I am scheduled on the Oosterdam in one of the rooms with a lifeboat in the window (Med cruise summer 09). I was recently on the Veendam on the promenade deck obstructed view and it was fine--could see the ocean off to the sides (and the price was right...). Can anyone tell me about lifeboat obstructed view cabins on the Oosterdam--can you see anything? Get some light in? thanks

I was on the Oosterdam last year in one of the obstructed cabins. I think it was cat HH. It has a lifeboat in front of the window. They are very nice rooms. The windows are floor to ceilling glass which lets in lots of natural light. You can see very little out of the sides of the windows as far as view is concerned. But for the price it's great! I would definitely recommend getting this cabin.

I had one on the Noordam. The obstruction set-up on the Vista ships is entirely different from the ones on the Veendam (all the S- and R-ships for that matter).
The obstructions on the smaller ships are the steel of the bulkhead, across the deckspace; the lifeboats are stored above. The obstructions on the Vistas are the lifeboats themselves.
They are smack, dab in front of you---across a small catwalk on the other side of your window. The window is floor-to-ceiling, and lets in lots of light. If you're lucky you can get a glimpse of sea and sky. You get a good idea of the weather.
These cabins are a lot nicer than the insides I normally bunk in. :D

How are they different then the inside rooms (other then they have a window)?

They'er bigger. :D
Except for the J- and K-catgory insides on Main Deck, the inside cabins on the Vista ships could be mistaken for a closet.

I had the pleasure of cruising to Alaska in a GG "fully" obstructed cabin on the Oosterdam this past May and I assure you, there was no shortage of light coming in. Even better, when I lay in bed, I could see the water just perfectly! As you can see from the following picture, there is plenty of sunlight streaming in the floor to ceiling window:

Unfortunately I don't have one showing the opposite view but I do have a picture from almost the same cabin on the Westerdam though....the only difference being this one was only partially obstructed:

Hope these pics help and you thoroughly enjoy your Med cruise.

Ok, after looking through the pictures from both of those cruises, I feel like I'm cheating by going on Celebrity later this month.....and a bit sad because it won't be a HAL ship :(. With the cruise being so port intensive, maybe I won't even notice that it's not a "dam" ship.......right? ;)

thanks everyone for the replies--honestly the price is great (just a little more than inside) and cabins I have reserved are midships. Sounds great about the windows.
