster, cabanas are a distraction, maybe this does not belong in the HAL fleet?
Don't all new ships have problems on the first voyages.? I remember reading about all the problems on the Queen Victoria after her launch.

Oh my goodness......the ship has sailed a total of two days and you're booting her out of the fleet already???
I think he meant the cabanas need to go. ;)

RevNeal, you have such wonderful pics. Thank you for sharing your observations. I appreciate your opinions. That sign is proof that you pay attention to details.
Thank you for taking the time to post. I hope the dining room experience will get better soon. Two thumbs up to everyone who is dressing up for dinner on this very special cruise.

I have to say that the Cabanas just look like a way for HAL to make money. The cabanas are out of place and confining. I'm surprised they tried to kick Rev Neil out of there when he was enjoying his hot breaifast that had turned cold in his search for a table.

I've just been a lurker on this thread, but must say thanks for the photos - it's wonderful to see a new ship. Could you post a photo of your cabin; I've never seen the ones with floor-to-ceiling windows. I'm looking forward to reading about the rest of your journey.
Does the menu in the dining room appear to be the same across the fleet, or are there special offerings for the inaugural voyage?
Smooth Sailing! :) :) :)

Hi Greg,
I hope your weather on arrival in Copenhagen tomorrow is as good as it has been the last 3 days. Just glorious here.
I need a small favor. After reading about the dining room problems you, Brian and the others had, would you please make sure that I'm seated with you. I'm in VT 11006 and have late seating on my paper but it sounds like they may ignore it.
Can't wait to see you and finally meet Christopher as well as Brian's parents.
Love,
Joyce (Rachelson) just in case they can't find me by cabin number:eek:

On a recent flight a parent told me that they couldn't control their toddler. (I had already asked him very gently to stop kicking.) I suggested that they review which was the parent and which was the child! Luckily, about half way between LA and Chicago, the little one fell asleep.
You are far more patient than I to wait for the kid to fall asleep. If the parent told me she had no control over her kid, I'd have gotten a flight attendant involved immediately. If that didn't help ... well, the kid's foot could get accidentally broken. :)

Greg, I don't wish in any way to detract from your marvellous posts, as they're giving us all a valuable insight into what might best be described as the inevitable 'shakedown' phase of any cruise ship's existence. As a recent convert to this site, though, I was wondering if there's any history of 'live from' threads from inaugural HAL sailings that I and others could read to gain a comparative view of how your current woes stack up against what's gone before. In particular, I'm wondering whether HAL really haven't learned from previous experiences, or whether the current teething problems are just that - teething problems - associated with getting a new team all singing off the same hymn sheet.
As a couple of examples, your description of the 'breakfast bottleneck' on the Eurodam is something I experienced last year on the Ryndam, so I'd perhaps be a little reticent to lay the blame for such crowds on the presence of the cabanas, as my guess is it's just a numbers issue, and that over time the 'breakfast rush' will spread out a little such that everyone manages to get seated. I may be completely wrong of course! (wouldn't be the first time, and for sure I'm not there to observe directly!). One other thought occured to me too - are the 'Canaletto' tables available for breakfasting lido diners, or are they permanently 'cordoned off'?
Anyway - let me say again that I'm more than a little grateful for all the hard work that you, Brian, Copper et al are putting in on our behalf, and that I loved the 'forward/aft' picture. Are all the signs like that, or was this just a one-off?

Loving the posts and pictures! Thank you so much for doing this. I'm sure the service will become better over the course of your cruise, at least I hope they will come up to the level we all love about HAL.
Interesting to hear that people are "dressing". Do you feel it's because it's an inaugural cruise or because there are more European's on board?

Breakfast in the Main Dining Room:
Given the disaster that breakfast was on our first morning I decided to try the Main Dining Room for breakfast this morning. It was a much better choice. The atmosphere was quiet, the people interesting, the staff attentive, and the food was excellent. Sometimes the Main Dining Room food selections at breakfast leave something to be desired, but this time they turned out quite nice. Given how horrible the Lido was yesterday, I'm seriously considering trying breakfast in the Main Dining room on most of the next 20 mornings. Sadly, I had to go alone ... Christopher was still sawing logs when I got up, and only barely moved as I got showered, dressed, and left. I think he had too much to drink last night ... he usually sleeps late after such evenings.
As a result, I enjoyed my meal and my conversation with a nice couple from Northern Wales. When we found out where each other was from, the lady of the couple began the conversation with: "Happy Independence Day to you!" And my reply was: "My condolences on your loss." :D It was a very pleasant meal.
Odds and Ends:
After breakfast I made my way all the way forward and up to the Crows Nest for Team Trivia with Mary Ellen, Karl, Christopher, and Grumpy and Slinky. We didn't win, but we did ok -- 9 out of 15 -- and the questions were VERY hard.
Weather is mixed today. We began this morning with heavy fog and light rain, plus an overcast sky. The seas were very choppy and the ship had quite a bit of motion as a result. As breakfast progressed the weather cleared up nicely, and the sun finally came out during team trivia, making for a very lovely day. However, as I'm writing this I've noticed that the sun has moved behind clouds again. The weather forcast on the Scan Channel says that it should be partly-cloudy all day today, with occasional showers. And, from a glance at the horizon, that seems to be right.
This afternoon they're holding a July 4th Party by the pool amidships beginning at 12 noon and going until 3 pm. They say this is to celebrate the "America" in "Holland America Line." I heard a lot of grumbling among the germans about this, however ... they're not happy that the main dinnig room isn't going to be open for lunch; and, for that matter, neither am I.
Several of the lounges have been closed, off-and-on, over the past 2 days for various events. We've got a huge number of Travel Agents aboard, and the HAL staff seems to be focusing their attentions on them and ignoring us. In Hamburg yesterday about 500 German TAs came aboard for the day, had meetings with HAL staff, toured the ship, ate dinner in the Main Dining Room, and took up premium space in the bars and lounges. Even though half the ship was off doing things in the Hamburg nightlife, the ship was crowded and understaffed as a good percentage of the crew had been given the night off.
More Odds, less Ends:
Last night we had a great time. As my photos will show and as I've already shared, after dinner and the fireworks show we went to the Northern lights and danced until about 1 am. The redesign of the Disco makes for a better arrangement, however the sitting arrangements simply aren't as nice. However, as can be seen in the photos, each sitting-area has a stone-top table in the middle onto which projectors cast the image from the camera which is focused upon the dance floor. It's a nice, fun, touch. Having fun, as they often do, Scotty and Brian jumped up on one of the tables and started to dance! Scotty also took Mary Ellen out on to the floor -- with Karl's permission, of course -- to dance some. I also joined in or the fun and things finally got to moving -- along with the ship -- at about 12:45 am.
I've spent a little time in the Explorations Cafe -- the Starboard side of the Crows Nest -- and I'm not especially impressed. it's nice, but it's very crowded. I preferred the Explorations Cafe on the Noordam and on the S and R ships, where the room is large enough for the influx of passengers and the location makes it more central to the rest of the evening activities. Sadly, something similar regarding size could be said about many of the public rooms aboard the Euroam. They all appear to be a little bit smaller than on the Vistas, and with an expansion in the passenger-complement this is a troubling development. Yes, I know ... the square-footage per-passenger isn't supposed to be appreciably less, but it sure feels and looks like such is the case; particularly when it comes to dealing with the crowds. Of the complaints I've overheard from many is that they're having to line up for everything. While a small amount of lining up is always going to be necessary, some o these lines are way too long.
Looking back over what I've written I know it looks like I've just been complaining about everything, and it is true that there are some aspects to this ship that I just don't like. However, there are many elements that I do like. For instance, even though much of a decor is not like HAL's standard on the rest of the ships, it nevertheless has that "HAL-esque" feel to it -- slightly funky, modern European, with an "Old World" Charm Twist. I like that, for the most part, and hence the decor has really grown on me. Likewise, I must say that the crew is excellent and that the level of service has been, considering the problems and the overcrowding, quite good. Yes, sometimes the service rate lags a bit behind what it ought to be, but I can chalk that up to adjustments to working together. Thus far I've seen about a dozen staff members whom I know from prior cruises on HAL ... they've long been the "Best of the best," so it's not surprising to find them here, helping the new ship get "up to speed."

Thanks for the photos - I love the tables in the Northern Lights ... our son saw lots of them when he lived in Japan, but he didn't get pictures of them.
The Lido Deck Cabanas look like "Arabian Nights At Sea" - I wonder how long they'll be in existence?

Thanks for the updates & the photos, Greg!
I had a thought while reading your post: perhaps there's more people booked on this short 3-day 'preview' cruise than on the first 'real' cruise (ie-upper & lower berths filled)? That certainly would explain the crowds being what they are.

Greg, Thank you so much for the great photos and wonderful descriptions of this fabulous adventure. The ship does look beautuful and my guess is it will only take a few days to work out the kinks. I sailed with you and Brian, etc. on the Noordam inaugrual and it was just perfect. It makes me wonder why the Noordam went out with no glitches whatsoever, and the Eurodam is experiencing what seems like lots of little problems. Anyway, hope all of the CC'ers on board have a marvelous cruise and I look forward to all of the "live from" posts.
PS How's the casino treating you?

Those cabanas seem to be a huge blunder on HAL's part...taking up so much valuable space if they continue to go unused. Maybe HAL is counting on pax booking them in the Caribbean

[B]Those cabanas are horrid IMO
I can't imagine anyone would want to spend a day in one.
That valuable deck space is needed for better use.....like a place to eat one's breakfast or lunch. Are there no tables and chairs around Lido pool now? If one goes to the taco bar late afternoon, where can you sit and eat your snack? Do you have to go into Lido?
I have no problem with them being creative trying to find new revenue streams. I realize they have to but this is one of the worst ideas I've seen.

I may be wrong, Sail, but I think the cabanas line one side of the Lido pool...and there are tables and chairs on the other. Seems as though I saw a photo posted showing the tables/chairs.
In any case, if they're an eyesore if you ask me! I don't mind the ones on the observation deck because they're out of the way of traffic.
Being roped off isn't very welcoming either. To think Greg was booted from them the other day when he couldn't find another place to sit and eat his breakfast is not good customer relations.
I, for one, hope those in the Lido are short-lived.

Thanks, RevNeal, for all the time you are spending posting about the Eurodam. I have to say, though, that I am seriously reconsidering booking this ship for March 2009. One reason is the lack of seating in the Lido restaurant. I would think that is something that can't be easily changed. Access to Lido seating at breakfast and lunch is important to me. Has the situation gotten any better in the Lido? Thanks again for all the posts!

Are there no tables and chairs around Lido pool now? If one goes to the taco bar late afternoon, where can you sit and eat your snack? There's normal tables and chairs on the starboard side. (Saw them in dellas1000's pics)
I have no problem with them being creative trying to find new revenue streams. I realize they have to but this is one of the worst ideas I've seen. How much revenue are these things things bringing in? I think I saw that you can rent one for $199 per week? That's $1592 /wk for the whole bunch ... that's $0.76 per passenger per week. I'll be happy to pay an extra $0.76 per week to see them scrapped!! Heck, I'll pay $2 per week!! :D :D
(I don't care about those up in the "Retreat" on the Observation deck ... they won't affect me at all!)
