I understand that the Rotterdam has been in serious trouble at sea for the past couple of days or more. They cut the engines to clean fuel filters and lost all electricity and could not restart the engines. Several people have been injured because of being dead in the water with ~30 foot waves. It is apparently a very difficult time for everyone on board. They had no food for 24 hours. Anyone out there heard any more than this. I know this to be true.

Really? How and who told you? If all this was true I think it would be on the tv news, don't you? :(

How do you KNOW this to be true?
No one else has mentioned a murmer about it.
But I shall inquire from 'those who would know'.
BTW...Welcome to the Board. I notice this is your first post.

It just occured to me that I am having a bit of credibility problem with the bit about no food for twenty four hours.
I KNOW HAL well enough to know that would not happen. There certainly would at least be cold cereals, tuna fish sandwiches, fruit, they'd drag out their grills and there would be food cooking on barbeque pits at Lido Pool....at the very least.

I know this to be true because I received a call from someone on board the ship early this morning. It is true.

You are correct they did have food, bread and water. You don't drag out grills in 30 foot seas.

WHERE is the Rotterdam adrift, OleProf?

They were in the North Sea but they got power back this morning and may have moved some since. They are bypassing a couple of ports and headed for Halifax. Apparently they are getting some of Karl according to what I was told. They haven't been given much information by the Captain.

According to the ship tracking web site (http://www.sailwx.info/shiptrack/shipposition.phtml?call=PDGS) they've been far from "dead in the water". They are, though, east of Karl and may be experiencing high seas because of that.
I also find the statement "no food for 24 hours" to indicate a lack of credibility in your information, as does the fact that there's no confirmation from any news source.
Note that I'm not saying that you are making this up, just that there's no confirmation of your source's info, and no way to judge the source's credibility. If Dan Rather could turn into Chicken Little, then........

No one got "bashed" as far as I can tell, but purpose you'd like to add some light (rather than merely heat) to the discussion?

I can't believe that the Rotterdam is or was introuble. If she were, messages would be sent to all ships in the area, even freighters, and they would head towards her in case their help was needed.

I agree 100% S7S!
Some may have mistaken the thread I started as trying to "stir it up". That was not my intention in the least, I just felt that folks were going to be less prone to review a thread entitled "oleProfz' and was simply putting the question out there to get real answers from those in the "know". I am sorry if anyone misinterpreted my intent.:(

dakrewser...I found the web site you gave to be VERY interesting. I tried to pull it up but can't seem to get it. If you get any later info from that site could you pass it along as it looks (from that) as though the ship has not reported in for over 24-hours???
Thanks!

It's an automated, satellite-based system so weather problems can interfere. As can electrical problems on board or damage to the equipment. Still, it's much better than waiting for another passing ship to radio in location! :)

Nope, that was Ruth's cruise on August 15th, remember the blackout in NY? WE had just gotten off.
That website listed above showed communication from the Rotterdam at 1800 9/25, the present time listed below the graph was 2100, so it was 3 hours, not 24. And she's not in the north sea, but west of Greenland from the latitude indications.
Yup, that's the north atlantic in September.

GN...when I checked the web site a few hours ago it listed the time below as 1800 hours (the 25th) and there had not been anything posted as to ship's position for 24-hours (since 9/24). Now, as you say, the time below is listed as 2100 hours so they finally did check in at 1800 hours ship's time. Thank goodness!! They should be quite far south of the hurricane now but with very heavy seas.
We are still getting high surf and swells off our coast from Hurricane Karl and then will get the same from Jeanne.

OK folks, this thread is a perfect example of why we have our Community Standards and further why some of those who post material in the spirit of sharing or enhancing their information are chased away never to return.
Several people posted comments in this thread that were openly skeptical of the accuracy of the original post because they hadn't heard about the incident from another source. As a result the OP was treated unkindly rather than as someone with a little information about a potential problem who just wanted more information.
PLEASE don't do this again.
Please keep the Cruise Critic Message Boards a fun place to be and a place where folks can go to get information without being concerned about negative reaction.
Thanks for your anticipated cooperation.
See the previous post for a link to more on this developing story.

And were proved right, I might add. Sensationalized views of tragic occurances (or potentially tragic occurences) have no place here. THey cause unnecessary anxiety to people with friends and family members who might be at risk.
Differing opinions can, of course, be tolerated and discounted (if necessary). But things stated as facts must be able to be proven, I would think (of course that's an opinion, but it's my opinion so it must be true ).
