We're in the process of booking a 38-nite Collector's Voyage on the Amsterdam for March/April '09. Just today I checked the HAL site & learned that the ship is scheduled for drydock immediately after we disembark & will be "under construction" for 2 weeks.
So now I'm a tad concerned. What condition is the Amsterdam in now? Is she in obvious need of repair? Is this a major refurbish or a little TLC? Would the crew be disengaged knowing that the ship is headed to drydock? Can anyone tell me what to expect? Many thanks!

I asked this same question at the time I booked (early May) because I'm booked on the cruise right after the drydock, all my TA knew at that time was that there were no changes planned for any of the staterooms.
I thought for sure that if there was anyplace to find out the details, this would be it, unfortunately that has not come to pass. However, I've gotten the impression that all ships have these periodic drydocks for maintenance that can't be done while the ship is in operation, like below the waterline for instance.
Also, a few of the long-time members of cruisecritic have recently sailed on the Amsterdam, LaffnVegas to name one and by all accounts the ship is in excellent shape.

The Westerdam was in dry dock in the spring of 2007 - thus she is not due for another one any time soon.

Appreciate these comments WaStateBG. I've read all the recent reviews of the Amsterdam & the ship does get thumbs-up. So that's reassuring. I've also e-mailed HAL asking about the drydock & I'll post their response when/if I get one (of course I'm not holding my breath):p

I know this was dicussed several months back but I haven't been able to find the original thread. HAL is scheduled to redesign parts the S Class ships throughout 2009. Maasdam is scheduled for dry docking January 09. Does anyone know the extent that the planned changes are to be?

While I agree with what you say KK I just wonder why the Zuiderdam that was just in dry dock this year would be returning for what looks like a month the beginning of 2010:confused: Yet, they do not show any time for the Westerdam coming up.

Rumor has it that the aft pool is to be moved up to Lido Deck, and Navigation Deck will be filled in with additional cabins.
If this is true, and if there's no additional public space, it could mean crowding in the Lido and dining rooms when everyone needs to eat in a short time frame.

Looking back at the 2009 schedule Maasdam is scheduled for a Jan. 9th 14 day caribbean and another 14 caribbean Jan. 30th. The down time in between would only leave 6 days. Unless one or both are cancelled I don't see how much they can accomplish in terms of major construction in that time.

HAL responded to my e-mail asking about the April '09 scheduled drydock of the Amsterdam with the following:
Thank you for your inquiry. In response to your email, every year each ship goes into dry-dock a couple of times, to either have improvements and upgrades done. This is not always a bad thing. Most of the time it is simply to update the ship, chances are that this dry-dock will be just for regular scheduled maintenance. The ms Amsterdam is in great condition currently and will be setting sail in mid September on our Grand Asia and Australia cruise for 65 days so she will need to be in peak shape for this voyage.
Thank you again for your inquiry, and please let us know if you have any further questions or concerns regarding your future cruise with Holland America Line.
Nothing specific here - except that the ship will be in great shape for the upcoming Grand Asia & Australia Voyage. We board 4 months after that cruise ends, so here's hoping.....:)

We were on the Amsterdam for 64 days last fall and she was in great shape. they actually recovered some of the furniture in the Explorer's lounge while we were in transit. I didn't think it was that shabby in the first place but nice to know they keep on top of things.

Firstly, sometimes these "under constructions" are "wet docks" not "dry docks." A Dry dock is where they take the ship out of the water so they can do major construction work and equipment repair and replace and can paint the underside, repair the screw, etc. A wet dock is where they don't need to do engineering work but do want to swap out carpets, some furniture, do some light internal construction, replace some electrical equipment, windows, etc. Wet docks are usually shorter than Dry docks.

Looks like the Rotterdam will be going in for a Dry dock immediately after our crossing during the first half of November 2009.

Perhaps she's going to be in Wet dock for a week or two in January, rather than Dry dock for most of the month? I don't know. From what we've seen in the past, HAL's schedule is more fluid than we expect. Still ... January 2009 is not too long from now; one would think they'd have something like this locked down.

They are making my heart go pitter patter. Is there a chance they are not going to make all those changes to 'my' :) gorgeous Maasdam?
Those are nice cruises and maybe they have chosen to either delay or cancel messing with Maasdam???

Perhaps it's an economy issue? HAL may not be able to afford it right now, given economic projections, etc. Who knows?
Those ARE nice sailings ... I'd love to take one, but can't ... not with the Noordam Good Nuts Cruise on Jan 23rd.

If that's the case, it isn't likely they can be doing the heavy metal work we have heard about.
I think our aft pool has been rescued at least for the short term???
Maybe?
Could they possibly extend Navigation Deck aft to add all those cabins, remove the escalator and add cabins in that area, move Hotel Manager, Culinary Ops and Bar Managers' Offices, and do whatever they plan to do to aft pool on Lido Deck in a brief wet dock.
The plans for aft pool make me VERY uneasy but I think we've bought at least a brief reprieve. Makes me want to book another Maasdam cruise for after our December one.

From what I've been told in the past a Wet Dock service includes such things as "cosmetic upgrades," interior fixture repairs, sewage flush and recharge, computer and electrical system upgrades. Major work is usually not done in a Wet dock, and the raising of the pool deck up to the level o the Lido Deck qualifies as MAJOR work.
This is the first I'd heard of the removal of the escalators. What would be the purpose ... there wouldn't be any space recovered for more cabins in such a modification. At least, I can't see where such would be the case.

They are taking the space where Hotel Manager, Culinary Operations Manager and Bar Manager have their offices and escalator and putting more cabins......... Or Were! ???
