My friends sailed to Alaska on the Veendam and had a drink called "Wang Wang", but no one seems to know what goes into this.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

Isn`t this the drink that contains Pisang, an Indonesian liquor? I know I`ve had them on several occasions, and I know they were potent, but for the life of me can`t remember exactly what is in them....probably because they were so potent!!!.....jean

Looked it up on Google and it's not even listed. May be special to HAL.

Like Jean, do know they are very potent, though I have never tried them. A gal on one of our cruises many years ago tried several one evening. Need I say more. :D

Wangwang is similar to a Long Island Tea,except made with fruit juice instead of sour mix.

Thanks! What goes into a Wang Wang? I really got to know
I drunk 'em in Alaska, with a weathered Eskimo
And I him asked way back then just what did he call that drink?
And the Indian said, "Wang Wang!" a gived a little wink.
So we drank 'em 'til the sun went down and the humpbacks went a'deep
And I stumbled back aboard the ship and fell myself to sleep

And my dreams were sweet and peaceful and I woke up with a grin
And I started thinkin' I might like to go ashore agin
And find my friend ask him how make mix a Wang Wang right
But lookin' out the porthole there was nary land in sight

And every day for 30 years I've searched the seven seas
For how to make a Wang Wang, good as in my memories.
What goes into a Wang Wang?, I really got to know
The way to make a Wang Wang that would please a person so

I asked a feller yesterday if the Wang Wang rang a bell
And much to my surprise he said he knew it very well
He remembered drinking Wang Wangs, lord, some 30 years ago
With a buddy he had just met, and they sat there in the snow

Listenen' to the humpbacks 'til the sky was fading black
And his buddy went aboard a ship and never did come back
And my heart was thumping fearsome and I hugged the feller so
I'd found the guy who mixed me up those Wang Wangs long ago

So tell me what was in 'em? I asked him with a grin
Was it whisky rum and apples and a little bit of gin?
He said he'd tell the secret if I'd never tell a soul
But then he stumbled overboard - this poem's getting old

Our first cruise was on the Ryndam about 10 years ago. We ended up meeting a great bunch of people on our table. We all wang wanged all week, had lots of laughs got told off for running, and I recall it was all white liquor that that they served ie. vodka , gin, rum tequila, that went into the drink a little bit of this and a little bit of that. I think its a HAL special drink, best bargain they ever had.

Hello Everyone!

Last November on our Veendam cruise, my wife and I could always be found each evening in the Piano Bar being entertained by the great J.P. Nadeau. (Does anybody know if he is still with HAL?) This is where I was introduced to the "Wang-Wang" Oh-h-h-h, boy!!

I had posted a long review of the trip upon our return (It got lost when the new board came into being) and my experience with this very potent drink.

As I remember (or as I was told), on the night we left Cozumel heading back to Tampa I drank 6 or 7 in one sitting. The bar staff was very impressed! I asked what was in it - they said everything and that it was a special HAL drink. I asked what was the real "kicker" in it and they said RYE! No wonder I was sick for a day and a half!!

Waiting for our next HAL cruise 12/5 on the "O" to the Eastern Caribbean - and for this trip I don't think I will repeat that 1/2 dozen or so Wang-Wang stunt again! Well....maybe just "one" for old times! They are pretty good!

(As a side note, thanks to all of you for your concern and continued good thoughts and prayers for all of us being effected by this awful hurricane season.)

Mike and Christy, I also remember Jean-Paul from the piano bar on the Veendam and have been wondering if he is still around. His rendition of Danny Boy was great....jean

Thanks Roadguy - and I will return the favor (if you can call it that!)

A few months before our last HAL cruise, one of the folks on this board by the name of "Scruiser" put together the "Unofficial Veendam Cruise Critic Group" for a sail away get together and toast to a great cruise. I brought Mardi Gras beads from New Orleans for all the "members." We met at the Dolphin Bar and had a great time. That particular thread lasted a long time and we had many excited cruisers involved. We had a blast!

Roadguy, maybe we can put something together again for this cruise if there is interest - something like "The Unofficial Oosterdam Cruise Critic Wang-Wang Gang" (UOCCWWG) I will go over to the HAL roll call boards and post this.

Jean - since you remember J. P. - by any chance where you on the Veendam cruise the first week or so in November - that time in Cozumel when a freak storm came in causing an NCL ship to break it's moorings and slam into the stern of the Veendam?!?! Everything was OK but that incident helped in my decision to engage in my own personal Wang-Wang Festival that evening!

Ah-h-h, the waves from the storm, the waves from the Wang-Wangs - the waves.....the Wang-Wangs...the waves....the waves...........

Also, thanks for any info anyone may have on the whereabouts of JP Nadeau. If he is working any of the HAL ships Piano Bars - don't miss him! Besides doing all the favorites, he has written some great tunes of his own. Request a song he wrote called "I Know I Know It" and be prepared for some tough but fun Name That Tune trivia later in the week!

In the meantime - our thoughts and continued prayers go out to all of us, and especially to the people, the pets and the other animals in harms way in Florida during this hurricane season -

ENOUGH ALREADY!!

Mike and Christy,

DW(Gwynnclaire) posted a thread on the rollcall for this cruise.Doesn't seem like there will be many of Us.

I found the thread and posted a message - it would be great if we could put together a group for a sail away toast! I hope there will be some interest and that more cruisers will join the list.

I think that many of us (I know that my wife and I are going nuts) have our focus on this awful hurricane season and the impact it is having on so many. This is like a bad - a very bad horror movie....However, once the tropics start to cool down I think the Roll Call Board and postings for our cruise will heat up.

There is still a little over two months to go and for now, we have been lucky and blessed. Our hearts continue to go out to our friends in Florida and Alabama - and while "Ivan" did decide to become a sequel playing close to our area - it will not be anywhere as bad as when it first appeared and nothing now compared to what has been going on and on.

All I can say is that I am REALLY looking forward to the cruise and having that Wang-Wang!!! (And now I am thinking maybe TWO!)

Hi there, I just wanted to let you know that I have just been confirmed on
the DAWN Princess out of Vancouver for the Alaska season, starting on the
23rd until mid- September. This will be a good time. Best time for Alaska is
Aug-Sept. June and July are usually raining, but then again, when it rains,
the glaciers are BLUE! I hope you are well and that we can see each other
again sometime. I'll keep you in the loop. Toodles, JP

We spent many great nights in the piano bar on Maasdam with JP in Feb.
This was a e-mail he sent from last may...
