After the initial boarding, are you permitted to get off the ship again (at the departure port), as long as you are back in time for sailaway?

Yes -- just make certain that you are back in time for lifeboat drill.

For example -- if your ship is scheduled to leave at 5 PM -- lifeboat drill will be at 4:15.

We often embark, have lunch and go back into town if we have just arrived that day. But yes take note of when lifeboat drill is.

When sailing from a U.S. port HAL wants you on board 90 minutes before departure. They say you "must" be on board 60 minutes before, and that the gangway will be pulled 30 minutes before departure.

HMMM -- thought that ruling was for new passengers embarking on a ship. Once you have checked in -- you can leave the ship.

In San Diego -- a couple of times we have checked in -- went to see the concierge -- then left the ship to go for lunch. Got back about 4 in time for lifeboat drill.

Yes, you can check-in and get off again, but HAL still wants you on-board 90 minutes before sailing and insists you be back an hour before.
