Cruise lines continue to bypass Freeport, on Grand Bahama Island, which is one of the Bahamas' two major cruise ports. The port city had only just reopened after fairly extensive damage from Hurricane Frances when Hurricane Jeanne struck. We'll offer updates as we receive them.
http://www.cruisecritic.com/images/star2.bmp On the other hand, Nassau, the Bahamas other major port, is in good shape and is welcoming cruise passengers.
http://www.cruisecritic.com/images/star2.bmp Another question mark at this point is cruise lines' private islands. Many had not even reopened following damage caused by Hurricane Frances (one exception was Disney (http://www.cruisecritic.com/reviews/cruiseline.cfm?CruiseLineID=16)). All are now closed, pending damage investigations and then repairs. These include Disney's Castaway Cay, Holland America (http://www.cruisecritic.com/reviews/cruiseline.cfm?CruiseLineID=21)'s Half Moon Cay, Princess (http://www.cruisecritic.com/reviews/cruiseline.cfm?CruiseLineID=28)' Princess Cays, Royal Caribbean (http://www.cruisecritic.com/reviews/cruiseline.cfm?CruiseLineID=32) and Celebrity (http://www.cruisecritic.com/reviews/cruiseline.cfm?CruiseLineID=9)'s CocoCay, and NCL (http://www.cruisecritic.com/reviews/cruiseline.cfm?CruiseLineID=24)'s Great Stirrup Cay.
http://www.cruisecritic.com/images/star2.bmp Grand Cayman, which suffered significant damage from Hurricane Ivan and hasn't seen a cruise ship since, is still in recovery mode. Cruise lines aren't announcing itinerary changes in advance -- though unofficial word is that the island won't reopen to tourists until late 2004 -- and are sending ships to places like Costa Maya and Progreso. This is another we'll-keep-you-posted issue.
http://www.cruisecritic.com/images/star2.bmp It doesn't look like Grenada will be back in tourism mode anytime soon -- that island was devastated by Hurricane Ivan. Recovery efforts are well underway. At this point, some cruise lines, such as NCL, are already announcing permanent winter itinerary changes (Norwegian Dawn (http://www.cruisecritic.com/reviews/review.cfm?ShipID=265), for instance, will replace calls at Grenada with stops at St. Vincent). Most ships are adding Dominica as a replacement, at least at this point.http://www.cruisecritic.com/images/pixel.gif
