For all of you cruise ship techies out there -- HAL's Oosterdam is the star of an article on cruise ship propulsion in the July 2008 issue of Scientific American -- title of the article is "Nimble Skyscrapers at Sea" -- a link to the article:

http://www.sciam.com/article.cfm?id=cruise-ships

some interesting tidbits from the article include fuel consumption stats:
90 gallons of fuel oil consumed per mile at moderate speeds
150 gallons of fuel oil consumed per mile in head winds and swells

Thanks for the article, good, quick read. We leave for the Oosterdam in just a couple of weeks.

Need we wonder why HAL had to assess a fuel surcharge?? Talk about a fuel bill!

Interesting reading, and thank you for posting the link!

I was on the Oosterdam last week and love that ship! We had a wonderful cruise, and I now understand the loyalty and affection that many on this forum have for HAL. We're already planning our next cruise, and it will be on one of those "dam" ships, possibly the Oosterdam again.

Near the end of our cruise we attended a Q & A session with Capt. Arjen van der Loo. He spoke to us about the ship, and more specifically about using the bow thrusters to assist in maneuvering the "O" through the dense ice around the Hubbard Glacier. He also mentioned having to run the ship's engines at top speed to make up for lost time due to a passenger's late arrival back to the ship in Ketchikan.... I can only imagine the fuel bill!!

And we think we have sticker shock when we pull in to refuel!
