The largest cruise company in the world.
Carnival Cruise Lines, Holland America Line, Princess Cruises and Seabourn Cruise Line in North America; P&O Cruises, Cunard Line and Ocean Village in the United Kingdom; AIDA in Germany; Costa Cruises in southern Europe; Iberocruceros in Spain; and P&O Cruises in Australia.

Yes, Holland America, along with Princess, Cunard and quite a few other cruise lines are owned by Carnival.

Edited - I was not able to view the other answers before I posted. Forgive the repetition.

Yep; I'm wondering why the intro - it is so and CCL also owns the upscale Windstar and luxury line Seaborn  Haven't had the pleasure of cruising those two, but have loved Princess, Holland America and Cunard along with CCL, NCL, RCL and X - Costa - not so much.

Have you ever cruised CCL?

Carnival no longer owns Windstar. It was sold.

I have heard horror stories from friends that have gone on Carnival and I had heard the same for Princess since CCL took them over. I had wanted to try Holland because their website makes them look like "old days" of cruising. Aparently they may own...but not necessarily run them the same as CCL.

Each division is ran by separate management. We did HAL in 2005 and found it to be a good product. Of course, in these difficult times for the travel industry there are lots of little changes going on constantly. However, if you are switching from RCI you will notice the differences between them, but not like the HAL long term sailors that are unhappy with the changes in their specific product.

I think passenger attitude has more to do with enjoyment of the cruise than the cruiseline management. JMHO

And since I LOVE Classical music it appears they have more than Celebrity and more much more than RCCL, but the classical affecianados are not the ones RCCL or the X are going for but seems HAL does.

"Devils on the Deep Blue Sea." Great book to learn the history of American cruising. Beware; it could scare you off any and all Lines. But, to your question, Carnival has historically left its subsidiaries autonomous whenever possible, with the logic that, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. Only poor performers earn Mickey's ire and unwanted attention.

On our sailing they did have a classical pianist playing music for the evening show, another night they had a 4 piece string group playing classical music.

It was fine, not the Vienna philharmonic, but not bad.

That is the neat thing about chamber orchestras is they are designed to be tucked away in the corner and heard.

Carnival Cruise Lines is different than Carnival Corporation ... as much as some would like to bash lines for having anything to do with Carnival ... they are the ones with the huge pockets. "Devils on the Deep Blue Sea" was mentioned earlier ... and it is quite an interesting read about the start of modern cruising, and I think it really is interesting to see how Carnival has been able to become the largest and wealthiest.

I cruised on HAL's Oosterdam back in March. My first with this line. Overall a nice cruise but I did not see premium that some make it out to be. Yes the food was slightly better than what I have had on RCI but the service was the same and the ship reminded me of a Carnival ship decor wise. Tacky. It made me appreciate Royal Caribbean that much more. Would I cruise HAL again? Yes but not my first choice.

The only decor I have seen on Carnival has been on the TV Spots and on the Travel Channel. It reminds me of a Las Vegas Casino...too many purples.

Actually, I was thinking on the way to work this morning...love taking the bus...can do other things besides sit in 1 1/2 hour traffic...I may have to give these other lines a try and see how I stress on I like them. Some people love the so called booze cruise LA-Ensenada 3 nts...after I did one, I don't care for them. I may love Princess other hate Princess, I may hate Carnival other love Carnival, etc. etc.

Apollo Management has a significant and common interest in NCL and Oceania.

Carnival, RCL and Apollo are owned by the public and mutual funds hold substantial positions. Pension plans, 401K, non qualified retirement plans and individuals, people like you and me, own shares in the mutual funds and demand ( lately pray for) a decent return on our investment. So yeah, it's all about the money.

HAL has the ambiance many lines lack. Fresh flowers throughout, few PA announcements, no herd atmosphere, real towels in the public restrooms, very little nickel-diming, an old ocean liner feel rather than a floating resort.
Many of us prefer the S and R class (smaller) HAL ships because this feeling is more prevalent on the older ships.
Quiet refinement, excellent service, heavenly bedding, friendly smiling crew.

Majestic America bought Windstar about 2 years ago. They are doing great with those ships....don't know about the River Boats?

Carnival Corporation and Micky Arison fought very hard with RCI for the purchase of Princess. It was a long, hard fight and Carnival won.

If Carnival had not bought HAL all those years ago, it is likely there would be no HAL today. The line was out of money and it was Carnival who infused the money that ultimately built Statendam and all the subsequent ships since the first of the "S" Class ships.

And the rest, as they say, is history.

When we were cruising Princess in Alaska in 1989 we had just heard that Carnival bought Holland America.

And guess what -- just a few months before that Princess bought Sitmar!! We were originally to have done our Alaskan cruise on Sitmar.

And guess who now owns Princess??

Carnival!!

RCI is a brand of Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd., with 21 ships in service. Therefore RCCL is the parent corporation and RCI a subsidiary. RCCL also operates (as you noted, but for RCI) Celebrity Cruises, Pullmantur Cruises, Azamara Cruises. RCCL has a stake in Island Cruises.

Unlike CCL's relatively "Hands Off" approach to it's separate brands, RCI has run X (and now Az) very much in the style of RCCL - much to the detriment of X.

I suppose if "Dutch Maritime History" could be considered a "theme" worthy of Joe Farcus' attention...

...but I suspect if that were the case he'd have installed dozens of little windmills hanging from the ceiling of a 10-deck high atrium, a showroom done in all white with little blue handpainted flowers everywhere, dozens of multicolored neon tulips in the Lido, and dining room chairs shaped like wooden shoes.

No, you will likely not be the youngest, but certainly amoung the younger of the passenger component. If you're looking for a less rowdy group, HAL is probably right for you. Give it a try. Most who do, never look back!

From what I am hearing, I think this is the best move. We are already booked on RCCL next year to Alaska. I am Platinum with RCCL and once we reach Diamond I was going to try Celebrity next. I think for our 2010 cruise I will HAVE to give HAL a try. What I like from what I have seen on HAL's website is a basic outside stateroom comes with a tub where as with RCCL you have to book a Junior Suite and higher to get a tub.

Royal Caribbean has Royal Caribbean, Celebrity and Azamara, plus a few brand "names" they've acquired through the years but are not using, like Admiral and some others.
