Can anyone help with Tortola shore excursions. We are planning an excursion and would like to know a little about the 2 that are our in the finals. We would like opinion the Sea & see and North Shore & Pussers landing. Do these leave in the morning or the afternoon, what did you like about it (just briefly) Thanks for the info. Ben

Ben .... In the "Book Shore Excursions" following the tour description you'll see the word "Time" -- click that for the excrusion time/times. It's very small -- missed it also when I first looked.
We love Tortola! Hope you have a wonderful trip!
Happy Sailing! OCruisers :)

We found hiring a cab to tour the island was much better than the organized trips. Usually you can partner with a few other passengers to share the cost. A great taxi driver took five of us for a three hour tour for $20 each (it was a nice van-type cab). Just go to the taxi stand and start asking cruisers if they want to share a ride. By the way, tours on Tortola aren't for the weak of heart...they pass on curves there (our cabbie didn't...but cars coming in the opposite direction did!)...and it isn't unusual to find a cow or goat in the middle of the road! We took the snorkeling excursion in the morning...came back at lunch time...showered and ate...and then had time for the 3-hour island tour by cab...so you don't need to choose! Do them BOTH! Enjoy...it's a beautiful island. Cass

We rent a local power boat and captain and spend the day exploring islands and going to pristine beaches. Try to find another couple or two to share with you. It is fantastic and so personalized to what you like to do - whether swim, snorkel, etc and you get to see it all.
If you can find someone to share - it really isn't that much more expensive that paying for two "ship" excursions, and it is so private and uncrowded.
We will be doing this again on the Vaandam 11/27 sailing. Can't wait. Let me know if you are looking for a boat, and I can give you who I use. I make arrangements in advance and they pick us up at the cruise dock.

We didn't do any of the ship's excursion's on Tortola - but chose to visit Virgin Gorda on our own. It was worth it.
Search for my very long review from our 7/31 sailing for more details (just search for all posts by me til you find the review)

Wow, great review. Can I ask you something? I know you brought you own snorkel gear but can you rent it at the baths?

Hi,
I did the HAL sponsored tour of Virgin Gorda and the baths on my last trip. The baths at Virgin Gorda are one of the most memorable places you can visit. I can't remember if they rented snorkel gear. I always bring my own as well. I know there is a regular ferry that goes from Road Town to Virgin Gorda, so you can do this same excursion on your own as well.
If you just want to tour Tortolla, take a taxi tour. It will be cheaper. In one 8:00 AM - 6:00 PM day at Tortolla, I did the HAL tour of the baths at Virgin Gorda a taxi tour of Tortolla (including an hour at Cane Garden Bay, which is absolutely beautiful as well) and spent about an hour or so walking around downtown road town before boarding the ship. The only thing I did not do on my day in Tortolla was eat. This was very amusing when dinner time rolled around and I told the waiter on the ship I was absolutely starving because I had not eaten all day. He looked at me like I was from another planet and said "This is a cruise....what do you mean you have not eaten all day?!?!". :->
Tortolla is beautiful and it has been one of my favorite ports so far. Enjoy your day.

Thanks. There is a little bar and food shop on the beach at the baths. I am 99% sure I saw them renting snorkel gear there

Our experience at Tortola 3 weeks ago was ruined by the fringes of Hurricane Frances. We had a Virgin Gorda excursion planned and it was cancelled due to rough seas and rain. Frankly, I wish we hadn't left the ship there...we took a taxi over to Pusser's landing and when we arrived everything was boarded up. Bummer. Better luck next time for us.
