Does anyone know if smoking is allowed on port or starboard on the lower promenade deck on HAL ships?

The last time I checked (Feb 08), yes to both.

Smoking is allowed outside on all decks and there is no "side" for smoking ( at least on the S&R class) , ashtrays are hung on the railings throughout.

Yes, and yes.

Smok'em if ya got 'em. The smoking light is lit.

As per "regs", tossing of butts overboard is disallowed.

Bon Voyage & Good Health!

There is a 'smoking side' at Aft Pool but I don't remember which is which. On wrap around Lower Promendade, I think smoking is permitted all the way around.

Typically on the port side from my experience, but the restriction is for the covered area. Outside the covered area, smoking is permitted, so smoking is permitted around the aft pool. Smoking is also permitted at the Ocean Bar which is (from my experience) located on the starboard side under the covered area. Doesn't make sense to me, but that's the way it be.

We have sailed on many S&R class ships and have never seen smoking restricted outside around the aft pool. In point of fact our last 30 day cruise the smokers took over the entire table areas around the aft pool and spent the entire day there more often than not. If they wanted to sit comfortably and smoke outside this was about the only place they could.
The same thing behind the Lido area outside, smoking both sides no restrictions.

On the R and S class ships -- we have seen people smoking everywhere on the aft deck -- no restrictions.

On the Vista class ships -- same thing -- the people just move the ash trays to suit themselves and no one says anything different.

Exactly. You see people smoking all over at aft pool but only one side is supposed to be smoking. They take ashtrays from wherever they find them and use them wherever they wish.

For the most part, it isn't bothersome unless uyou get so unlucky as to have a smoke fiend seated beside you in what is supposed to be the non-smoking side.

Good luck.

It seems that things might vary from ship to ship then. On my last 2 cruises (Oct. 07, Feb 08, both R classes), the smoking section was on the port side and smokers (other than those at the Ocean bar) were asked to find seating on the port side or to remove themselves from the covered starboard area. On my Dec 06 cruise (S class) the smoking areas were more liberal, smoking was allowed anywhere on the aft deck and also in the inside pool area on the port side of Lido bar within the bar itself as well as to the edge of the inside pool at the tables. Also on the Dec 06 cruise, there were few restrictions on smoking areas within the bars inside the ship.

I have seen the servers ask a passenger to move to the "designated" smoking area. Unfortunately, unlike the designated tables and areas in the inside bars, there isn't a good demarkation of where the smoking areas are around the aft pool. From what I understand, smoking is permitted around the aft pool in any of the uncovered areas and restrictions only exist on the starboard covered areas other than the Ocean bar.

On our last cruise in May, we only saw one person smoking on the Promenade deck; most of us smokers were by the ashtrays on 4 of the tables by the aft deck pool. Didn't see anyone smoking anywhere else on deck.

The ships have gone to no smoking permitted at Lido Pool even at the bar. Those tables that used to have smoking (just outside Lido) are now non-smoking. (But I have seen a few exceptions made a few times in the recent past.)
