There is a Norfolk web site for you to check out. I think the name is Cruisenorfolk.org. Or something like that. We used it for our March cruise and found it to be well orginized and run. Cost was about $10/day which included bus to and from the dock. Enjoy your cruise.

There are also some hotels (Radison on Monticello Ave, Holiday Inn Select) that will let you leave your car at the hotel for the cruise, and have shuttle service between the hotel and the ship.

Thank you 2rg and orcrone for the information regarding parking at Norfolk. We are presently booked on USAir from Hartford and it does not look too promising at this point due to their financial status. One of the web sites stated that they may close down operations sometimes in February. We are scheduled for May 2005 Maasdam cruise.

Stary.. I'm booked at the Holiday Inn Select for our upcoming cruise out of Norfolk. I'll post a review on how it went. They have free airport & port shuttle. If you decide to drive, you can leave your car there for the duration. This is the reason why I booked this hotel. The rate I recieved was $123 and with parking. At $100 for 10 days for cruise parking, the math speaks for itself. :)

We're booked for a Feb. cruise so I have been doing some research as well. The Radisson as a "Park and Cruise" package for 2005 that is $162.72 with taxes that includes a complete breakfast, late check-out, and parking. A budget option is the Best Western Holiday Sands Inn & Suites. Its package is $71.10 and includes free shuttle and continental breakfast. Check out www.bestwesternvirginia.com. It is about 10 miles away on the beach whereas the Raddison is downtown.

I have never stayed in either one but will probably opt for the Best Western since it is just for one night.

I feel your pain about USAIR. We just booked a Nov. trip to use up our miles and are hoping they stay in business that long! Good luck!

pcs15. The price must be higher for February as the same package is $134 for October at the Radisson. I was booked there but changed plans after too many bad reviews and comments on the area. One of the people on our sailing called the Norfolk Police and asked if they would leave their car there for 10 days and they told her NO. Sounds like you are making a good choice with the Holiday Sands. There's a group sailing in November on the Masadam where many are staying at this locale.

We considered the hotel route ourselves and also the parking ramp across the street from the pier. Didn't go that route because neither were fence enclosed or under 24/7 observation. Good luck with your plans.

We stayed at the Holiday Sands in April 2004 and will stay again just prior to our Nov 9 cruise. It was fine. The motel is old but nicely kept and the parking lot is outside, within view of the registration area and lighted all night. There is a continental breakfast. The personnel are very friendloy and helpful. There is a neat marina nearby with a great seafood restaurant for dinner the night before departure. Ask the motel desk for directions to "The Blue Crab".The room rate for an oceanview room with all taxes, parking and shuttle to the Maasdam is about $90. Shuttle took less than a half hour to reach the ship. Driving to the motel is mch easier than driving in downtown Norfolk.

How easy was it to get the shuttle back to the Sands at the conclusion of your cruise? Thanks.

Well, to be perfectly honest we jumped the gun and used a taxi! The fee can't have been too horrendous - I think it was less than $20 and we were anxious to get on the road!

The Sands has one shuttle that runs back and forth on embark/disembark day. My guess is that the most you'd have to wait after calling the Sands would be an hour - worst case scenario is that it would have just left the ship, would have to go to the Sands and then return.

I just made our reservation at the Best Western for February. The price was even lower than I expected - $53.10 for a king mini suite - $60 including taxes. And the reservation agent at the hotel was the nicest reservationist I have ever dealt with! We have reservations to take the shuttle at 10:30 over for embarkation.

Has anyone stayed at the Radison? I was looking for someplace downtown. I lived outside of Norfolk a few years ago and I am sure it has changed. Looking for a close in place to stay and park in May 05.

Looking for a close in place to stay and park in May 05.Cworet - That's been a matter of much debate. Some people stay there because of the park and stay, however, many people avoid it because of it's location. Most of the people from our roll call are staying at the Holiday Inn Select on Northampton Blvd, and the previous poster mentioned the Holiday Sands.

Actually, I don't know how long ago you lived outside of Norfolk, but downtown has been cleaned up very nicely, with lots of new development going on. The Radison is on the edge of the redeveloped section, and very near the bus station and a housing project.

Thanks for the info Orcrone. I last lived in the area in 1996. The redevelopment was underway then and when I visited last November I noticed quite an improvement. It will probably be the Radison as my DW is a last minute kind of person and I need to be as close as possible. We'll take the old car.:D

We went down to check the Radisson out a couple weekends ago. Parts of the parking lot are better lit than others; try to leave your car in the better lit areas and it should be OK.
