Not only does the VH have just a shower, there are other problems: they are right over the show lounge (can be noisy), are very far forward (can be bouncy), and have steel-wall railings (no view except sky when seated on the verandah). The good news is that since there are only four on the ship, with a guarantee there's an excellent chance of being upgraded to a much better cabin.
If you upgraded them to a VF guarantee they still could end up with all of the same four problems - or they may be lucky enough to get a VF on deck 5 without any of them - or they may be even luckier and get an upgrade above VF.
IMO, if you can possibly afford it, I'd suggest that you change them to a VE guarantee.

I also have a VH Guar cabin booked on the Westerdam in October. I am keeping my fingers crossed for an upgrade but if it doesnt go my way Im still happy to be cruising in a balcony cabin that I can afford!
Could be worse...your parents could have no balcony at all and IMO any balcony is better than no balcony!
Heres hoping the upgrade fairy finds me and your parents!

Thanks Gypsy Bear,
I too hope for an upgrade for the both of you. The metal balcony doesn't bother me because they have never been able to have a balcony, BUT I didn't know that there was no tub! They are older and very old fashioned they only use a tub even though they have a shower available:confused: It seems strange but I know that would be a problem!

There are also VB, VC, and VD cabins far aft on decks 4, 5, and 6 with no tub, so the only possible ways to definitely avoid getting a cabin with no tub are to either book a VA (or higher) guarantee, or to book a specific cabin # and specify "do not upgrade".

. . . in October. 3 cabins. Hopefully we'll be upgraded as well. My 2 sisters and their husbands have never been on HAL before. We're hoping to "convert" them on this cruise.
I think I'm going to wait a while before breaking all this to them. Maybe we'll get upgraded and it won't even be an issue.
We did discuss taking a higher category at the time we booked, but all decided to gamble on the "upgrade fairy" paying us a visit. Like others of you have said - I'll be happy with whatever we end up with, just to be cruising.

HI RARESCRAMBLER,
You wouldn't be booked on the Noordam on 10/28 are you. The more people the better the chance to move UP!;)

Most folks that book a VH guarantee, don't get assigned a VH cabin. It's the cheapest booking for a verandah and HAL uses it as a marketing tool to fill their open spots in other V categories. So in exchange for a cheaper price, you give HAL permission to assign any cabin to you, VH or higher. Since there are only a few VH cabins and HAL sells many, many VH guarantees, you are almost certain to be assigned something higher. I wouldn't worry about it. Happy Sailing!
