Hi, I'm in the "last minute question" mode and just have one regarding Barbados....we're planning on spending our day at the Boatyard and many people have commented that it's best to get out of the Port area before getting a cab. My question is this: approximately how far do you have to go to get out of the port area? I believe there is a roundabout just past the Poiceman/Customs area that we'll want to get our cab at. I've heard of some people taking a cab inside the Port area to get to a cab outside the Port area...is it really that far or is it a short walk (10-15 min, etc.)? Also, about how much does it cost to get to the Boatyard...and is it per cab or per person? (I realize I've exceeded my "one question only" comment...sorry:o )

Thanks in advance!

I believe there is a roundabout just past the Policeman/Customs area that we'll want to get our cab at. ===> That is correct!
I've heard of some people taking a cab inside the Port area to get to a cab outside the Port area... ===> Nonsense!!
is it really that far or is it a short walk (10-15 min, etc.)? ===> More like 5..

Also, about how much does it cost to get to the Boatyard...and is it per cab or per person? From the Barbados Cruise Terminal to the Port's Security Gatehouse is no more than about 300 yds.

The shark-taxis you want to avoid are immediately INside of that Gatehouse
the human-taxis are immediately OUTside of that Gatehouse
as is the roundabout with the big shade-tree at its center
under which the guys hang out waiting for you!

If you have Google Earth on your computer, fire it up and have a look!
The area is quite clear of cloud and detail/resolution is decent
although not pin-sharp like it is in some places.

I'm no authority on taxi fares in Barbados, since I have my own car
but from what I read on this Barbados forum
I see taxi fares to the Boatyard/Lobster Alive area(right next door to each other)
quoted around $3-5 per person, 'depending'...

Our group just got back a couple of weeks ago and we went to the boatyard while in Barbados. We went right outside the gate to get a couple of vans. We had 21 people with us. Make sure you ask the price up front. The first guy trying to get business said it would be $2 per person and when we went to the driver he said $3. He wouldn't change it but I didn't think that $3 was terribly bad. The boatyard was really cool. The beach and water there are incredible.

Thanks to you both! We'll walk the 300 yds past the sharks and pay our $2+ pp!:)

And appreciate the good word on the Boatyard...we've got a bunch going so we wanted something lively.

We are leaving in 5 days for our cruise. We have nevr been to Barbados and wondered what the difference is in getting a taxi inside the gat versus outside the gate? How far is the walk to "outside" the gate? Will I know which way to go to get out of the gate? Silly questions, but I really want to make sure I know what I'm doing. If it were just my husband and I, I wouldn't be as concerned, but we will have our 3 young girls. Just want to look like and know what I'm doing!

It's about 300 yds to get outside the gate...and you can't miss it. We paid $5 pp (there were 7 of us) to get to the Boatyard. BTW, we told the driver where we wanted to go and he still tried to get us to go somewhere else...said the water/beach/etc. weren't nice...we told him that we had done our research and wanted to go to the Boatyard and he didn't give us any more problems. (Funny that we ran into this issue outside the gate, as that is the reason others have said to avoid those INside the gate...)

PS...have a GREAT cruise!

..said the water/beach/etc. weren't nice..
..we told him that we had done our research and wanted to go to the Boatyard and he didn't give us any more problems. Next time that happens, hit him back on a 'National Pride' level
by informing him there's no such thing as a not-nice beach on the island of Barbados
and he darned well knows that, too!!

That oughta floor him!

Good point! I should have said that...honestly, I was a bit surprised that I even ran into this issue since we had made a specific point to avoid it. Regardless, we had a wonderful time...and you're right...the beach we saw in Barbados was amazing!....definitely an island we would make a land trip to!

Hi, what and where is the Boatyard? Is it a beach?Boatyard is a kinda beach-club hangout
just the other side of Bridgetown to where your ship is docked
-a quick cab ride away!

They charge $15 to get in, and I think that gets you a chair, umbrella maybe 1 drink
and a free ride back to the ship when your day is done!

It's a deal most people snap up, and they get very few complaints other than the music might be too loud
-so you disappear down the beach a ways, until it fades to your satisfaction.

Right next door is Lobster Alive...
..the beach(Carlisle Bay) is great although it's only 2 miles long,sorry..:)

(Shhh..don't tell anyone but the beach is free...you can access it via Lobster Alive
where you can also get a beach chair and umbrellas and stuff -and a shower)

See my pics of the area by clicking on URL..

and then clicking on the links that say Carlisle Bay and Lobster Alive...
see if you see anything you like?

This is Carlisle Bay, about a mile up the beach from Boatyard

..and these are the lobsters awaiting you -for Lunch-
next door at Lobster Alive

and this is how Carlisle Bay might look from the stern of your ship
- it's that thin strand of white in the distance

Definately Lobster Alive. Just 100 feet to the left of the Dockyard entrance. Loved it!:D
